Project Proposal Request
Project Name: Water for Wildlife (WFW)-Spring and guzzler restoration
Geographic Location: East Mojave Deer zone: D 17 & D12
Submitted by: Cliff McDonald
Organization: Water for Wildlife/ Society for the Protection and Care of Wildlife
Contact or Lead Person: Cliff McDonald

Type of Project: Restoration of wildlife water sources, several springs, plus 75 to 100
small game drinkers located throughout the East Mojave, including the Mojave National
Preserve. Provide reliable water sources for the local wildlife, deer, bighorn, quail,
chukar, dove, and non game animals.
Project Start Date/ Completion Date: This has been an ongoing project (eight years).
Each year WFW organizes 4-5 three day projects in the East Mojave. All WFW
volunteers are registered with the CA F&W and authorized to perform the work required
to restore each water source. WFW works with the Mojave National Preserve and the
Bureau of Land Management, as all the water sources are located on those public lands.
All the necessary paperwork is on file with the BLM and the MNP.
Thus far we have restored over 100 small game drinkers, plus installed piping and water
tanks at several springs, removed invasive tamarisk plants, oiled windmills etc, . The
overall project should take another four or five years to complete, as we have at least
another 100 water sources to work on in the East Mojave. Some maintenance over the
years will be needed to ensure these drinkers continue to provide a reliable water source
for our desert wildlife.
Affected Area Size: 2-3 million acres with includes the Mojave National Preserve.
CDA Funds: $5000.00 Matching Funds: Other funds will be allocated from
organizations such as, Safari Club Orange County, Orange County Predator Callers, and
Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep along with private donations.
PROJECT ID: #006-13
Total Costs: The estimate for 2014 would be $8,000.00. Breakdown would be 12 small
game drinkers at $550.00 each= $6650.00, restoration of springs, water tanks, windmills,
estimated costs would be $250.00 to $350.00 each, depending on how many feet of
piping is needed, how many water tanks are required, plus if parts are need for
windmills= $1500.00 to $3000.00.
Purpose of Project: To ensure a stable water source for the wildlife in the East Mojave.
Description of Project: Restore the concrete surface and holding tanks on small game
drinkers, restore water to springs by removing overgrown vegetation (tamarisk), install
piping and holding tanks where needed. Work with the Mojave National Preserve to
maintain existing water tanks and windmills.
Annual Cost of Upkeep: Upkeep should be minimal. After all drinkers have been
restored (5 years), it should take one or two minor projects per year to check the drinkers
and do minor repairs. Annual costs are hard to pin point but I would say between $1500$2000 minimal material, concrete, coating, piping, tanks, etc could need to be purchased.
Project Proposal Request (con’t)
Description of Project Area (maps attached): East Mojave, including The Mojave
National Preserve
Summer Range: Same Winter Range: Same
How will this project enhance the deer resources?: This project will help maintain
year around water sources for the deer and other wildlife.
Identify the specific use of CDA funds for this project: The money will be used to
purchase concrete, mortar, water tanks, pipe, surfacing material, power tools, hand tools,
safety equipment.
Additional Comments: I would like to say the Mojave National Preserve and the East
Mojave are one of the best deer hunting areas in Southern Ca. This area, East Mojave is
very important to the entire Southern CA hunters, whether they hunt for small game or
deer. Additionally the general public will enjoy the wildlife that uses these drinkers and
springs.
