ONE SIDED MATCH.
Bears stamped their authority
over the bulls this week in what
can be best described as a one
sided wrestling match. The
Bears never loosened their grip
over the bulls and made the
bulls pay for every small rally
they enjoyed. The Bulls were
bleeding throughout the week
as there was no respite from the
unrelenting assault from the
bears. But the most fearful part
is that this is not the end of the
match and it seems that the
bears will take a heavy toll on
the index as it sights 4788 and
4561 as their next targets.

taking too long a time, these
companies will be bankrupt and
then the inflation can rise to over

The last week was not good

In this scenario, the market
did not perform well last
week. On Friday the market
rise in front of them and still not
being able to do anything. Government must now be ready for
an election anytime soon as this
government won’t be able to survive for long in this rising inflation scenario. Voting public is
never kind to such governments.

can buy PUTs of index or index heavy weights to take advantage of
the fall.
As a hedge one can go long on companies that may be benefited by
rising oil prices. One can consider Suzlon, which is in wind power
generation. Another sector that can be watched out for is Sugar.
Because fuel price hikes will be unable to keep pace with soaring
crude prices and as a result the ethanol mixing percentage in petrol
and diesel will have to be increased. Thus it will be good tiding for
the sugar companies.
STOCKS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
L&T (2843) has given negative bearish breakout, so SELL keeping a stoploss of 2900 for a target of 2757-2610.
UNITECH (268) has given negative breakout by closing below
the 50dma and is headed towards a target of 256-245. So SELL
keeping a stoploss of 278.
SHRIRAM TRANSPORT (337), has given a bullish breakout as it
has managed to close above 50dma and the indicators are showing continued momentum. SO BUY with a stop loss of 325 for a
target of 359-378.
We don't see any great value
bargains in the market currently.
The Sensex is likely to challenge the bottom of January
again. There are macroeconomic
concerns on inflation and rupee
front. Q2 results are likely to be
worse than expectations. Investors to look at sectors that will
benefit from the shift from road
to rail transport
The perfect storm since the last
four years has become the perfect nightmare. The global
macro economic picture has deteriorated significantly since
January. At best, we would test
the lows of the market and probably break it sometime in 2008.
Decisions to be made with the
economy in mind are being held
up because of an election that is
due perhaps in the next 6-8
months. It's hard to be optimistic at this point. The Federal
budget deficit is completely out
of whack and so is the inflation
and rupee. Therefore, the test
case for the markets would be
the Q1 results, which are due in
July sometimes, and the markets
will be disappointed with the
results.
The news flow through 2008
will have more negatives than
positives. The market bottoms
out much before the news flow
and probably we have seen the
worst in the first quarter. There
is some possibility that we might
test the lows. In general, we
would be trading above that
level on a whole. There will be
more stocks going down this
year compared to stocks that are
going up and there will be a
flight towards quality.
Both earnings and economic
momentum will be negative.
The GDP growth will flow down
to its sustainable level. It's been
a growing above trend. At the
current state of savings and infrastructure, the economy should
be growing anywhere around
7.5-8%. So, it will go to that
level. When it goes to that level,
it might also undershoot for
some time. Similarly, the corpo-
rate earnings sustainable level
is 15-20%, and it has been growing above that. It will go to that
band and there is
a possibility of
undershooting
for some time. So, both the corporate earnings and the economic growth momentum are
going to be negative.
We have had four years of a great
bull run. Most analysts and investors are looking and driving
by the rear view mirror and not
looking ahead. While bull markets know no top, bear markets
know no bottoms. There are a
lot of access valuations still.
Even if you knock the index
down to 16,000, and 4800 on
the Nifty, which is the often
talked about figures, and if some
calculation is done for time sales
of the companies going forward
or the PE ratio's of some of the A
group companies, we can see
that they are great value bargains for investors around.
Both inflation and interest rates
have a scope of moving up from
current levels. It's definitely going to be an issue in the immediate future. The best way to
play that is by being in companies which have a strong pricing power. So, they will be able
to pass on the inflation and inputs to the customers.
Oil is permanently going to get
a higher plateau. There will be
whole new generation of innovation coming on and in the
meantime, the market will have
to trade water. It's hard to be too
optimistic in the face of this.
There are always bargains available in the market. A lot of the
midcap stocks look fairly okay.
But, there are no expectations
of 25% earnings compounded in
them for the next five years. The
results should be lumpier than
linear and as a patient investor,
I will hold on to it.

Earnings downgrade amid rising input
and interest costs, high inflation and drying up of global liquidity due to credit
crisis remain major concern for the Indian stock market.
With parliamentary elections scheduled
next year (May 2009), the government
may leave no stone unturned in its attempt to tame inflation. This is bad news
for commodity shares from cement and
steel sector.
Meanwhile, as per a recent study by
CLSA, large amount of foreign currency
convertible bonds (FCCBs) issued by Indian companies are coming up for redemption in the next 18-24 months. After recent stock market volatility many
FCCBs are at risk of not converting i.e. if
the stock market remains subdued, it will
stop the bond holders from opting for an
equity conversion as it will be easier for
them to buy the stock from the open market instead of paying the agreed premium. This condition will ruine the Indian economy and stock market's. AKHIR

The structural growth drivers of the Indian economy remain intact - India's
economy is expected to witness a decentto-strong growth for a long period of time
due to favourable demographics. Acceleration in infrastructure creation will be
another driver of strong growth in India's
economy. (Ulips) and equity linked savings schemes (ELSS) of mutual funds,

fancy of small savers. ELSS funds saw
their collective assets jump more than
nine times to about Rs 16000 crore in
three years ending March 2008. In 2005
the investment limit eligible for income

losses in the week ended Friday, 23 May
2008 following concerns that soaring
global crude oil prices which struck
record high of over $135 barrel and spiraling inflation will impact growth.
The BSE Sensex slumped 785.30 points
or 4.50% to 16,649.64 in the week ended
Friday, 23 May 2008. The S&P CNX Nifty
declined 211.15 points or 4.09% to
4,946.55in the week.
MARKET ACTIVITY REPORT FOR
23/05/2008 on NSE
The market edged higher in early trade
after Securities Exchange Board of India
on Thursday, 22 May 2008, said it had
kept in abeyance a decision to impose
upfront margins for institutional trades
in the cash market. A sharp drop in oil
prices from a record high also lifted market sentiment. Inflation for the week
ended May 10 stood at 7.82% Vs 7.83%.
Sustained selling pressure in index pivotal led the market extend losses in midafternoon trade. S&P CNX Nifty closed
at 4946.55 down by 78.90 points.

ADLABS FILMS
Adlabs is India's leading film-processing firm, with nearly 70% of the Hindimovies market, processing almost all of
top- and mid-budget films.
Adlabs set up India's first IMAX dome
theatre in 2001, and subsequently took
advantage of the tax exemptions for
multiplexes and the shift in consumer
preference towards watching movies in
a multiplex. It has embarked on a massive multiplex rampup plan. It currently
has 107 screens, spread over 24 cities,
and a capacity of 31,000+ seats. The
company aims to reach 315 screens and
nearly 100,000 seats by March 2009.
The expansion is being done through a
combination of long-term leases with
mall operators, acquisition of smaller
multiplex chains (Rave, 23 screens) and
conversion of existing single-screen
halls (100+ screens) to multiplexes.
Under the leasing model, Adlabs will
pay a fixed rent to owners, while booking revenue and profit/loss.
Adlabs also has 45 FM radio licences
and the company has already started
over 33 stations.
In FY07, Adlabs entered the film-production and distribution business. The
company is targeting production of six
GVK POWER
GVK Power & Infrastructure (GVK) is a
holding company of its infrastructure
business. The company has interest in
various types of Power Generation viz.,
Gas, Hydel and Thermal, Roads & Expressways, Airports, Aviation, Ports,
SEZ, etc. The company is a listed entity
which operates in the above said sectors through its Subsidiary / Associate
Companies.
GVK's portfolio of assets includes the
Mumbai International Airport, a toll
road, six power plants, one coal mine
and one Special Economic Zone. With
an increasing proportion of India's infrastructure capex now happening via
the Public/Private Sector Participation
route, the opportunity landscape for the
infrastructure developers is expanding.
GVKPIL looks well placed to capitalize
on this opportunity.
GVKPIL presently owns 53.96% stake
in GVK Industries, which operates the
216 MW gas based Jegurupaddu CCPP
I in AP and 220 MW Jegurupaddu CCPP

to eight mid-to-high-budget movies annually. To minimise risk in this business,
Adlabs is working on a minimum collection basis through sale of rights, such as
satellite/overseas/music/DVD before release and has an experienced management team. In the film-distribution front,
Adlabs will release close to 20-25 movies each year, with significant presence
in distribution of Hollywood movies
(Spiderman 3 in 2007) in India, and Indian movies abroad.
Adlabs' aggressive growth in multiplexes
will dampen its near-term profitability.
Meanwhile, competition from other multiplex players is rising and costs, such as
rentals and power and fuel, are also impacting margins. The movie-production
and distribution business is also attracting a lot of players and this has raised the
cost of creative talent and finished content.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND BEFORE YOU TRADE
TRADING GUIDELINES (or how to trade using this sheet):
World indices
Continue on ...8
1. This model is based on the premise that the TREND LEVEL is the most important price level that
decides the intraday trend. Much like how the door or a window hangs by a hinge and sways in the wind,
the intraday trend also hangs by this TREND LEVEL and swings because of the demand-supply,
volatility and market sentiments prevailing in the market. Hence its importance in intraday trading.
2. Opening Price is considered around close of previous day. Avoid BUYING if Prices open abnormally
High and Avoid SELLING if prices open too low.
3. If the market price is stable above the TREND LEVEL, then GO LONG. and book profit near the
resistant level (res1 and res2)
4. If the market price is stable below the TREND LEVEL, then GO SHORT. and book profit near
the support level (sup1 and sup2)
5. STOP LOSS: Since you are aware of the ‘potential returns’ at the time of initiating an intraday trade
(difference between the entry price and profit targets), you should set up an appropriate STOP LOSS
around 1% above below of the trade price to protect yourself if the market turns and goes against you.
6. ALTERNATE STRATEGY: If you have already initiated a trade with clear-cut profit targets and a
stop loss level, and find during the course of the trading day that the market turns and goes the other way
and crosses the TREND LEVEL, then trade again:
.For
instance, if your first trade was a LONG trade and the market price drops through the TREND LEVEL to
lower price levels, then GO SHORT.
.
And, if your first trade was a SHORT trade, and the market price rises through the TREND LEVEL to
higher price levels, then GO LONG.
