What the MIS progression decisions report shows
The Management Information System (MIS) progression decisions report (sample below) should be used where the
full breakdown of progression decisions requires analysis, particularly where progression has been highlighted as
an area of interest in the programme dataset report. The report also facilitates a detailed comparison of all
programmes alongside one another. Summaries of this data feature on the progression section of the programme
dataset (ie progression and retention indicators – see columns no. 15 and 16 below). See separate guidance which
outlines how programme level performance reviews should be conducted.
The report shows progression decisions of undergraduate and postgraduate students, from one year of their
programme to the next through to completion. It covers programmes delivered at all levels, studied in full-time
mode (includes previously full-time and distance learning). Data is extracted early October to show the end of
session ie including the reassessment period. Please note: reference is made to the old levels of study (ie 1, 2, 3) –
these are to be translated into the revised National Qualifications Framework (NQF) levels (ie 4, 5, 6) until this is
amended. Part-time students are not currently included as overall ‘progression’ rates are skewed when reporting
part-time patterns of study that do not follow that of full-time students. The Department of Academic Quality are
seeking to enhance the reports available to better suit provision that does not follow the standard full-time
undergraduate framework.
All staff can access this data through the staff portal: ‘systems’ tab | Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) | ‘DAQ MIS
reports’ tab – no account is required to log-on. Full details on all the reports available and how to produce relevant
data can be found on the Department of Academic Quality (DAQ) website: dmu.ac.uk/data. Please contact Suzanne
Nelson, Quality Officer (Performance Analysis) on x8310 or email: [email protected] with any queries.
The numbered columns on the sample report below map directly to the corresponding numbered rows on the
subsequent explanatory table. These should be used alongside one another for clarification on what the report
shows, how the data is calculated and what it includes/excludes.

Exceptionally, the number of enrolled students can be less
than the total number of students as they may appear in
more than one progression category. This occurs where a
student has interrupted or transferred, yet has been given a
PAB code at the assessment board.

before 1st December for reasons other than academic failure
or internal transfer.
