Why you have to attend your appointments
and activities
You must attend your appointments and activities with Centrelink or your employment services
provider. If you can’t attend, you need to contact the organisation who arranged this for you
beforehand. If you don’t, your Centrelink payments may stop and you may also incur a failure.
These arrangements apply to you if you are a jobseeker getting Newstart Allowance, Youth
Allowance, Parenting Payment or Special Benefit (unless you are temporarily exempt from Activity
Test or participation requirements).
If you don’t tell us or your provider you can’t make your appointment you may lose some or all of your
payment, even if you have a reasonable excuse for not being able to attend (such as working or being
sick on the day).
What could happen if I don’t attend an appointment or activity?
Your Centrelink payment may immediately stop until you speak to us and agree to attend
another appointment. You will get full back pay when you agree to attend this appointment.
If you miss your next appointment your payment will again be stopped. This time, if you
don’t have a good reason for not attending, or not contacting us to let us know why you
can’t attend, you may lose some or all of your payment until you attend a further
appointment. You won’t get back pay for these days.
Money for these days will be deducted from your next Centrelink payment.
How can I make sure my payments are not stopped or reduced?
You can avoid your payments being stopped or reduced by:
going to all compulsory activities and appointments with us and your provider, unless you
have a good reason for not being able to attend
let the organisation that made the appointment know if you can’t attend your appointment or
activity for any reason before it’s due to start. We will tell you who you should contact when
we tell you about the appointment or activity.
if you have a good reason for not being able to attend, you may be able to reschedule your
appointment or activity
you must let us know if you change your address, and
you should let us know if you are having personal difficulties as soon as possible so we can
take them into account.
How do I find out more?
To find out more speak with your employment services provider or Centrelink.
You can also visit humanservices.gov.au or call 131 202 to speak to us in languages other than
English.
