September 2 - 4
Hotels used: Hotel Wandl on Petersplatz 9, Hotel König von Ungarn (Conner) on Schulerstraße 10, Hotel
am Konzerthaus (Overland Holper) at Heumarkt 35-37, or Austria Trend Europa (Welsh Creed) at
Kärntnerstraße 32-34
September 3
8:00PM. Welcome at Zwölf Apostelkeller at Sonnenfelsgasse 3 for a snack and glass or two of wine.
September 4
9:30AM. Meet at the Hotel Wandl to walk over to the Museum Kunsthistoriches. We will need to enter
at the main entrance off of Maria Theresa Platz (rather than the side door on the Burgring indicated
earlier) to meet Guido Messling, Kurator, and Franz Pichorner, Deputy Director, for a guided tour. Given
the large number of us, please bring along 10 Euros p/p so that we can make a group donation to the
museum in lieu of buying group tickets.
Afternoon free. If possible, purchase a "weekly travel pass" for 15.80 Euros at a U-bahn underground
station or Tabac for the Vienna tram system. Purchasing tickets on trams, when possible at all, is
expensive and cumbersome.
6:30PM, Welcome Dinner. Huth im Musik Haus restaurant, 5th floor, on Seilerstätte 30. Casual dress.
Bring Euros to pay waiter for dinner (at 32 Euros p/p plus beverages).
September 5
9:30AM-12:30PM. Guided city tour. Meet at the Neuer Markt Platz fountain to be led on a walking tour
by Gretl Satorius, a IES-Vienna alumnus. Bring good walking shoes. She will extend the tour with a
stassenbahn ride around parts of the Ring. Bring your tram "weekly pass" and also bring along a gratuity
of 5 Euros p/p.
2PM to 4PM. Tour of IES-Abroad Center. After lunch, we meet at the IES-Abroad Center, the Palais
Corbelli, at Johannesgasse 7.
Afternoon and evening free.
September 6
A free day for independent touring. Schönbrunn and Belvedere palaces could be good choices as would
the highly rated Museum of Military History (Heeresgeschichtliches) near the Belvedere (see
www.hgm.or.at). The Palais Liechtenstein has public tours that afternoon at both of their palaces. At
5:30PM, theVienna Boys Choir performs at the the Music Center Augarten. At 7PM, La Traviata at the
Stätsoper. Die Fledermaus is playing at the Volksoper.
At 7PM, Gather at the Wandl Hotel prior to our departure. We will proceed to the Shottentor UBahn/tram stop near the University (about a 15 minute walk), and from there, take tram 38 with her to
Grinzing to visit the Mayer am Pfarrplatz heuriger for refreshments (wine!) and dinner (individual
ordering). We will need to have our own tram tickets or "weekly travel pass" for the ride out and back.
September 7
During the day, independent touring, etc. At 11Am, the Spanish Riding School Lipizzaners will perform
at their Michaelerplatz Auditorium.
7PM, Gather at the historic Palais Pallavicini on Josefsplatz 5 for our Farewell Dinner. This will slightly
more "upscale" affair, so jackets and tie (no suits) would be a good idea for men and comparable dress
for women. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served prior to our 4-course dinner. 131 Euros p/p

10:30 a.m. Sightseeing cruise on the Danube.
The boat departs promptly at 10:30 a.m. from Schiffstation Wien, located along the Danube Canal at
Schwedenplatz. It’s less than a 10-minute walk from Stefansplatz to the ticket office, which looks like a
big white boat tied to the canal at Schwedenplatz. Walk down the ramp to the ticket office. Please arrive
at least 15 minutes in advance in order to buy your ticket, 27 Euros per person. This is a circular tour
that will bring us back to Schwedenplatz at 1:50 p.m. There is a restaurant on the boat for lunch.
5:00 p.m. Dinner at Bastei Beisl, Stubenbastei 10 at corner of Jakobergasse.
We have scheduled this evening meal early so you can have the later evening free for the opera, a
concert or enjoying quality time with your fellow IES alumni. The venue is a typical Viennese inn with
delicious and hearty local food, beer and wine, not to be missed. The address, Stubenbastei 10, is less
than a 10-minute walk from Stefansplatz near Schulerstraße.
Saturday, October 26
10:30 a.m. Walking tour inside the Ring, starting at Neuer Markt.
Stroll along memory lane with IES Wien alumnus (2004) and tour guide Gretl Satorius. Gretl will guide us
from Neuer Markt, site of the IES office when we were students, to all our favorite IES haunts inside the
Ring with stops at historical monuments and landmarks. The stroll will end with lunch at a favorite
restaurant.
5:00 p.m. Evening at Der Rudolfshof, a wonderful Heuringen at Cobenzlgasse 8 in Grinzing.
Der Rudlfshof is the yellow building located less than a block to the left when you get off tram #38 at the
Grinzing stop (not the Grinzingstrasse stop). Take bus #1A from Stefansplatz to Schottentor to board
tram #38 in the direction of Leopoldsberg/Kahlenberg. Or, take the U-4 U-Bahn to Heiligenstadt and
board tram #38 there. When you get to Der Rudolfshof walk through the opening to the restaurant door
in the courtyard. This is one of the most appealing wine restaurants in Grinzing. Inside, portraits of
Kronprinz Rudolf decorate a setting that evokes an old-fashioned hunting lodge. The proprietor, his wife
and his staff are awaiting us with live music. We have scheduled this event early so you can have the
later evening free for the opera, a concert or stay to enjoy the Grinzing ambience.
Sunday, October 27
10:30 a.m. Haydn’s Theresienmesse with choir & orchestra, Jesuitkirchen, Dr.-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz.
Located down Bäckerstraße less than a 10-minute walk from Stefansplatz, this magnificent Rococo
church stands just in front of the great hall of the old University of Vienna, where Haydn’s oratorio The
Creation and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony had their premiers. The music at this free service rivals a
performance by the Vienna Symphony orchestra and chorus. Be sure to arrive early to get a seat, no
later than 10:15 p.m. for sure and even earlier if possible.
