Important Terminologies

Important Terminologies
• Refrigeration
Effect or Cooling Capacity : It indicates capacity of
refrigeration/ AC. Quantity of heat abstracted from the cooling space / airconditioned space per hour is the Refrigeration Effect. It’s expressed in
‘Kcal/Hr’ or ‘BTU /Hr’ or ‘Ton’ unit and also can be expressed in Watts of
cooling
• Ton (TR): 1 Ton of refrigeration effect means that amount of heat-extraction
at which 1 ton (1000 Kg) of 0 DegC water is transformed into 0DegC of ice in
24 hours time.
1Ton (TR) = 3000 KCal /Hr = 12000 BTU/Hr = 3510 Watts
• Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)
Refrign. Effect in Watt / Input Power in Watt ( W/W)

Saving in Voltas Star Rated Ac’s
•
Star Rating: Govt. of India, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, started certifying the
Acs by testing at their specified labs for Energy Efficiency and started giving
labels (certificates) from 1 star to 5 star depending on the efficiency to save
electricity, that means higher the star marking higher the efficiency ratio and
higher the saving. The minimum EER
(W/W) for getting 1 star is 2.3 and so
on.
•
How, the Voltas star rated units can save electricity compare to non star rated
Acs . Calculation given in next slide is for voltas 1.0 tr gold split unit having 5
star rating and compared to non star rated unit

Capacity in watts/ power required to get the cooling = EER
For Vertis Gold 1 tr, Cooling cap is 3510 watts and power required is 1135
Watt
EER = 3510 / 1135 = 3.1
For non star rated AC, the EER will be 2.2 or below., so for achieving the
same cooling capacity of 3510 watts, the power required will be $ watts
3510 / $ = 2.2, so $ = 3510 / 2.2 = 1596 watts
That means, the non star rated unit of 1.0 tr capacity will consume 1595 watts
compared to the 1135 watts consumed by Voltas star rated AC
So, the power saving in one hour is 1596 – 1135 = 461 watts or 0.461 kwh or
units
•
•
•
Assuming 70% compressor running, for 8 hrs the power unit (KWH) saved is
0.461X0.7X8 = 2.58 units
Assuming power charges @ Rs. 5/- per unit, in one year, the saving will be
2.58X30X12 X5 = Rs. 4644.00 per year.
This is the saving in electricity bills of our 1.0 tr vertis Gold unit with
comparison to a non star rated unit of EER less than 2.2.
More about Star rating process by BEE:
1. Scope 1.1 This Standard specifies the energy labeling requirements for singlephase split and unitary air conditioners of the vapour compression type for
household use up to a rated cooling capacity of 11 kW and that fall within the
scope of IS1391 Part 1 and Part 2, being manufactured, imported, or sold in
India.
1.2 This Standard shall be read in conjunction with IS1391 Part 1 and Part 2 with
all amendments1, as applicable
Exclusions:
1. Air conditioners, which are not included within the scope of, IS 1391 Part 1 and
Part 2, pending the development of a suitable test method.
2. Multi-split systems (i.e., those having more than one indoor unit with an
independent control for each indoor unit)
3. Evaporative coolers or any other cooling systems that are not of the vapour
compression type.
2. Schedule of tests 2.1 Method of tests The testing code and procedure for air
conditioners shall be as per IS1391 Part 1 and Part 2 with all amendments.
Exception to IS 1391 part 1 and 2: All tests, including the Energy Consumption
and Capacity tests, shall be conducted in Balanced Ambient Calorimeters for the
purpose of check and challenge testing.
2.2 Parameters to be tested 2.2.1 Energy Consumption The Energy
Consumption test of the air conditioner shall be conducted as per IS 1391 Part 1
and Part 2 with all amendments.
2.2.2 Cooling Capacity The Capacity Rating test of the air conditioner shall be
conducted as per IS 1391 Part 1 and Part 2 with all amendments.
5. Sampling
Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) or its designated agency for testing as per the
following sampling plan will pick up the samples:
a) One sample will be picked up at random from the manufacturing facility or
warehouse.
b) One sample will be picked from a retail outlet.
Three units of each type shall be picked up for each test. The tests shall be
conducted on two of the three units, the third shall be kept as an alternative in
case one of the units is damaged or can not be tested properly for any other
reason..
