The BCBC presents between 30 and 45 concerts each season. Where has the Choir toured internationally? Over the last six years, the BCBC has represented Canada on International Tours to China, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Scotland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Austria, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Morocco to name a few! What is the Choir’s Education Program? The Choir performs in Elementary Schools each year as part of their Education Program. This program is so successful, there is a two-year waiting list of schools wanting the Choir to perform. Do the Boys receive school credit? Choir members have received Grade 10 Arts Equivalent Credit for their participation in the Touring Choir. What else do the Choir members do? BCBC members play soccer, hockey and football on local, regional and provincial teams. They are just regular boys who like to sing! The British Columbia Boys Choir is a four-part secular boys choir, one of the few in North America. Over its 42 year history the Choir has trained over 900 members who have represented Canada on twenty international tours, performing a demanding repertoire spanning centuries, from Gregorian chant to contemporary works. Programmes frequently include sacred and secular works, selections from musicals and opera, folk songs from around the world, and an assortment of Canadian works; many specifically composed for the Choir. In addition to frequent radio and television appearances, the Choir has made over 20 recordings and a one-hour documentary film “Summer Song” profiling the Choir’s 10th tour to The Netherlands and has been viewed on television around the world. The Choir currently has six CDs on the market: Home, Gloria, Places, Symmetry, Spirit and Legacy. n addition to his position as Artistic Director of the British Columbia Boys Choir, Tony Araujo is founding Artistic Director of Corpus Christi College Chamber Choir and Spirit Alive Men’s Chorale. Mr. Araujo has developed an award-winning high school choral music program that includes five choirs, with over half the student body enrolled. He is recognized for the passion and musicality he consistently develops in his choirs as well as for his selection and interpretation of versatile repertoire. Mr. Araujo’s choirs have been invited to perform at international conferences and festivals throughout North America, Europe and Asia, including concerts at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, Canterbury Cathedral and the United Nations. Mr. Araujo’s contribution to choral music education has been featured on CBC radio and television, and in the documentary film, “Spirit Alive: The Tony Araujo Story”. Mr. Araujo conducts workshops for choirs of all ages, adjudicates festivals in Canada and the United States and was most recently invited to be guest conductor for the Northwest American Choral Directors Association Middle School/Junior High Honor Choir. Mr. Araujo is committed to the vocational and transferential aspects of the choral music experience, applying new theories and practices of depth psychology to cultural transformation and healing, and locating this work in the larger frame of academic scholarship. Mr. Araujo is a member of several professional organizations including BCMEA, CMEA, and ACDA, and a lifetime Honorary Member of the Golden Key International Honors Society. He is a national recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. British Columbia Boys Choir on TOUR A British Columbia Boys Choir concert includes a wide variety of choral repertoire from Gregorian chant to 20th-century works that they have commissioned. An audience might hear a Mass by Haydn, an English Folksong, an African Tribal Song with drum, and a rousing Spiritual! The Choir sings in as many as 10 languages, and through their introductions, shares with the audience why they are performing the music. Through its extensive touring the Choir has collected music and memories from across Canada and around the globe. Their CD, Places, is music collected while touring in other countries and their latest CD, HOME, is music performed around the globe by Canadian composers and arrangers. 2011–2012 Season Tours Christmas Traditions from Around the World November-December 2011 Touring British Columbia This show will include Christmas songs and Carols from different lands, interspersed with traditional readings and poems by the boys. A Carol Sing-aLong with Candlelight will put everyone in the spirit of Christmas.
