Project Goals and Activities
Project Goals and Description
I am looking forward to build a smart robot which will be able to sense carbon monoxide (CO)
gas and give feedback of its presence in order to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Through
this project we will be able to track harmful gas concentration around campus which can then
be corrected and maintained to obtain a clean environment providing advance campus
sustainability. During this project we will be collecting data with the robot and CO sensor. For
this project I will be working alone along with the guidance of my advisor. I will be collecting
data with the robot every week in different location around campus. The data will be presented
in the form of spread sheet and report which will be evaluated for the further action in future.
Project Outcomes
Carbon monoxide gas is one of the leading causes of accidental poisoning deaths in the world.
This gas cannot be seen, felt, smelt or tasted. As a result of which many people do not realize
that they are suffering from CO poisoning until it is late. Since the symptoms of CO poisoning
are similar to that of flu many people do not predict it to be dangerous. Having a device that
can detect CO concentration around us is an excellent way to prevent and be protected from
such kind of harmful gas.
This project is mainly focused to aware people about how harmful gas can be detected. In
United States, Consumer Product safety commission has started to keep carbon monoxide
detectors at home but this kind of detector is hard to be used outside. Since my robot will be
capable to move around in the different location so it will be more easier and effective way to
detect carbon monoxide.
After the project is completed, the smart robot and its report will be handed over to the
Electrical and Computer Engineering department. The department can then use my report to
do more experiments and evaluate my data to prevent and reduce the gas concentration.
Outreach Approach
The smart robots are small, self operating and can be used in places where human beings
cannot go. This robot will be able to perform variety of tasks based upon its artificial
intelligence. The robot will be programmed in such a way that it will detect, identify, evaluate
and send us the required information.
The robot will be controlled by GPS (Global Positioning System) to be sent in different locations
around campus. The robot will sense and detect the amount of CO gas around that location and
send information via signal to my computer. In this way I will be able to optimize and pin point
the locations where the CO gas concentration is high and will be noting them in my report for
further evaluation and correction. The robot will be sent to different location around campus
every week to observe and report the CO gas concentration.
Participation and Support
For this project, I will be working under the guidance and advice of Dr. Richard wall. Dr. Wall is
an experienced and highly qualified professor in Computer and Electrical Engineering
Department in University of Idaho. He has worked on the field of micro controllers for last 20
years. His main contribution to the society has been in the field of distributed processing and
power system transient modeling. In this project he will be guiding, evaluating and giving me
feedbacks on my progress as I go on. Dr. Wall has also asked me to use one of his laboratories
to do this project as I will need some power tools and devices to get the project ready.
Project Administration
The duration of this project will take about three months. I will start the project from May 15,
2013 till August 21, 2013. The lists of the timeline along with activities I will be performing are
listed below. The budget plan and fund collected will be deposited into my college account
under the supervision of my advisor. My advisor will be then keeping track of all the monetary
activities going on for the project. He will also be active in getting necessary tools and parts that
will be used during this project.

Plan for Future Action
This project will help University of Idaho to recognize the location on campus that needs to
have healthy environment by pointing out the location where the gas concentration is high.
After me this project will be handed to Electrical and Computer Engineering department. The
department will then use my project and share it with other students so that they can come up
with more innovative and improvised ideas for the robot. The project will also create an
opportunity for some student to find out how to identify and control the cause of the excessive
gas concentration on those locations.
Team members Qualification and Interests
I think I am qualified for this project because I am from Computer Engineering major and I have
deep interest on programming and micro-electronics. In last couple of year I have taken lots of
programming and electronics classes such as CS 210, CS 270, CS 240, ECE 310, ECE 340, and ECE
350. The topic sensor was taught in one of the Computer Engineering classes (ECE 340) at
University of Idaho. By taking these classes I got excited and interested on sensor so it has
inspired me to do this project. By doing this project, I will develop my skill getting into a
graduate school with a research focus towards electronics.

Budget Justification:
In this project I will be using Rc car, microcontroller, sensor and Bluetooth devices. The Rc car is
used so that I will be able to control the movement of smart robot powered by battery which
can move back and forth with the help of keyboard. Microcontroller is used so that I can
program my smart robot to be able to sensing. For the sensing I will be using the sensor which
will be attached to my micro controller and with the help of Bluetooth I will be able to have
communication between robot and computer. The robot and computer will act like master and
slave device. In this project the master will be computer by which we can give instructions
about what to do and where to move. The slave will give data to master in form of
acknowledgement bits and we will be able to collect data.
In conclusion, this research will be great achievement in the field of science and engineering, as
we will be building a sensor robot that will be able to sense the Carbon monoxide. This research
will also protect the human beings and animal from fatal poisoning. My research can be used
particularly to bring awareness to study about toxic gases and their effect in an environment.
The research will provide insight to all the information that we were not aware of, creating
probability to advancement technology and leading the younger generation toward modern
innovations.
