Meir Garden Until three years ago, Meir Garden was just another park in the middle of Tel Aviv, without any special affinity to the gay community. But it has since turned into the heart of the LGBT community's activity. In the shopping center on Dizengoff Street is one of the community's favorites. The Center has a wide variety of Israeli fashion boutiques, cafes, cinemas, and more, as well as one of our favorite gyms. It's a crime not to drop by. I like this slogan because, for me, it has much more meaning than its common, everyday use. I see the importance it attaches to worth - to value - which articulates the essence of Tel Aviv-Yafo and its values - which is a tolerant, liberal, and unfettered city, where each and every individual can feel proud and be proud of who they are. The aspiration to carry out the values set forth in our Proclamation of Independence - liberty, equality and freedom of conscience - has not yet been fully realized, and it is an obligation shared by all of us. We must fight for every person›s right to live according to his beliefs and conscience, and wage a campaign against bigotry and the demon of violence in Israeli society. Practicing what it preaches, Tel Aviv-Yafo is also proud that it maintains and actively promotes efforts to create a more open and accepting society. In the past decade the city has experienced a revolution in terms of its attitude towards the gay community, which today is an integral part of our social and cultural fabric and so much so, that two men, or two women, can walk together hand in hand on any Tel Aviv boulevard without fear or feeling ill-at-ease. The Municipality has taken many steps to make a welcoming home for the gay community, including the establishment of the Gay Community Center which is budgeted by the city. The Center helps promote gay culture and provides a formal infrastructure for gay volunteer organizations that work in the city and extend support to gay teens, their parents, HIV carriers, and many others. Furthermore, the Gay Pride Parade, which is produced by the Municipality, has long become one of the city›s symbols, attracting tens of thousands of participants, including scores of tourists from around the world. Our city’s special atmosphere does in fact draw international attention, witnessed by the fact that Tel Aviv-Yafo was recently chosen as one of the hottest destinations for global gay tourism. The contribution made by gay tourism is already visible in the field - this year, for the first time, we designated a special pride section at Hilton beach where there is an information booth for tourists and music is played for the enjoyment of residents and tourists alike. The gay community serves as a true example of tolerance and openness, and even lights the way for other groups in Israel. Tel Aviv-Yafo will continue to act in the spirit of these values, giving each individual in the city a welcoming home, assistance and support. I congratulate the gay community as it kicks off the events of Gay Pride Week 2011, and its day of celebration is also a celebration of the entire city.
