Lives Transformed: That’s Why We Build
One of our favorite scripture passages
is 1 Peter 4:10: “As each has received
a gift, use it to serve one another, as
good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
This verse reflects our dedication to
the mission of Habitat and the many
dedicated donors, volunteers and
families who trust and support our
continued efforts to build homes,
communities and hope. This mission
is a powerful one and we promote it
with the utmost respect and dignity.
on its mission. The effects of the
recession hit Habitat in 2011 and
2012. Major grant funding like
Partners in Sustainable Building,
Softwood Lumber, and HOP funding
are diminishing or non-existent today.
These funding streams and others
provided about $20,000 to $25,000
per home. This funding helped
supplement the support of house
sponsors and individual donors and is
no longer there.
The power of this life-changing
ministry is what continues to motivate
our efforts. Poverty housing is still an
issue in our local community. Habitat
is a driving force which ensures
everyone has the opportunity to have
a decent place to live.
In 2012 and 2013, you worked hard
to help Habitat recover from this
loss in funding. Individuals and
local corporations stepped up in
a big way and kept house building
going. Habitat’s Finance Committee
increased its support to the staff
management team to implement a
rigorous Proceed to Build Policy and
a new financial model to effectively
adapt to changing times. Donors
and volunteers have accepted the
challenge to engage more people in
Habitat! Thank you! We are making
our way back to a better pace of
building – a building pace we’re used
to. We are shooting for 22+ houses a
year by Fiscal Year 2016. You can help
us get there!
Times are tougher than ever and the
need for Habitat is greater than ever.
This past year, those closest to Habitat
have lived 1 Peter 4:10 in spades!
During challenging times, the Habitat
family pulled together, used our
various gifts to serve the mission, and
worked to keep our house in order.
The mercy and strength of Christ lives
through the people that embody the
mission and vision of Habitat.
Despite numerous challenges,
Habitat maintains a relentless focus
So, as we look ahead, what is our
strategy? Our goal is to engage more
people in the mission, increase
fundraising efforts, and maintain a
disciplined approach to long-term
sustainability. It’s that simple and
we must do it so that we can ensure
everyone has a decent place to live!
Passion for and focus on our mission
built a great Habitat movement in
Evansville. This same passion and
focus will continue to sustain a
great Habitat. Thank you for your
commitment and loyalty to helping
God’s people in need find a decent
place to live.
Together, we will continue to make a
difference through prayers,
gifts and volunteer
efforts. This ministry is a team effort
and we look forward to transforming
even more lives in the coming years.
With humble appreciation for all you
do,
Lori Reed, Executive Director

Glennwood Community Development Initiative
In 2008, Habitat for Humanity of Evansville began to share an idea to bring
many institutions together with neighborhood residents to develop a commonly
shared vision and plan for neighborhood improvement. The idea was to improve
the neighborhood where Habitat families would live because the stability of
neighborhoods directly impacts our families.
This year, a five-year evaluation was released regarding the progress of work in
the Glenwood neighborhood. The evaluation showed major improvement in three
areas – Education, Health and Wellness and Housing.
This is what residents, as a whole, said regarding the progress of their
neighborhood:
•Adults in the neighborhood use the school for their own educational
needs.
•The streets and sidewalks are kept in good condition.
•Neighbors have pride in our neighborhood.
•Streets, sidewalks, and other public spaces are free of trash and litter.
•In general, homes in my neighborhood are kept in good condition.
•My home is in good condition.
•Housing in my neighborhood is affordable.
•The housing in my neighborhood is decent (i.e., fit for living).
•There are healthy foods available in or near my neighborhood.
•There are places in my neighborhood where I can exercise.
Habitat for Humanity of Evansville FY2013 Annual Report
$1 Million Milestone
Habitat for Humanity of Evansville has
always been built on the concept of
partnership. However, after 29 years
serving hard-working families in the
community, some still view Habitat
homes as “giveaways.” This year, Habitat
staff and supporters were excited to
dispel this myth through a milestone
celebration.
In 2013, Habitat was pleased to celebrate
$1 million in property taxes paid to
the city thanks to dedicated Habitat
homeowners.
This milestone is no small feat for any
Habitat affiliate, and is a testament to
the success of preparing homeowners
for the reality that comes with paying
a down payment, monthly mortgage,
property taxes, and investing in home
maintenance.
Since 1984, over 400 families have
benefited from the simple, decent and
affordable housing Habitat provides in
the local community.
“Habitat homeowners are homebuyers
just like every other homebuyer on
the planet,” said Lori Reed, Executive
Director of Habitat for Humanity of
Evansville. “They are extra special
because they have worked hard to get
here through our homeownership
program.”
The event was marked by a
celebration on June 5 at 1748
S. Morton Avenue which is
where Habitat has recently
focused efforts in a blockby-block approach to
housing.

The Impact of Homeownership
Nearly 20 years ago, Cynthia Bennett became a homeowner through Habitat for
Humanity of Evansville thanks to the support of Lutherans for Habitat. She had two
young children, Christopher and Christina, who are now both grown and thriving.
Christopher Bennett graduated from DePauw University in 2004 with a bachelor’s
degree in philosophy. He also holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Tiffin
University. He presently works for CSX and lives in Avon, Indiana, with his wife and
their two children.
Christina Bennett, M.D.
While in medical school, Christina
was one of 42 students (the only
one selected from Indiana) to do
research at the National Institute
of Health in Washington, D. C.
Her daughter Christina graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in
Indianapolis and is completing her residency in internal medicine at Christ Hospital
in Cincinnati.
Both children say that the Habitat house – which their mother paid off in full in
2008 – came along at the right time in their lives because it gave them a room of
their own and a safe place to live and complete their homework.
The Impact is Real
Children in an
owned home have
a higher rate of high
school graduation.
Owning a home
improves test
scores and reduces
behavioral problems
in children.
Children of
homeowners are
less likely to have
substance abuse
problems.

Supporting Global Housing Needs in Jordan
During this fiscal year, Habitat
for Humanity of Evansville was
able to give $30,547 in tithe
contributions to families in both
Jordan and Haiti.
Every time a house is built locally, a tithe contribution is sent to Haiti or Jordan as
part of Habitat for Humanity of Evansville’s global housing effort. Hagar and her
family are just one example of the lives that have been changed due to Habitat
supporters locally.
Since 1985, we’ve been able to
tithe $957,893 to support the
global housing need.
Hagar’s income is 200JD which is equivalent to $282 US dollars a month. A new
home will give Hagar’s family a sense of freedom, space and more independence.
The house will be in the village overlooking the salt flats of the Dead Sea.
Hagar is a 32-year-old widow who takes care of her four children: Ayham (9), Faisal
(6), Tamara (4), and Khazneh (2). They all live in the village of Ghor al Safi south of
the Dead Sea in the Karak Governorate of Jordan.
The home that has been built for the family is a typical cinder block house with
a poured concrete floor measuring 55 square meters. There are two rooms, a
bedroom, and other space for a kitchen, toilet, and shower. The monthly payment
on this home will be equivalent to $113 U.S. dollars a month. The opportunity to
become a homeowner in Jordan is something that Hagar has only been able to
dream about until now.
Hagar poses for a family picture with her mother in Jordan.

A Lasting Gift
The Perigo-Prickett Society was founded in 2000 to recognize donors who have
remembered Habitat for Humanity of Evansville in their estate plans or made
a contribution to the Habitat for Humanity of Evansville Endowment Fund
with the Vanderburgh Community Foundation. The Society was named after
Jim Perigo and Jim Prickett. Perigo helped establish Habitat for Humanity of
Evansville, and Prickett played a significant role in the founding of Habitat for
Humanity International in Americus, Georgia in 1976. Charitable gifts are the
key to sustainability for Habitat for Humanity of Evansville and estate planning
is one of the many ways to improve lives of local families in our community.
