Why 700 DC? The natural supply voltage for three phase inverters is 700 Vdc. SCHAFFLER have standardised on this principle for all rail applications. – “Whatever the supply voltage, convert it to 700 Vdc. 700 Vdc provides sufficient headroom so that a common mode and differential mode filter can be included to produce a sinusoidal 3-phase output wave. Supply Specifications 74V DC Common battery voltage in locomotives. 110V DC Common battery voltage in passenger cars. 200V-480V AC Variable voltage derived from a variable frequency alternator, typically connected to a traction alternator. Frequency ranges from 20Hz to 80Hz. 380/415/440V AC Supply or from auxiliary alternator. 50Hz or 60Hz. 600V DC Used in overhead tram systems. 750V DC Used in light rail transportation. 25kV and 15 kV @ 50, 60 and 162/3 Hz AC Stepped down to 400V AC, main line tracks in many parts of the world.
