Gabriel Consulting Group - A Positive Opinion
“The combination of Oracle VM and IBM’s scalable x86-based servers
might be a virtualization game changer. Both of these vendors are longtime trusted data center players – which is a significant advantage over
their competitors.”
“For the enterprise data center, IBM and Oracle cooperating on virtualization is
a very compelling value proposition. IBM brings sophisticated high-end
hardware, Oracle brings virtualization and mission critical software, and they
work together on integration and other services. For a data center manager
who’s interested in risk reduction and smooth implementation, what’s not to
like?”

External Disk Requirements and Guidelines for Oracle VM
External General Storage Requirements
Store image files on external storage to enable Live Migration. Disk technology can be SAN, NAS, iSCSI
DS3200 – SAS Storage Subsystem
Switch does not allow LUNs to be shared between servers. Therefore Live Migration is not possible.
DS3300 – iSCSI Storage Subsystem
RDAC multi-path I/O driver not supported with Oracle VM. Therefore, only single patch configuration.
DS3400 – Fiber Channel Storage Subsystem
LUNs can be shared between servers so Live Migration is possible. RDAC multi-path I/O driver not supported
with Oracle VM. Therefore, only single patch configuration.
DS4000 – All are Fiber Channel Storage Subsystems
Recommended either SAS or FC drives for best performance. SATA drives ok is I/O performance not critical.
DS6000 & DS8000 – Enterprise Storage Offerings
Device Mapper multi-pathing method from the Linux kernel is supported with SuSE and RHEL. It is not
supported with Oracle VM. Therefore, a single patch configuration is required.
N Series family – NAS offering
Connect made over the network between servers so Live Migration is possible.
Network interface bonding may be used with Shared N Series storage to provide multi-path patch support with
Oracle VM.

Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) - Simplified
Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 - Oracle distribution of Red Hat RHEL4
Does not run on System p, i, z – Supports System x x86/x64 processors only
Unbreakable Linux - Oracle support program for OEL
Oracle provides OEL patches, updates, full support
ƒ Does IBM support OEL?
Yes, System x provides server & storage
device support for OEL customers
Oracle provides the support for OEL
IBM & Oracle can easily transfer supports calls
to each other’s support team
ƒ IBM continues to support Red Hat and
Novell SLES, and provides an additional
level of certification and support due to
their large shares of the Linux market
ƒ IBM System x continues to work closely
with Oracle and evaluate additional
support options as the market evolves
