WYDOT 840.0 (Rev. 02-12) LIQUID ASPHALT SAMPLING Scope: Submit sample(s) to the Materials Program according to the requirements described below for all liquid asphalt (each different type or grade) supplied for road construction or maintenance projects. Examples of the referenced Forms T121 and Forms E-221, E-223, and E-224 follow in this section. Use: Asphalt samples are required for many products for QC and QA testing. While this procedure can be used for both types of samples, it must be followed for QA samples. Refer to the applicable specification to determine the necessity, number, and time frame of sampling asphalts. Apparatus: 1. Sample containers (clean) a. b. 2. 3. 4. Heat resistant gloves - liquid temperatures may exceed 150° F Clean rags for cleaning off excess liquid asphalt from outside surface of container. Do not use water or any solvent (gasoline, diesel fuel, etc.) to clean the outside of the sample container(s). Sampling valves a. b. c. 5. For Cutback Asphalt (MC, RC, and SC) and performance graded asphalt binder (PGAB), use metal cans, small mouth, screw cap (American Can #10201/#18914 lid) or equivalent. For Emulsified Asphalt, use plastic bottle/jar, screw cap (Nalgene #2104-0032) or equivalent. For tankers, see Figure 1 of this section, “Typical Sampling Valve for Tanker” For storage tanks, see Figure 2 of this section, “Typical Sampling Valve for Storage Tank” For asphalt supply line, see Figure 3 of this section, “Typical Sampling Valve for Asphalt Supply Line” Documentation - each sample requires the following documentation a. b. c. d. Form T-121, Sample Transmittal Asphalt Weight ticket/information (Cutback Asphalt and Emulsified Asphalt) or Invoice (PGAB) Certificate of Compliance (COC) Bill of Lading (BOL) or shipping manifest Note: BOL may include all appropriate information 6. REFINERY Acceptance Samples a. b. Sample - one quart Point of Acceptance - supplier obtains acceptance samples for each conveyance at the time of loading. 1. Cutback Asphalt samples arrive with tanker at job site Note: 2. c. d. If no sample, obtain a field check sample (see below) and add the note AIn Lieu of Refinery Sample@ to the Remarks on the Form T-121. Emulsified Asphalt samples go directly from the supplier to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory. Frequency - one sample per conveyance (tanker or tanker/pup) per type/grade Identification 1. 2. Identify cutback asphalt samples using designation from Form T-128 (CSR-CBA) and number them in the order they are obtained. Example: CSR-CBA #1, CSR-CBA #2, CSR-CBA #3, etc. Identify emulsified asphalt samples using Bill of Lading (BOL) or manifest numbers. Note: DO NOT use AControl Number@ from the BOL 3. e. Include required documentation(s) with each sample. Other - record receipt, payment, etc., information on the appropriate form(s) as described in the WYDOT Construction Manual (i.e., E-223 and E-224, respectively). 2 WYDOT 840.0 (Rev. 02-12) 2. FIELD Check Samples a. b. c. d. Sample - one quart Point of Acceptance - obtain sample from sampling valve on tanker/pup or plant storage tank. Before taking sample, draw and discard at least 1 gallon of material from the sampling valve. Frequency - one sample per 200 tons Identification 1. 2. 3. 4. e. Identify cutback asphalt samples using designation from Form T-128 (FCS-CBA) and number them in the order they are obtained. Example: FCS-CBA #1, FCS-CBA #2, FCS-CBA #3, etc. Identify emulsified asphalt samples using designation from Form T-128 (FCS-EA) and number them in the order they are obtained. Example: FCS-EA #1, FCS-EA #2, FCS-EA #3, etc. Include required documentation (see page 1 of this section) with each sample. Submit sample to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory. Other - record receipt, payment, etc., information on appropriate form(s) as described in the WYDOT Construction Manual (i.e., E223 and E-224, respectively). PERFORMANCE GRADED ASPHALT BINDERS (PGAB) ***IMPORTANT*** Also include required documentation noted on page one of this section for all tankers NOT SAMPLED. 1. FIELD Acceptance Samples - DO NOT accept samples from truck drivers of Performance Graded Asphalt Binders (PGAB). a. b. c. Sample - two quarts Point of Acceptance - at the plant site, the contractor will obtain the sample(s) from the sampling valve on the asphalt supply line between the storage tank and mixer. Before taking the sample(s), draw and discard at least 1 gallon of PGAB from the sampling valve. Sample ONLY when the hot mix plant is in operation. Submit sample to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory. 3 WYDOT 840.0 (Rev. 02-12) ***IMPORTANT*** The WYDOT inspector will observe sampling. If anything is questionable, the WYDOT inspector will record it in the field diary. c. Frequency - one sample per 100 tons. This represents one sublot for one lot. Note: d. Identification 1. 2. 3. e. NO SAMPLE REQUIRED if project quantity is less than 100 tons (submit certifications) Identify performance graded asphalt binder samples using designation from Form T-128 (Q-PGAB) and number them in the order they are obtained. Example: Q-PGAB #1, QPGAB #2, Q-PGAB #3, etc. Mark both sample cans with the Lot and Sublot numbers and securely tape them together. Example: Lot 1- Sublot 2 is L1-SL2, etc. Include required documentation (see page 1 of this section) with each sample and comments, if any, about sampling. Only one set of documentation is required for each pair of cans. Maintain proper chain-of-custody (i.e., the correct pair of cans with the correct documentation) prior to shipment to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory. Other - record receipt, payment, etc., information on appropriate form(s) as described in the WYDOT Construction Manual (i.e., E221). Note: Wait until each lot is complete before submitting samples and documentation to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory. A >standard= lot equals 5 sublots, but may vary from three to seven sublots depending on circumstances. If an >incomplete= lot exists at the end of paving season and project continues the following year, submit the lot >as is= for testing - do not wait until the next season to complete it. 4 WYDOT 840.0 (Rev. 02-12) Figure 1 - Typical Sampling Valve for Tanker 5 WYDOT 840.0 (Rev. 02-12) Figure 2 - Typical Sampling Valve for Storage Tank 6 WYDOT 840.0 (Rev. 02-12) Figure 3 - Typical Sampling Valve for Asphalt Supply Line Typical sampling valve is Rod Seal Valve/Figure 8115 Sampling Valve with a Acontoured halfcoupling@ (for mounting to asphalt supply line pipeline) manufactured by Fetterolf Corporation, P.O.
