Lockout/Tagout
What is Lockout/Tagout?
L
ockout/Tagout is a procedure that physically isolates machines/equipment from one or more energy sources.
It is widely used in manufacturing plants to prevent the accidental release of energy during maintenance,
servicing and repair operations. Note: Simply hitting a STOP button and engaging a tab-over is NOT Lockout/
Tagout. In fact, OSHA does not even consider or allow panel-type controls to serve as disconnecting means.
These types of controls do nothing to physically disconnect the circuit operations.

Recommended Color Coding
While the OSHA standard does not specifically
mandate colors to be used on accident prevention tags,
OSHA does recommend the following color scheme
for meeting requirements of Lockout/Tagout:
“DANGER” - Red, or predominantly
red, with lettering or symbols
in a contrasting color
“CAUTION” - Yellow, or
predominantly yellow, with lettering
or symbols in a contrasting color
“WARNING” - Orange, or
predominantly orange, with lettering
or symbols in a contrasting color
“BIOLOGICAL HAZARD” Fluorescent orange or orange-red,
or predominantly so, with lettering
or symbols in a contrasting color

Lock out electrical power at the source, right at the circuit breaker.
No need to lock out the entire panel. Compact, universally designed
lockouts fit over most major brands of breaker toggles in the off
position. Attach without modification to the breaker toggle and
panel to prevent the breaker from being switched on once a padlock
is in place. Rigid all-plastic construction in visible red color.
Single-pole style fits over breaker toggle up to 9/16" width
with recessed hole.
Single-pole, no-hole style fits on breaker toggle up to 9/16" width
without a recessed hole by securing with a screw (included).
Double-pole style fits over (2) breaker toggles up
to 5/8" width connected by a cross bar.
Double/triple pole style fits over 2-3 breaker toggles connected by a bar.

Boxes
Group Lock Box
Used for work team situations where multiple employees, energy
sources, machines and processes need to be locked out. All keys are
securely stored in the tamper-resistant heavy steel lock box. A single
person (group leader or foreman) locks the box until the job is complete
and all group members are cleared from work area. The 13-lock group
lock box helps to simplify lockout procedures for large equipment. Once
the equipment or process is locked out, the key or keys are placed in
the heavy steel 13-lock box. Then, each authorized work team member
places a personal lock or tagout device to the group lock box. This
ensures that no single person has access to the box unless all employees
have removed their locks or tags. Accepts up to (13) individual locks.

Lockout / Tagout
Lockout / Tagout Program
Just shutting off, unplugging, or disconnecting
equipment is not enough… Comply
with OSHA Regulations, Lock it Out!
Before repairs, servicing, maintenance, or set-up of machines and equipment can begin,
prevent the unexpected — the accidental start up!
Procedures, devices, and personnel must be set in place to prevent a serious injury or death that
could occur when someone thinks something is safely off. To ensure machines and equipment
remain off means to establish a “program consisting of energy control procedures, employee
training, and periodic inspections...”, as described in the OSHA standard. The standard also
identifies products used for lockout/tagout, such as lockout devices and tagout devices.
Highlighted here are seven steps to creating an
effective lockout/tagout program.
1
2
Set-up Lockout Training
& Procedure Program —
Be Aware of the Lockout
Regulations —
5
Become familiar with the federal
regulations known as The Control of
Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout).
Develop List of Machinery
& Equipment —
Survey your facility for all machinery
and equipment that have the potential
for requiring lockout.
Identify & Mark Energy Sources
& Lockout Points —
3
Locate and document start up areas
of energy sources, such as:
6
• Mechanical • Electrical • Hydraulic
• Thermal
• Pressure • Process Control
• Stored Energy — gravity — springs
Develop, standardize, and document
the lockout process — for each
energy source. Identify employees’
level of involvement in the
program - those that are made
aware, affected, and to perform
the lockout procedures.
Accomplish this through
comprehensive training programs and certifications.
Implement the
Lockout Program —
Initiate and enact the lockout/tagout
program that follows the training
procedures. Post reminders and have
the necessary lockout/tagout devices
readily available.
Review Lockout
Program —
Post signs, apply labels
and tags…
…to warn and identify energy source
areas and points requiring shut down and
lockout/tagout procedures.
7
4
Determine the Lockout Controls —
Identify and document the necessary devices that isolate and lockout energy
sources, and secure them for on-site use. Standardize the devices for various
functions for proper identification.
Identify and document
changes to existing lockout
procedures and new
energy sources that require
lockout. Make corrections,
changes, and additions to
the program. Conduct periodic review of lockout procedures
(required at least annually) to ensure they are up to date and
requirements are being met.
29 CFR § 1910.147… The Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/
Tagout) ...requires the employers to establish a program and utilize
procedures for affixing appropriate lockout devices or tagout devices to energy isolating devices, and to otherwise disable machines or
equipment to prevent unexpected energization, start-up or release
of stored energy in order to prevent injury to employees.
We offer solutions to help meet your lockout/tagout requirements and make your employees aware of the energy source hazards found throughout your facility. Look
for products to meet your specific lockout needs ranging from lockout devices to training materials. Call us for a consultation of your lockout/tagout requirements.
