As Bible Raps works with educators from all sorts of contexts (i.e. Hebrew Schools, Day Schools, Summer Camps, etc.) and different age groups – this lesson is not directed to a specific age range and suggests differentiated activities for a variety of settings. Along with the lesson, we provide the sources so that educators can cut and paste according to their individual needs. Objectives: Students will explore the uses and functions of fire in TaNaKh Students will explore the uses and functions of fire in Jewish ritual Students will engage in expressing Torah content through the medium of rap/poetry Students will analyze the role of fire in the Hanukkah story Procedure: Opening: Chassidic Story o Use to evoke a discussion of the different functions of fire. A student once asked his teacher, the Baal Shem Tov, "Why is it that you are constantly travelling from city to city and village to village, when most Torah scholars stay in their academies and receive students from all over the world?" The Baal Shem Tov answered, "My dear, the teachings of Chassidut are like fire, while the teachings of the Talmud are like water. All those who are thirsty flock to water; however, most people flee from fire. Therefore, I must travel to my students, and teach them that Chassidut is not a fire that consumes, but one that illuminates and inspires.” Create a T-Chart on the positive and negative functions that fire has o o Positive: Light, warmth, cooking, ritual/memorial, decoration etc. Negative: Destruction, harm/pain, etc. Listen to the Bible Rap “Light is in the Air” Identify the different ways fire is mentioned in the rap o Light, Burning Bush, Revelation, God’s presence, sacrifice, wrath, Judaism, miracle, etc. Match Torah verses to Rap lyrics o For younger students: o For older students: Print out the verses/citations and have them paste it next to the appropriate lyric Give them the chapter and have them find the appropriate verse Assign groups of 2 or 3 to a section of text provided on “Fire in TaNaKh” sheet o Groups study their section and write a 2 line couplet that expresses the way fire is functioning in their piece Younger students will need more guidance in this process “The ‘How To’ of Rapping” sheet included to assist teachers in this 3 www.bibleraps.com Go around to have groups read out their couplet o Discuss different ways fire/flame is used in Judaism today o By putting together all the couplets, you create a class “Bible Rap” for Hanukkah Shabbat/Holiday candles, Havdalah Candles, Yertzheit Candles, Hanukkah Candles, Biur Hametz (burning the hametz before Pesach), “No lighting fire on Shabbat,” Ner Tamid, etc. Make 8 flames out of colored paper o Assign 8 groups for each flame and each flame represents a different way that fire/flame is used in Judaism Older kids: Younger kids: Groups can find on-line articles that are topical with their subject (i.e. http://haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArtVty.jhtml?sw=candle&itemNo=1130905 – article about how candles were used to memorialize the Mumbai bombing) – summarize or paste articles onto flames Find liturgical passages that represent different usages and use those passages to decorate the flame Illustrate the flame to represent the appropriate usage Go through magazines to find pictures of the different flame usages Compare students’ Jewish presentation of flame to how it functions in Peter Yarrow’s song “Light One Candle” Light one candle for the Maccabee children. Give thanks that their light didn’t die. Light one candle for the pain they endured when their right to exist was denied. Light one candle fot the terrible sacrifice justice and freedom demand. Light one candle for the wisom to know when the peace-maker’s time is at hand. Don’t let the light go out: it’s lasted for so many years. Don’t let the light go out: let it shine through our love and our tears. Light one candle for the strength that we need to never become our own foe. Light one candle for those who are suffering the pain we learned so long ago. Light one candle for all we believe in, let anger not tear us apart. Light one candle to bind us together, with peace as the song in our heart. What is the memory that’s valued so highly that we keep it alive in that flame? What’s the commitment to those who have dies when we cry out they’ve not died in vain? We have come this far always believing that justice will somehow prevail. This is the burden and this is the promise and this is why we will not fail. Using the Hanukkah story as told in the Babylonian Talmud (Shabbat 21b), have students answer the following essay question. o o Younger kids: Compare the fire/flame of Hanukkah to the miracle of the burning bush. What are the similarities? What are the differences? Older Kids: Based on your analysis of all the different ways fire functions in Torah, what can we learn from the fact that the “miracle of Hanukkah” takes on the form of fire? 4 www.bibleraps.com “Light is in the Air” Matt Bar, Bible Raps CHORUS Light is in the air, more fire, more fire light is in the air more fire (X4) Exodus 3:2 2 Kings 1:9-14 1 Kings 19:12 2 Maccabees 1:18-19 BT Shabbat 21b Uh-oh you lit, now we shall revisit the burning bush is in your building or perhaps you are forgetting let's go back to the beginning: Moses - a bush is burning and there is a voice within it, and there is a voice within it Echoed to Sinai, the fire that descended, never-ended through the desert so the night-time was suspended and its up on Shlomo's altar, ‘til his temple building ended to Elijah's fire, grilling with a vengeance cause the fire inside us that is what the light is that small still voice and it seems to have gone quiet... BT Shabbat 21b מאי חנוכה What is 'Hanukah? The rabbis taught: "On the twenty-fifth day of Kislev Hanukah commences and lasts eight days, on which lamenting and fasting are prohibited. When the Hellenists entered the sanctuary, they defiled all the oil that was found there. When the government of the House of Hasmoneans prevailed and conquered them, oil was sought (to feed the holy lamp in the sanctuary) and only one vial was found with the seal of the high priest intact. This is what rappers call a “bar.” A bar is one line of “one – two – three – four” say slowly and rhythmically out loud what is in the quotes Within this bar one finds the rhyme scheme, which happens on the four-count. Say slowly and rhythmically out loud the following: “one- two-three-four one-two-three-door” Clap your hands with the four count (slowly and rhythmically) as you say the example from “David vs. Goliath” below to the beat. Take note how the four counts rhyme. Notice that they don't have to rhyme perfect only approximately to get the sound right for the listener. 1 --------2-----3-------4 I am goliath I am a beast ----------------1-----------2-------------3------------4 Send somebody to the field so the birds can feast -----------------1-------------2-----------------3----------4 Send some body to the field they come up to my knees 1--------2-------------3-----------------4 9 feet tall with a spear that can reach By increasing the number of rhyming syllables, the rap gains more dynamics Two syllable: (Example from “Exodus CH. 5”) Moses and aaron, who you think you're scarin’ I created the Nile so it should be apparent I'm a crocodile and your god is sparrow thus said hashem, no thus said pharaoh Three syllable: (Example from “Purim Rap”) Haman what’s with the attitude I don't know why you're trying to get us so mad at you Mic check one two, venahafochu, You tried to make us cry so we laugh at you Four syllable: (Example from “Noah”) ...just some high pitched screams like a shoalin shouting the waves all around they will be pounding the ground in two by i got the animals surroundin’ abscoundin’ up to the top of the yacht and then around in and down in You can even add internal rhymes to the lines to add some flare. Internal rhymes: (Example from “Purim Rap” and “David vs. Goliath,” respectively) My name is, haman, i ain't playin', you should cower to see The other side, of the tide, when i'm chillin on the beach 14 www.bibleraps.com 15 www.bibleraps.com
