Byron Bayers
The big news in
the cattle industry
this week has to be
the report that the
Canadian border
is opening to
purebred cattle.
Many people on
Byron Bayers
both sides have
anguished over not being able to
bring their cattle down or for the
Canadians to sell their cattle into the
US and not be able to deliver the live
animal to its new owner. The border
closing had a devastating effect on
the Canadian industry and I for one,
am happy it is opening.
I read a very interesting article in
the 52 nd Herd Sire issue of the
Canadian Hereford Digest this
week. The article is about testing
your herd for the Leptin gene.
According to the University of
Saskatchewan Genetic Research,
cattle with normal Leptin do not

Hereford Tour Season in Midwest
High Plains Hereford Tour
AHA Rep Jay Elfeldt and CHB VP
of Supply Jim Williams were tour hosts
for the High Plains Hereford Tour
September 10 th – 13 th . The tour
originated in Rapid City, SD on
Monday and continued through
Nebraska and Kansas and then back to
Rapid City. There were about 50
participants from 16 states that rode the
bus for almost 1,500 miles in the 3-1/2
day tour. This was a well-planned and
educational tour.
Hereford breeder stops were Baker
Herefords/JBN Herefords of Rapid
City, South Dakota; Monahan
Herefords of Hyannis, Nebraska;
Jamison Herefords of Quinter, Kansas,
Sandhill Farms of Haviland, Kansas;
Van Newkirk Herefords of Oshkosh,
Nebraska and Olson Ranches of
Harrisburg, Nebraska.
Each of these breeder stops were
different from the previous, showing us
different types of Hereford cattle,
different management practices and
how best to cope with the environment
in their region. Olson Ranches, Art and
Doug Olson, also conduct one of the
American Hereford Association’s Sire
Tests each year. It was very interesting
to the group to see how individual sires
are performance-tested. Olson’s fill a
vital niche to our
Hereford breed in
providing these realworld statistics.
Feedyard stops
were Decatur County
Feedyard of Oberlin,
Kansas; Ford County

Canadian Border to Re-Open:
Includes Breeding Stock
Washington, D.C. (Sept. 14, 2007) As expected, USDA has finalized its
rule that will open trade with Canada
to cattle born after March 1, 1999, and
to beef from cattle of any age. USDA
estimates the rule will go into effect on
November 19, 2007, or 60 days from
its upcoming publication in the Federal
Register.
“Once this rule enters into effect, the
primary result is expected to be
additional imports of Canadian non-fed
beef - rather than live cattle - which will
replace lean beef imports from other
countries such as New Zealand and
Australia,” said Gregg Doud, chief
economist for the National Cattlemen’s
Beef Association (NCBA).
USDA has adjusted its annual
estimate of older live cattle imports
pertaining to this rule from 657,000
head to only 75,000 beginning in 2008.
Doud and other industry economists
also do not expect this rule to vastly
impact the U.S. cattle market, for
several reasons:
• The age requirement in this rule will
disqualify many older Canadian beef
cows from importation for lack of
proper age documentation.
• Transport expenses, the strength of
the Canadian dollar, and surplus of
packing capacity in Canada are
disincentives to live cattle imports.
• This additional Canadian packing
capacity boosted Canadian cull cow
and bull slaughter by 50 percent
between 2004 and 2006, and has greatly
reduced any backlog of cull cows in
Canada.
• Although the price of cull cows in
Canada is currently about 20 percent
less than it is in the United States,
annual Canadian cull cow slaughter is
only 13 percent of that in the United
States. As a result, it is widely expected
that Canadian cull cow prices will
appreciate to U.S. levels almost
immediately after this rule goes into
effect.
• In the short term, analysts expect
U.S. cull cow prices to dip but still stay
above 2006 levels. Over the course of
the next year, it is expected that this rule
could potentially result in a net U.S. cull
cow price reduction of approximately
$1/cwt.
In its written comments on this rule
filed in March 2007, NCBA made
several requests of the USDA to
improve the rule.
“We asked USDA to ensure these
cattle are permanently identified from
Canada, which this rule requires. This
was important to NCBA members,”
said John Queen, a cattleman from
Waynesville, N.C., and 2007 president
of NCBA. “We also asked that this rule
be implemented in a way that would
minimize market disruptions, and both
the 60-day period and the age
verification requirement are expected
to ease this transition.”
South Dakota State Fair Futurities & Specials
(see page 14 and 18 for more coverage)
NCBA also requested USDA reevaluate the date set as to when
Canada’s feed ban was deemed
effective, because Canada has
identified a BSE case born as recently
as 2002. After reviewing the science,
USDA did not change the March 1999
date.
“That said, this date does not impact
herd health, food safety or trade, as
witnessed by continued trade following
discoveries of BSE,” said Doud.
“It may be popular to bash this rule,
but cattlemen win in the global
marketplace when trade is based on
internationally accepted guidelines,”
added Queen.
NCBA also expects this rule to enable
the United States to regain its feeder
cattle and breeding stock trade with

discounted ad rates in its November and
December 2007 issues.
Featured in the November issue will
be the SD Excellence Sale ads and

issue. The November issue is scheduled
to mail on October 23rd and the December issue is scheduled to mail on
November 20th.
In these special sections consignors’
ads will be grouped together and placed
near the main sale ad. Since the main
ad is at least a half page with color, each
consignor has the option of one free
color (our choice) to highlight their own
consignor ads. Additional discounts to
our already low rates apply to 4-color
and space.
Information has been mailed out to
past consignors. For further information
please contact either Malynda Carter at
605/925-7016 or 701/351-4758 or Jill
Hotchkiss at 605/866-4495.
“U.S. beef is highly valued all over
the world,” said Queen. “Prior to
December 23, 2003, the United States
was a net exporter of beef in terms of
dollars. The future for all segments of
our industry – its growth and
profitability for the next generation of
cattle raisers – depends on our ability
to sell all U.S. beef and beef products,
including breeding stock, to customers
around the world.”

HEREFORD AMERICA • October 2007
Letters to the Editors
Dear Jill,
Enclosed is a check for $25 to renew
our subscription to Hereford America.
We recently hosted the noon stop on
the first day for our state’s KHA Tour
on August 17th. Last December 31 we
ended our families 100 th year of
Registered Horned Hereford cattle
down thru three generations. I informed
those on the tour that we, at that time,
had achieved a 100% calf crop on our
99th and 100th year and now over six
months into this year and were blessed
with another 100% live calves this past
spring – 2007. That’s 2½ without a
single death loss. Also, I might add that
the 99th and 100th year calves, 2005 &
2006, were alive and well at weaning
time. We have been blessed.
My wife, Theresa Jo, and I went to
country school together – not too many
can say so now-a-days. We are also both
charter members of the Kansas Junior
Hereford Association, which I helped
get started back in the fall of 1957 – I
was also the group’s first President –
and then advisor for the next 10 years.
We had heard that one man said back
then, “Give them six months and they
will fold up.” That’s why I kept
encouraging them to strive to achieve.
This fall will mark the 50th year for our
KJHA organization.
Yours Truly,
Dwaine Waite, Winfield, KS
Hi Jill & Byron,
Just to let you know how much I
like your magazine. I just have a few
Herefords. I fell in love with them
when I was 11 years old and if I live
to be 111, I’ll still have them. My
cattle friends tell me to change breeds
but it goes in one ear and out the
other. I’m just an old bull-headed
(Hereford) Swede.

Dear Jill and Marc,
We just finished with the Minnesota
State Fair. I had the privilege of working
with and getting to know your new rep.
for Hereford America, Malynda Carter.
All of us in Minnesota were very
impressed with her smiling personality
and willingness to help.
As far as I am concerned, you hired
a good one with her talent of taking
pictures, etc. I look forward to seeing
her again, probably at the Gopher Sale
in December.

Bryan "Butch" Dale Cowan, 63, of
rural Quimby, died Aug. 13, 2007, at
Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City,
following a year and a half battle with
esophageal cancer.
Butch was born May 3, 1944 in
Holstein, to Harold and Harriet
(Friedrichsen) Cowan. He lived in
Galva until the age of three and spent
the majority of his life on a farm west
of Quimby.
He attended school at Grand Meadow
through his junior year of high school,
and graduated in 1962 from Marcus
High School. After high school, Cowan
joined the U. S. Army and was a
paratrooper in the 101st Airborne
Division, stationed in Fort Campbell,
Ky. He completed the U.S. Army
infantry school Airborne Course in
1966 and was discharged in 1967.
Butch married Monica Clow on June
14, 1971 at St. Paul's United Methodist
Church in Cherokee. Cowan was a long
time cattleman and farmed west of
Quimby for more than 40 years.
He owned and operated the Cowan
Cattle Company with his son, and they
ran a herd of Shorthorn and commercial
cows along with a small feedlot
operation. He also raised Quarter
horses, ran a flock of ewes, and spent
some time in the hog business. In recent
years in addition to the farm he

Butch loved the farm and everything
that went with it, especially his
Shorthorn cattle, horses and farming
with his Allis-Chalmers Equipment. He
enjoyed attending livestock events
across the country, and had taken a
special interest in driving horses. He
had just purchased a new team this
spring.
Butch was glad to see his children
and granddaughter carrying on the
farming and cattle traditions that his
family started. He was a member of the
Washta United Methodist Church, the
American Shorthorn Association,
Cherokee County Cattleman's, and the
Washta American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his
mother and father and his brother,
Malcom "Mick" Cowan.

Melvin Micheel
Melvin Micheel, 89 of Martin, SD
passed away August 18, 2007.
He was a part of the Hereford
Pioneering legacy in the Sandhills
having been involved with the cattle as
he remembered since he was “5 years
old.” His spirit, wisdom and wit were
something he willingly shared with all
those who came into his path.
Born in Boyd County Nebraska, on
May 26, 1918, Melvin Wilson was the
2 nd son of Carl A. & Ruth (Keller)
Micheel.
As a kid, Melvin said someone was
always sticking him on a horse or a calf.
One of the childhood memories, during
the birth of Marthena, the preschoolers,
Melvin and Dorothy turned up missing.
Carl saddled a horse to search and
found the two wanderers visiting the
school of “the older kids.” They
declared they had not gotten tired going
so far because they had ridden their
stick horses. As kids, the only broken
bone report was the result of a tractorcrank “kicking” Melvin. He was driven
over 40 miles of sandhill trails to the
doctor in Ainsworth. The Micheels
ranched mostly in Boyd and Cherry
county Nebraska during the early years.
From the Sunny Slope Ranch in the
spring of 1941, Carl Micheel sold most
of the herd totaling 10 carloads to a
Texas outfit. Melvin went with the
cattle from Valentine, Nebraska to
Texas. The cattle were all unloaded
once and half the cattle unloaded twice
for feed and water before they got down
to their Texas destination.
While still in Texas, in September of
1941, Melvin’s draft number 32 caught

up with him and he was called to the
service during World War II. “They
gave me 3 choices of schooling:
mechanic, armament and a 3rd one.
Melvin said he chose mechanic so they
sent him to armament. He “came out
after 4½ years, a tech sergeant, 3 up and
2 down.” His overseas tour was spent
in England and Germany.
What was left of our registered herd
that I didn’t take to Texas came up here
to South Dakota. Our first years after
moving, we ran cattle for other people
and pastured other people’s cattle to
build this ranch. The Micheel herd may
have numbered half dozen or so cattle
at the start of the South Dakota ranch.
Dad told me he was given 6 head of
heifer cattle when he got married in
1910 when living on the Hornby place
southeast of Valentine so he knew we
could do it again. Melvin said, “I
managed the paperwork and I knew
every cow that every calf belonged to.
I have always been able to match cows
with their calf. I can tell you the cow’s
number brand in her horn and I could
read the number from the house to the
barn.”
The Lacreek Ranch of Carl Micheel
and his two sons, Leon and Melvin
became one of the best in the West as
was told by America’s Herefordshire.
Just like every one else when Dad saw
all that water on this ranch he wanted
the place. We started the move in April
1941 to South Dakota. I just don’t know
for sure but I think Dad started raisin’
registered cattle about 1920. Some
ranches are noted for their hay valleys,
some for their pasture and others for
their natural watering facilities or their
scenery. The ranch is just west of
Highway 73 which connects Merriman,
Nebraska and Martin, South Dakota.
Extending on both sides of and along
Lacreek, which parallels the southern
boundary line of South Dakota, the
Micheel spread is credited with
incorporating the finest alfalfa valley
in Bennett County and without doubt,
one of the best in the Sunshine State.
Lacreek flows right out of the Sandhills.
Springs scattered all around the valley
pour their waters together, subirrigating a huge hay meadow in their
passing, watering Hereford cattle in
eight different pastures, dropping over
a lovely waterfall and eventually ending
up in Lacreek Wildlife Refuge. The
Micheels owned this valley. Crystal
clear water pours out the sand banks,
some springs with a flow of 1,000
gallons per minute.
There, all wrapped up in one ranch,
is diversification at its best; typical,
luscious sandhill pasture, hard grass
pasture, alfalfa hay, high quality wild
grass hay, alfalfa seed, a clear, shallow,
solid-bottomed, non-flooding creek that
seldom freezes and which flows thru
the center of the ranch, excellent winter
protection, and, to top that all off,
several deep, blue, clear spring-fed
trout and bass ponds.

Micheel...
(continued from page 8)
The quality of the Micheel Ranch is
well matched in quality by the fine
Herefords that have been bred there.
Carl Micheel was known for breeding
top Herefords for many years and his
sons carried on his legacy. In the words
of Ed Belsky (brother-in-law to Carl)
“Carl Micheel is one of the top cowmen
of the region.” Ed should know,
because a Hereford female from the
Micheel herd helped establish the
Belsky herd. To thoroughly review the
history of the Micheel herd would
require much more space than is
allotted here. Carl Micheel entered the
purebred Hereford business thru the
purchase of the Samuelson herd of
Kansas after it had passed into the
capable hands of and had been further
improved by Mr. Thompson, the father
of Lester and Fred Thompson of
present-day Hereford fame.
In 1922, another contingent of cows,
bred very similarly to the original herd,
were secured from the Murphy herd of
Cherry County, Nebraska. Both sets of
cattle were of the finest Gudgel and
Simpson bloodlines. The younger
Murphy cattle had received an infusion
of famous Jesse Engle Beau Blanchard

blood thru the use of a good Engle-bred
bull, Beau Blanchard 8th.
At Micheels only the very choice
heifer calves go into the purebred herd.
The second cut go into the top
commercial herd and all others go to
market. Micheel range bulls are in
demand and have gone to some of the
most particular buyers in this region.
Lacreek Valley was originally an
Indian Allotment owned by Seth Gerry.
Leigh Fairhead, who homesteaded a
quarter mile south, acquired the land.
This is now owned by the Micheels.
Fairhead’s homestead shack was
skidded down into the valley and was
built into a part of the Micheel’s
spacious rambling home. The basement
was set ready for the house. The house
was pulled up on the south side using
some planks across the foundation of
pipe rollers for some support. The fella
who was the boss told Melvin, “you run
the winch.” Melvin couldn’t see
anything, but “the fella would tell me,
just move it a little at a time. I pulled
this house over the foundation by his
direction, a little at a time.”
Melvin said, “I witched just one well.
In the sandhills you can get a well any
place. I think there were only 4 mills
when we first came to the ranch, today
the ranch has about 6 more for a total
of 10.”
In 1950, the first annual bull sale was
held at the Micheel Ranch, selling 41
bulls for $25,375, an average of $619.
Auctioneer was Charles Corkle. The
Micheels had sales from 1950 thru the
60s for about 14 or 15 years. Each sale
hosted 50-65 head of bulls, and as
Melvin said, “We sold ‘em all at every
sale. Some of the herd bulls were home
raised.”
Family and friends share the
numerous Micheel memories and many
were hired hands themselves on the
ranch at one time or another. November
2006, Melvin sold the last of the
Micheel herd. The Micheel Ranch
recently was sold to John & Cathy
Marcus. Cathy is the daughter of

Topp Herefords Cattlemen’s Conference
by Marc Hotchkiss
What a tremendous way to display your
breeding program and herd genetics to
producers! Ryan and crew of Topp
Herefords held their first annual
Cattlemen’s Conference and Pasture
Female Sale Saturday, September 8th.
There were over 150 commercial and
purebred breeders that attended and the
rainy conditions didn’t seem to dampen
the spirits of those attending; in fact most
of us were enjoying it after the last few
weeks of unseasonably warm, dry
weather.
Topps had divided a lush pasture with
an electric fence and had cows with their
heifer calves in one half and the bull
calves with their dams in the other half.
Attendees could walk through the cattle
or take one of the two covered golf carts
that were handy to keep dry and evaluate
the cattle. The heifer calves (or their dam
for 25% more) were for sale that day by
silent auction. Two dams were sold along
with 14 heifer calves for an average of
$5,036.
Features speakers were Tom Bresnahan
of Sinner Bros. & Bresnahan, Jack Ward
of the AHA with a Hereford 101 session
and Jim Williams of CHB with a CHB
update.
Ryan put a lot of thought and hard work
into this event and I’m sure it paid off.
Purebred producers interested in Ryan’s
program and genetics took advantage of
being able to go into the Topp herd and
select a female that would complement
or improve their own herd. Commercial
and Purebred producers alike could also
study the bull calves with their dams that
will be offered in the annual February Bull
sale held in Bismarck, ND. In my
estimation seeing the dam should be a
must for every prospective bull-buyer and
Topps made it easy to do.
Topp Herefords have worked hard in
the last decade to improve their genetics
and to also go a step further by providing
their customers with a means to market
the offspring. Ryan has an arrangement
with Sinner Bros. & Bresnahan, a
feedyard and marketing company at
Casselton, North Dakota to further
increase the value of Topps customer’s
cattle.
Ryan realizes the importance of
listening to his customer’s needs, current
beef industry demands and consumer
expectations and then reacts by providing
useful Hereford genetics and customer
service that is hard to beat.

Herefords were the featured beef breed
this year and they did themselves proud.
The largest crowd of Hereford enthusiasts
I’ve seen at the Wyoming State Fair
showed up to participate and watch a
show that had a large number of top
Hereford cattle.
Judge for this year was Frank Padilla,
who used to manage a Hereford ranch in
Nebraska several years ago. He is now
Director of Member Relations for the
Limousin Association and lives in
Centennial, Colorado.
Bret West of Lusk, WY, the current
president of the Wyoming Hereford

in the ring and with pictures.

High Plains Tour...
(continued from page 1)
City, Kansas and Royal Beef Feeders
of Scott City, Kansas. Each of the yards
had a very different approach to the
feeding aspect of the beef chain. One
couldn’t go wrong by feeding at any
one of these yards; you just had to pick
the one that best suited your needs.
The group was split up and toured
the National and Cargill Beef Plants in
Dodge City, Kansas. This portion of the
tour was new to several, never having
been in a beef plant. I think it made a
lot of us appreciate the sector of the
beef chain we were in and in not having
to deal with the many management
problems they deal with on a daily
basis. I think the tour through the plants
impressed on us the importance of food
safety and the efforts they take to insure
food safety.
The tour group also viewed the
damage caused by an EF-5 rated
tornado in early May of this year in
Greensburg, Kansas. The tornado was
1.7 miles wide and was on the ground
for 22 miles non-stop and 30 minutes.
Maximum winds were estimated at 205
mph. Eleven people were killed. You
just can’t imagine the destruction
caused to the small town by the tornado.
Jack Ward, COO of the AHA, was
also on the bus during much of the tour
and presented to the group several
projects currently being worked on by
the AHA. He also answered many
questions and discussed EPD’s – our
current ones and possible new ones and
how and why they are
significant to our industry.
It was the opinion of
many on the tour that this
should be done each year,
keeping it to only one bus
so that no part of the
education would be
missed by anyone. The
hours were long but the
mobile
hands-on
education is vital to our
breed and should be
shared with everyone.
Jay and Jim, you missed
your calling. You should
have been tour guides.
Thanks for the great tour.
Studying the cattle were (left) Glenn Oleen, Falun, KS; Art
Handel, Rapid City, SD; Mark Frederickson, Starbuck, MN;
and Bob Harrell, Baker City, OR.

Kansas Hereford Tour • August 18-19, 2007
While severe weather, including hail the size of softballs in the Dakotas,
Nebraska and Colorado prevented Marc and I from getting to the Kansas
Tour in time, KHA Sec. Tom Granzow and Dan Estermann graciously
supplied us with pictures and information. This year’s tour focused on
breeders in the southeastern part of the state. Sounds like a large crowd
attended the tour and the weather cooperated.

Did you ever take time to think
about the nicknames folks get tagged
with? Maybe some sections of the
country are a little worse for hangin’
a new name on a fellow than others.
I think ever’ Indian friend I have has

HEREFORD AMERICA • October 2007
Byron’s Editorial
(continued from page 1)
have the enhanced advantage for feed
efficiency and carcass merit as do
those cattle who carry a mutated form
of the Leptin gene, either in a
combined form or as a homozygous
mutated gene. In fact normal Leptin can
work against an animal’s ability to feed
more efficiency and lay on fat.
Cattle with the mutated gene tend to
have slower metabolism and tend to eat
more. The article went on to elude that
over 40,000 head of feeder calves were
tested in Canada this past year and
some very large outfits were among the
group. It was also reported that the
cattle testing positive for the Leptin tt
gene had a 3 cent lower cost of gain
and finished two weeks sooner.
Hereford cattle have already proven
they are the most efficient of the breeds
but this new test would yet add more
profit to the picture.
Get a copy of the quoted issue and
study the whole article as it is a very
new approach to further efficiency and
it claims to pinpoint your individual
herd bulls or cows that may be more
efficient. The cost appears to be
reasonable.
I hope that you read the article on
the front page of last month’s Hereford
America about the Canadian approach
to marketing Herefords in Canada.
Gordon Stephenson, the General
Manager of the Canadian Hereford
Association and his staff and the PastPresident of the Canadian Hereford
Association, Byron Templeton and his
board of Directors have done a
wonderful job of fitting together a plan
to promote Hereford interest and sales,
across Canada. The Canadian approach
could well be used by the AHA to
further the promotion of Herefords in
the U.S. The approach that I really liked
was the idea of visiting each sale barn
and every rancher possible to promote
the image of Herefords and to dispel
the myths that seem to haunt us. Many
years ago the AHA hired a person to
work the commercial trade in the U.S.
but the position was vacated after
certain segments argued that the money
should go to other sections of the
budget. That was an ill-fated move and
that position was never filled again.
Some of our “reps” through the years
did spend a lot of time on ranches, but
those people are now gone and the
practice is about vacated. I can
remember Dwayne Dietz, who worked
many years for the AHA, used to work
a bull sale and then follow some of the
bull buyers home and visit their
operations. It was a great PR move and
Dwayne would fit it into his schedule
going down the road to the next sale. I
really like the Canadian idea of not
going near a breeder or a purebred sale
and staying with the commercial sector,
because they are the ones that
ultimately keep us all in the business.
We had better know what the
commercial people are doing and
thinking!
Last week Pauline and I motored to
Idaho to the commercial sale of Laverl
Singleton, and wife, Patsie, which is
held at the Idaho Falls Livestock
Auction, each year. His entire crop of
Hereford yearling steers and nonreplacement heifers are marketed in this
fashion.
I have gone to the sale for many years
and Verl almost always tops the sale
with cattle of his weight range. This
year again Verl topped the yearling
Singleton Steers selling in Idaho Falls.
steers with his nice group of Hereford
steers. Usually a local buyer buys them
and they are fed in the local area. A
different buyer bought them this year
but they will be fed within a few miles
of where they were sold. I was told
they are usually sent to a Utah plant
for slaughter. Verl is a very dedicated
Hereford man who gets the job done
well with his cattle. It was a long trip,
but very enjoyable. The Hereford
always sells better when the people at
the auction barn will work with the
seller. The folks at the Idaho Falls yards
do work with Verl!
I was saddened when Dale Sand
announced his resignation as President
of the Montana Hereford Assn. a short
while ago and announced he was
leaving the Hereford business. It was
a big loss to us from a personal
standpoint too, as we had worked with
Dale for five years setting up a fine herd
near Power, MT. Dale is young, in his
30s, energetic, honest, hard working,
and strong as a bull. He loved Herefords
and the Hereford people. In a short time

barely knew each other. He was a big,
rawboned, long armed guy, and as his
wife worked in town, he didn’t get a whole
lot to eat that he didn’t scrounge up
himself.
My little woman is from the old school,
and it’s a cinch nobody leaves the place
hungry. She always cooks about twice as
much as she needs to, just in case
somebody like ol’ Bob happens in the
yard about meal time. She came out and
hollers, “Get washed up. It’s almost
ready.”
Getting him to stay for dinner didn’t
take much arm twistin’, because I’m pretty
sure he hadn’t had a square meal for a
week or so. I don’t think he’d ever been
inside our house before, and in her usual
style, the cook sets the table like she was
expecting a thrashin’ crew. She had a big
www.herefordamerica.com • 25
roast beef and mashed potatoes and all
the trimmings.
Now I’m tellin’ you that boy could eat.
He kind of reminded me of a half starved
coyote that happens on to a dead cow
and tries to finish her off in one meal.
‘Course the cook was in her height in
glory, and ever’ time ol’ Bob’s plate would
start getting a little low she’d start the
stuff around again. He’d just pile the grub
on, and tell her how great it was, and
she’d wiggle like a little puppy and pass
him something else. I didn’t think he was
ever going to get filled up.
The last time the meat and taters went
around, with a little extra encouragement
from the cook, he almost took more than
he could eat. As Granny used to say, “His
eyes durn near got too big for his belly.”
He’d had a good fetchin’ up, and was as
long on manners as he was on appetite,
so he wasn’t about to leave anything. He
just HAD to clean up his plate. The ol’
boy had quite a struggle, and it took him
a while, but he finally got around the last
of it. I’m sure he must have felt just like
that ol’ coyote when the cow was all gone.
He was just plain miserable.
We’d had quite a visit during dinner,
and hadn’t even noticed that the little
woman had whipped up a batch of
chocolate chip cookies while we were
eatin’. She’s always bustling around in
the kitchen doin’ something. She opens
the oven, and flips four or five nice fresh
hot ones on Bob’s plate, but for some
reason the sight of food just didn’t seem
to have the same appeal to him that it did
a half an hour earlier. He was too polite to
tell her he was about to bust and couldn’t
hold another bite, even though she didn’t
even give him a chance to pass.
That’s when he hatched this plan. He’d
just take a couple of little nibbles, and
slip the cookies in his pocket when no
one was lookin’. He wouldn’t offend the
cook, and he’d have a little something to
snack on later. It was a pretty good idea,
and it would have worked if it hadn’t been
for one of the kids.
One of our little rug rats was still short
enough to walk right under the kitchen
table, and was just walkin’ and talkin’
good. He comes around a corner, stops
right in the middle of the floor, points at
our guest, and says in a shrill two year
old voice, “Hey, look! Bob Crowe is
puttin’ cookies in his pocket!”
Needless to say he was nearly
embarrassed to tears, and carried the
handle “Cookie Stealin’ Crowe” ‘til the
day he died.
