At Khalifa University, our students also play a significant role in the success of our faculty and the institution as whole. I couldn’t have done it without the help and support given to me by Khalifa University, especially their internal research fund. I couldn’t have done this within the relatively short time I had, without the help of my Masters Student, who put great efforts in acquiring the parts needed to develop our Field Ion Microscope, and in assembling and testing it. Not to mention all the support from my colleagues and students, which I am very grateful for. Dr. Mohammed Rezeq Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics and Sciences and holder of two patents for the world’s smallest transistor and the fabrication of super ion-electron sources and nano-probes. KU 13 14 Khalifa University gave me an opportunity to give back to my community and my country a little of what they have given me; in Biomedical Engineering we work in research teams in which the students are engaged at various levels and we continuously develop our curriculum to reflect and enhance what we do in the laboratory. Dr. Habiba Alsafar Assistant Professor – Biomedical Engineering halifa University has been shaping my K future for the last nine years. Starting from my bachelor’s degree that I started when I was a young student who was looking for a degree to prove to myself and my family that I was capable of earning an engineering degree. However, as I progressed, it turned into something different and the passion to have a degree in Computer Engineering became one of my main goals. In addition, the enormous and continuous support that I have received from Khalifa University has given me the confidence to do my postgraduate studies, through the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Program for Graduate Scholarships (Buhooth). It has also helped me to discover how passionate I am about teaching and delivering the knowledge to Emirati youth. Mohammed Al Zaabi PhD Student – Computer Engineering Also completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering and a Masters Degree in Information Security at Khalifa University (Buhooth Scholarship Holder) KU 15 16 Our Opportunities Khalifa University students are in high demand by both local and international companies for internships and work experience programs. Internships Top employers like ENEC, Etisalat, ADNOC, Dubal, Mubadala, TRA, UAE military, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Dassault, Google, Diehl and many, many more routinely offer our students opportunities for advancement, educational opportunities, and sponsorship. Students have the chance to travel to countries such as the USA, UK, Germany, France, Singapore and Korea. Khalifa University believes that internships are a vital part of a well-rounded education and will always try and place its students with top companies. Diehl Defence and Diehl Aerosystems has been cooperating with Khalifa University since 2009. In the past few years, Diehl provided a 6-week Internship program for a number of Khalifa University students at Diehl in Germany and we plan to continue this program and increase the number of students we take. Helmut Reichelt Diehl Defense Head of Diehl Defense Representative Office Abu Dhabi It was wonderful being given the opportunity to work in my primary field, which is composite manufacturing. My work for Dassault allowed me to create and test composites with an ultra-sonic device, it was an exciting job. Hamad Al Menhali Khalifa University Student and Intern at Dassault Aviation in France. KU 17 18 Competitions and Conferences Khalifa University students routinely place highly in local and international science and technology competitions. And our faculty are often invited guests at conferences around the world. Much of this has to do with Khalifa University’s involvement in international associations like IEEE, ASME and AIAA. However, the University is also the driving force behind many local competitions like the annual Mobile Application Contest and the Engineering Students Ethics Competition. Khalifa University students are supported to attend conferences and enter competitions because we believe that competition and collaboration are an important part of driving innovation and creativity at the University. KU 19 20 The seven students from Khalifa University showed high levels of innovation in their spacecraft design and we are very proud of their achievement at CanSat. I believe Khalifa University is different from other institutes because it has had such great achievements in such a short period. The competition is extremely challenging and requires a high degree of analytical thinking coupled with strong engineering skills which these students have in abundance. Khalifa University has partnerships with internationally renowned universities, participates in many worldwide scientific competitions and sends students abroad to gain experience. All of these features make Khalifa University unique and makes me proud to have joined it. The skills displayed by each individual throughout the event closely mirror those that power and guide the Yahsat team on a day-to-day basis; team work combined with great collaborative minds to solve difficult challenges. Everyone at Yahsat is proud of their achievement at the competition and I hope the students feel a sense of pride and reward in their design. Masood M. Sharif Mahmood CEO of Yahsat on Khalifa University students being ranked 22nd worldwide at Cansat competition in Burkett, Texas. Fatima Al Hammadi Khalifa University Student Electrical and Electronic Engineering KU 21 22 Field Trips My trip to visit Boeing was a wonderful experience. Students also get the opportunity to go on field trips to many other countries around the world, such as the USA, UK, Korea, Japan. I had the opportunity to see how innovative aerospace engineers can be, and learn about how they think, and how to solve problems in a real world scenario. These field trips offer our students un-paralleled opportunities to receive real world experience and increase their knowledge of their chosen field of study through interaction with industry and academic professionals and their peers from around the world. It was interesting to see how a change to any part of an airplane will result in a change in its aerodynamics and performance. Most importantly, I learned that teamwork is vital for innovation and success as an engineer. Khalifa Ibrahim Al Tamimi Khalifa University Student Aerospace Engineering During our time in Japan we visited many interesting cultural, educational and entertaining places. It was a wonderful experience which all of the students, as well as the instructors, enjoyed. However, we did not forget our duties as citizens of the United Arab Emirates and students of Khalifa University, this gave us an important sense of responsibility which encouraged us to be disciplined and respectful at all times. Hamad Eisa Ali Alhazami Khalifa University Student and President of Khalifa University’s Japan Club (Sharjah campus) KU 23 24 Student Clubs Khalifa University boasts many student clubs that appeal to the wide variety of personal and professional interests our students have. Whether you’re interested in photography, chess, theater, football, learning a new language or about a new culture, or simply interested in networking with other engineers from around the world through one of our professional societies, Khalifa University will have a club that appeals to you. The clubs I participated in, such as the theater and talent clubs and the student council, helped me get over the pressure coming from the academic rigors that I faced. I think that the four years I spend at university should not be all about my GPA and studying. The University is meant for students to find themselves, and one of the ways to do this is the activities they participate in. Also, the clubs helped me become a better engineer by making me try different things and helping me solve many difficult problems, such as handling or organizing an event for example. I remember one of my professors told me that every engineer has a hobby or a talent that is not related to engineering and I believe that because I find myself writing short stories and drawing. Aziza Al Marzooqi Khalifa University Student Electrical and Electronic Engineering Program KU 25 26 Our Support Counseling Services Khalifa University provides support services that are aimed at maximizing the success of our students in their personal and academic lives. Our counselors are on hand to address any issues students might be having, be it a personal problem or an academic one, through individual or group sessions, discussion groups, workshops and referrals to private care. Khalifa University’s counselling services are a safe and objective place for you to freely discuss your concerns and all information shared during these sessions is strictly confidential. Khalifa University’s counselors are always helpful, and they cheer you up right away. With their help, you always feel confident and prepared to tackle new challenges. Our campus provides students with state of the art facilities, labs, and classrooms, as well as, a variety of dining options such as Subway and Costa Coffee. 28 Khalifa University provides a safe and secure environment for students to live in. Having seen many other dorms nationally and abroad, I can say that these are the best that I have seen in terms of luxury, security and service. Its location, being in a residential area, allows for a quiet and home-like atmosphere. Kaltham Yousef Khalfan Al-Ali Khalifa University Student Mechanical Engineering Student KU 29 30 Our Alumni Your Khalifa University experience doesn’t end with graduation. We have an active Alumni Association that ensures you keep in contact with all of your friends and peers, and that the relationships you develop while at University lasts a lifetime. Our alumni are industry leaders in the UAE, and when you join their ranks, you will find yourself with an opportunity to give back to the institution that has, hopefully, provided you with some of the best years of your life. When you’re studying at university all you can think about is that you want to finish it and move on, but when you have finished, all you want to do is come back. Even now, when I drive by Khalifa University, I stop and remember what I was doing and I wonder what the students are doing now. That’s why the Alumni Association is so important, it’s the best way to gather us all together again, and to introduce you to new alumni you haven’t met. It lets current students know that they will see their family again, that they are part of a special network of industry leaders and successful professionals. Omar Al Muzzaki Alumni Association Chair and Khalifa University Alumni, Class of 1994 Khalifa University’s reputation is very strong amongst employers mainly because of the type of education we received at the university, which is different from other universities. From day one, Khalifa University was keen on developing and tuning many skills that benefit employers, such as report writing, working under pressure and project management. All these skills made it easier for us when we joined the workforce. I wanted to come back to Khalifa University for my graduate studies since the level of education I received here was really high, and I did not want to downgrade and settle for something else. I completed my Bachelors and my Masters at Khalifa University and hopefully in the future I will start working on a PhD. Who knows, maybe I will come back to the University finally as a professor instead of a student. Ebrahim Al Alkeem Alumni Association Assistant Executive Secretary Class of 2006 KU 31 32 Our Future Our Campus Khalifa University is constantly growing and evolving in order to keep up with the fast paced world of science and technology. Khalifa University’s campuses offer its students state of the art classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums and access to high quality fitness and leisure facilities.
