Callum Macleod had some occasional very slow laps due to gear selection issues in Richard Utley’s Caravelle Mk II but nevertheless he made a time of 1’39.971” to head Class D2 whilst David Grunberg’s Lotus 20 being the sole representative of Class D1 chalked up 2’04.556” and Robert Barrie ran 11 laps in his Lotus 18 to lead Class C2 with 1’47.118”. George Cooper’s Class H Cooper T59 received a small sprinkling of Jon Milicevic’s magic dust and produced a 1’48.761” lap ~ George being very happy with the car but complaining that he now needed some more magic dust to improve the driver. The cars assembled on a revised grid without the Crosslé of Andrew Robertson meaning that for the second race running it was another dns bpt 1’48.035” Shown in results as Class C2 dna dna completely disastrous weekend for the Walker/Robertson family, such a shame for them. Following a green flag lap the cars were held for only a few seconds before the red lights extinguished and Milicevic led away from a very close Welch as they tore up the hill followed by Murray. Most unfortunately Paul Smeeth immediately retired his Lotus 22 and Macleod passed Murray after one lap and set about catching Welch. However, his exuberance was to no avail and next time round Macleod was well out of leadership contention in 8th place. Anthony Smith made a great start, his Lotus 22 getting ahead of Cooper, Anthony Goddard’s Tojeiro and Barrie, although all except Goddard had re-passed by lap 5. Sadly Barrie retired after only two further laps leaving Besley’s Cooper T56 to lead Class C2 to the flag, ahead of Kevin Musson’s Lola Mk3. Hall’s BMC Mk2 didn’t show true form but Michael Hibberd turned on the charm to finish 4th, his lovely Lotus 27 as if on rails as indeed was the similar model of Nicholas Fennell. Mark Woodhouse’s Lotus 20/22 had a grassy moment, which is very unusual for him and Simon Diffey’s Lotus 20 just didn’t seem to be on form finishing two seconds ahead of Andrew Wilkinson’s Cooper T59. Andrew Hibberd’s Lotus 22 fell back from a steady 5th to 8th on lap 9 but James Claridge had his Lola 5A well in hand finishing 6th. John Sykes Merlyn Mk5/7 gradually reeled in Chris Drake’s Brabham BT6 and on the final run to the flag he made a lunge and was so close, merely 0.072” behind. Lotus cars were everywhere in this race, in fact a dozen of them and right in the middle were Mark Pangborn and Peter Anstiss. Pangborn got his 20B past the 20/22 of Anstiss on lap 2 and Anstiss then fell back, but when Pangborn dropped a couple of places on lap 6 Anstiss was through again and pushed on to finish 11th. Meanwhile Milicevic had gradually increased his lead over Welch to nearly 8 seconds before noticeably slowing on the last two laps to take the chequered flag. Alessandro Ripamonti was a surprise no-show in the Wainer 62, and Patrizia Sbardolini as R3 elected not to make the trip, so Dick Van Amsterdam, back with BT2) being very happy to have Tommaso Gelmini (Branca) still in his sights, while Peter Anstiss (Lotus 20/22), Ivo Göckmann (Jolus), and Christian Cane (Lotus 22) were close indeed. With Salodini’s demise, Jan Biekens (Stanguellini) cemented his Lurani Class lead, while the extraordinarily front wheel drive Bond continued to dominate Class B, with Justin Fleming perhaps a touch cautious after his incident in practice, some 8” adrift. Duncan pulled up a lap from the end with continuing engine problems. Race 2, and Peter Anstiss had muddled his flight times, so was on his way to Geneva airport, while Matt King and Dan Setford had been working hard on both Nathan Kinch’s 22 and David Hall’s BMC Mk2 – but to no avail: the 22’s clutch would not disengage and the BMC was wheeled away with head gasket troubles, thus leaving a space for both Robin Longdon’s Lola Mk2 and Sid Hoole’s BT6. With the front row to himself, Tonetti lead from Bruno Ferrari, damage repaired, and Rossi. Lap 4 and Rossi passed Bruno, and on lap 10 nipped past Tonetti. The leaders remained in close touch, but Tonetti did not need to worry with Rossi, knowing that both he and Ferrari were out of the aggregate contention. A second and a half separated the first two at the flag. Urs Eberhardt (Lotus 27) had held an excellent fourth until the last lap when he hit the oil, and spun harmlessly into the gravel, but behind was a great David and Goliath dice between Marc AmezDroz and Chris Chilcott, the latter getting ahead on lap 12, but Amez-Droz’s superior discs earned the place back after 2 more laps. Christian Traber made a fleeting pit stop on lap 5, and recovered well to finish 8th. Sid Hoole enjoyed his race, finishing 10th ahead of John Dowson (Brabham BT2), while, two laps from the end, Kim Shearn made an optimistic move on Steven Tonneman’s similar Lotus 20/22 and earned himself a disqualification from the stewards. In the front engined classes, Andrew Tart again triumphed over Justin Fleming, Duncan pitting, again with overheating, and Robin lasting by 2 laps. The other Aussies had mixed fortunes, the Koala clocking up a good finish, but Bill Hemming retired with loss of power, however Tony Simmons (Brabham BT6) had a great dice with Larry Kinch, ending up just 0.1s ahead. DCPR the Belgica, and Paulo Marzatico (Branca) were elevated to the grid. When Robin Longdon failed to record a time in the Lola Mk2 in official qualifying, this pushed Duncan, who had dropped himself down the reserve list, on to the last spot, leaving only Sid Hoole (Brabham BT6) and Robin as bystanders. Friday, perhaps deceptively, indicated that it would be close at the front, with Nathan Kinch (Lotus 22), albeit with only 9 laps to his credit, a fraction ahead of Pierre Tonetti (with 15 under his belt) and Manfredo Rossi (Lotus 22), Bruno Ferrari (Branca) and Marc Amez-Droz (Brabham BT6) in close company. A surprise and lonely tenth was Urs Eberhardt (Lotus 27), electing to make the trip back to Zurich, overnight, to pick up a new head for the Urban Fassler Ford motor. Both Erwin Van Gelder (Lotus 20/22) and Christian Traber (Lotus 22) managed less than a handful of laps pushing Christian well down the order, while all the Australians had their troubles, especially the Koala engine. As Justin Fleming drove in to the paddock after free practice, one rear wheel literally fell off – only to find that the other was about to do the same! Fortunately this had not happened on Dijon’s long straight! A quick phone call to Kirkby Mallory, and John Arnold was stripping Elva 100/27 and sending a personal courier to Dijon to arrive overnight. Amazingly the car was fixed, and Justin was ready to roll for Race 1! Race 1 on Saturday saw a great duel between Tonetti and Nathan Kinch, after Rossi deposited himself in the kitty litter on Lap 2, but sadly Nathan pulled up after 12 laps before briefly continuing to the pits, at least with fastest lap by one-thousandths of a second! Tonetti’s victory was rendered safer than ever when a charging Bruno Ferrari went off in pursuit on the penultimate lap, even more so when Marzatico, also Branca mounted, out braked himself a lap earlier and collided with the Daniele Salodini’s Taraschi, earning himself a race disqualification and a very unhappy Salodini. All this elevated Erwin Van Gelder (Lotus 20/22) and a surprised but happy Urs Eberhardt to the podium followed by excellent drives from Chris Chilcott (Lotus 20) to lead Class D and Christian Traber (Lotus 22) who had made up well from his lowly grid position.
