PRESENTER:
Maureen Keithley
Maureen Keithley came to WIDA in 2008 from the Kentucky Department of Education where she
served as a Title III - LEP/Immigrant Consultant. Maureen received her B.S. from Illinois College,
Jacksonville and her M.S.Ed. at Western Illinois University, Macomb. She is a National Board
Certified Teacher (NBCT), Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood - English as New
Language. Her prior experience as a mainstream teacher, ESL teacher, district Title III coordinator
and at the state education agency equips Maureen to have a multi-dimensional approach when
providing professional development, technical assistance and consulting to WIDA states.
Every couple of years, Maureen travels internationally to one of the home countries of the United
States immigrating populations. She feels this provides her greater empathy for our nation's
immigrants, both of their culture, language included, and motivation for leaving their homelands.
Her travels have taken her with humanitarian and/or educational organizations to Bosnia, ChinaCollege Board, Cuba, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malawi, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine and Zimbabwe.
In the spring of 2012, she traveled to Greece and Turkey.

Additional Visitor’s Information:
Weather: It will be hot outside so please bring light, comfortable clothes, but the air conditioning inside the
buildings can get cool! Bring a light jacket/sweater or scarf for those of you who tend to be more “cold
blooded”!
Ground Transportation from Tan Son Nhat International Airport: Easy access to taxi transportation
is found on the arrival level of the airport at the outside curb taxi service. There are many taxi companies to
choose from. The most reliable are VINASUN and MAI LINH. Depending on time of day and traffic,
expect a 25+ minute trip from the airport to downtown at a cost of approximately 120,000 VND; 40+
minutes to Phu My Hung, approx. 230,000 VND. It is not advisable to accept taxi rides from people
approaching you when exiting luggage pick-up and customs.
Exchange Rate: USD 1 = VND 21,000 (approximate rate as of August 2012)
Visa:
1. Please organize your visa through your travel agent or the Vietnamese Embassy in your country well in
advance. Most tourist visas are valid for single entry only. Participants wishing to re-enter Vietnam
must apply for a multiple entry visa.
2. Visa Application for Visa-upon arrival: Please visit the following websites: http://www.vietnamvisa.com/ or http://www.myvietnamvisa.com/
Transport from Hotel to School
The hotels around Phu My Hung are an easy walking distance to SSIS (Phu My Hung) or a short taxi ride
(less than 5 minutes and approximately 16,000+ VND). A taxi from downtown will take approximately 2025 minutes to SSIS depending on where you’re staying (around 110,000 +VND). Most taxis in Ho Chi
Minh City use the meter.
Again, two of the most reputable taxi companies are VINASUN and MAI LINH. Use these instead of the
other companies. Many taxi drivers have limited English.
