What is SPAVA?
SPAVA
The Society for the Prevention of
Aggressiveness and Violence among
Adolescents (SPAVA) is a nonprofit,
501(c)(3) organization developed to help
teach children and youth a nonviolent
approach to life. SPAVA began during
the 1999-2000 school year. The first
year of full implementation was the
2000-01 school year.
Mission
To help create a nonviolent society
by being role models for the younger
generation
What we do
Scholarships
SPAVA offers a variety of scholarship
award categories at different grade
levels to students participating in the
program. Most awards are for postsecondary education and are in the form of
U.S. government bonds.
How can you help?
Objectives
SPAVA enables students to:
• Learn the value of hard work and the
joy it generates.
• Learn the skills of anger control and
the art of negotiating.
• Discover the advantages of controlled
aggression.
• Develop the spirit of “liking myself
for who I am.”
• Learn respect, honor, integrity,
resilience, and perseverance.
The staff of the
Jefferson County
Public Schools (JCPS)
Volunteer Talent Center
coordinates SPAVA
activities in schools.
Trained community volunteer mentors spend five to ten sessions teaching
the SPAVA curriculum to students in
grades one through twelve.
Volunteer your time as a mentor. Assist
in funding SPAVA.
Who are SPAVA members?
Dr. Timir Banerjee, a Jefferson County
neurosurgeon, began SPAVA to help
with his dream of having conversations
with students about developing a peaceful community.
The SPAVA Board of Directors is a
varied group of Jefferson County business members who share Dr. Banerjee’s
dream.
SPAVA volunteers are community
members who volunteer their time to
mentor students.
Students who have been involved in
SPAVA become active in their schools
and communities, promoting SPAVA
beliefs.
