JOONDALUP MENTAL HEALTH SUB ACUTE SERVICE
Q. What is the Joondalup Mental Health Sub Acute Service?
A. A new initiative in Western Australia. It provides short-term mental health care, in a
residential setting, that promotes recovery and focuses on learning skills and
developing a plan to improve wellbeing. The service will assist people experiencing a
significant mental health problem but who do not need or no longer require a
hospital admission.
Q. Who can use the service?
A. The service is available to people in WA who have a significant mental illness and who
are assessed as eligible and requiring short term bridging support to return home
from a mental health hospital admission or in order to prevent a mental health
hospital admission.
Q. How long can people stay and what does it cost?
A. People are able to stay for a maximum of 28 days. The service is free and funded by
the Western Australia Mental Health Commission.
Q. Who is running the service?
A. Neami Ltd is responsible for the day to day running of the service and will have it
staffed 24hours per day, 7 days per week by a highly skilled and qualified clinical and
non clinical team (a mixture of psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, Rehabilitation
and Recovery workers etc…).
Q. Who is Neami?
A. Neami is a non-government mental health organisation that provides support
services within a recovery framework to people with a serious mental illness. Neami
staff use the Collaborative Recovery Model (CRM) to assist consumers to build their
confidence and skills to develop a sense of meaning and purpose in their life. The
model emphasises hope by encouraging consumers to identify and enhance their
strengths and values when working towards achieving goals.
Q. What will be happening on the site?
A. Highly skilled and trained mental health staff will be working with people on their
recovery journey to enable then to return home and live independent meaningful
lives in their community of choice.
Q. When will the service be open for people?
A. The service is expected to open in late March 2013 and will gradually build up to full
capacity of 22 people in single units.
