SPECIAL OLYMPICS RANDOLPH COUNTY
Welcome from Special Olympics Randolph County (SORC)! This brief narrative provides general
information on Special Olympics, competitions, and contacts for participants, teachers, and those that wish to
volunteer or make donations. SORC is continually reaching out to a greater number of athletes by promoting and
expanding sports and competition, training opportunities, involvement of families and volunteers, and fund raising
activities. We conduct frequent fund raisers, which have included our annual golf tournament, yard sales, pageants,
gospel singing, participation in local charity events, and other solicitations. We also request donations from
foundations and local businesses each year.
SORC has served local athletes for more than 20 years. Our volunteers and coaches serve athletes in
Randolph County and Asheboro City Schools, Randolph Community College, and area group homes. We offer
year-round sports training for athletes with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. Athletes participate
in local competition in bowling, aquatics and track and field. The local games in 2011-2012 will be held (with
tentative dates) as follows:
Bowling
(Family Sports Center)
November 3, 2011
November 10, 2011
Middle and High Schools/Group Homes/RCC
Elementary Schools
Aquatics
(YMCA)
February 14, 2012
February 15, 2012
Middle and High Schools/Group Homes/RCC
Elementary Schools
Track & Field
April 25, 2012
(Southwestern Randolph High School)
(rain date: April 26, 2012)
Current Special Olympics medical and release forms must be on file with SORC for the athlete to participate
in local games. If you are not sure these forms have been provided, then please contact Larry Pearce at 498-1060
or 629-4340. No substitutions or additions will be allowed on the day of the event. Lunch is not provided by
SORC at the local games.
SORC coaches and volunteers support teams that participate in annual statewide competitions in these and
other sports during the spring, summer, and fall. Currently, we have teams that participate in bocce and soccer
("Fall Games"), basketball ("Spring Games") and aquatics and volleyball ("Summer Games"). The “Fall Games”
will be held in High Point in November 2011, the "Spring Games" will be held in Charlotte in March 2012 and the
“Summer Games” will be held in Raleigh in June 2012. Practice for each team participating in the “Fall Games”
generally begins after Labor Day. Our athletes must travel to “qualifiers” prior to the statewide games. For
example, we have our aquatics qualifier in Hillsborough, and athletes must participate in these qualifiers.
We have recurring expenses for items such as van/bus rental and other travel expenses, uniforms, ribbons,
equipment and fees to Special Olympics that we must provide through donations and fundraisers. Donations to
Special Olympics Randolph County would be sincerely appreciated. We could also always use fresh ideas in our
fund raising activities as well as athletic competitions and training. If you or someone you know is interested in
attending our monthly meetings (1st Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Senior Adult Center in Asheboro)
becoming a certified coach, assisting as a volunteer in sports or fund raising activities, then please contact Linda
Needham at 672-2097.
