The Singing Tree Program
The Singing Tree is a joyful, fun-filled music and movement program for the
preschool child and parent. The Singing Tree uses a research-based curriculum
that is developmentally appropriate for the learning styles of young children.
Classroom music and movement activities encourage vocal development,
rhythmic and tonal development, growth in language skills, improved auditory
discrimination and memory skills, small and large motor skill development, and
the ability to socialize with other children and adults in the class. The program
is based on family interaction and participation. It is the intent of the program
that the musical activities presented in class will become part of the family
experiences at home. There are classes for preschool through kindergarten-age
children.
The birth to 4½ year old classes must have at least one adult per child attending
class. No siblings allowed. A Family Class is offered for families who would
be unable to participate in our program without childcare.
Children in the 4½ to 6 year old class attend class without a parent. However, in
order to meet the FUMC “Safe Sanctuaries” requirements, one parent from each
family must attend the first class and will be required to sign-up to observe at
least one class (perhaps two based on class enrollment) per semester.
Graduates of the program are encouraged to continue their vocal music studies
through participation in The Children’s Choir of Waukesha. This choral
program spans 1st through 12th grades in five different choirs.
The Singing Tree Age Groups & Descriptions
Birth - 1½ Years: This class includes bounces, wiggles, tickles, tapping and
instrumental play, clapping, circle games, dancing, story time and lullabies.
1½ - 3 Years: This class is similar in structure to the Birth - 1½ year old class.
However, the children are more vocally and physically active. The difficulty
level of activities is increased and large motor skills such as marching, jumping,
and galloping are added.
3 - 4½ Years: This class includes finger plays, action songs, pitch exploration,
simple songs, movement exploration, circle games, dancing, rhythmic and
melodic activities, instrumental play, and story time. Large motor skill
development includes walking, marching, jumping, and galloping. Children also
begin to skip and hop.
4½ - 6 Years: This class is similar in structure to the 3 - 4½ year old class.
However, the preschool-kindergarten age child is more independent and
therefore the difficulty level of activities is increased. Large motor skills are
perfected including hopping and skipping.
Family Class: This class incorporates aspects of all the four categories above.
Emphasis is placed on the interaction between siblings and adults. The older
children model activities for younger children and all children are given the
opportunity to respond to the music at their appropriate skill level.
