1. Explain the zero-product property and why it is useful. Give an example to illustrate your
explanation.

Sample answer: The zero-product property states that if a
product of factors is equal to zero, then one or more of the factors is equal to
zero. For example, in the equation x 2  4 x  12  0 the polynomial
x 2  4 x  12 can be factored as (x + 6)(x – 2). Since this factored
polynomial is equal to zero, then the value of at least one of the factors is 0.
This fact is useful because you can easily solve the equations x  6  0 and
x  2  0 to find the solutions x = –6 and x = 2.
