Small Town Hospitality in
Northern Indiana
Amish Country
H eritage
Middlebury is a town of beauty and hospitality nestled in
Northern Indiana Amish Country just minutes south of I 80/90
exit 107, two hours east of Chicago. Shops throughout town
reflect our heritage by offering locally made quilts, crafts and
furniture. Life happens at a slower pace; here visitors will enjoy
a stroll up and down Main Street listening to the clip clop of
buggies passing by. Savor the locally made specialties, fresh
pies, cheeses, noodles, honey and smoked meats that can be
purchased throughout the area.
During your visit, spend time on the back
roads to uncover the simpler lifestyle of
the area’s 1,100-plus Amish families.
One-room schoolhouses and Amish farms
dot the countryside. Amish shops can be
found on the outskirts of town, some of
which you can now find on the new
Countryside Shoppes map, page 10. They
offer handmade furniture, outdoor accessories, natural food products and produce
straight from the gardens. The Heritage
Trail has free CDs available at the Amish
Country Visitors Center. If you prefer, a
free MP3 download contains that same
information at www.amishcountry.org
for your upcoming visit.
Just up the hill from downtown you can pull up a chair to the
state’s largest restaurant. Serving home-style Amish-Mennonite
fare in a family style setting, you won’t go away hungry. Plan an
overnight visit at one of Middlebury’s delightful Bed &
Breakfasts or in a charming full service Inn. The area has so
much to offer you may just decide to stay around a little longer.
Close-by destinations include; Nappanee, Shipshewana,
Goshen, Elkhart and Notre Dame/South Bend.
Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or just need a little fresh
air don’t miss a stop at Middlebury’s fine parks offering many
opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Krider’s World Fair
Garden Park, a state historic site, displays an explosion of flowers and features giant toadstools, a windmill and great picnic
spots. Stroll the adjoining Pumpkinvine Trail to the scenic trestle bridge, part of a rail to trail project that will be completed to
Shipshewana in 2011. East of downtown, the River Bend Park
offers playground equipment, fishing opportunities, a covered
picnic area and an excellent trail system.
Head north out of town just a few short minutes to visit the
223-acre Bonneyville Mill County Park, home to Indiana’s oldest operating grist mill. Millers are on hand daily to show guests
the flour grinding process. Take some home for your baking.

3rd Fridays
Come join the merchants and community of Middlebury for the 3rd Friday events of each month. Music,
family activities, food, and sales events are just some of the pieces brought together to make our 3rd
Fridays a special time.
Our beautiful town comes alive these evenings from 5 - 8 pm with neighbors catching up on the week's
news and visitors taking in the charm of a truly American small town. Leave the frenzy of your normal
work days behind. Come, visit as long and often as you can. You'll always be welcome here.
