SampleStore II: Flexible, Modular, Automated Sample Storage
ASK BROOKS
Over 200 stores and more than a billion samples managed worldwide.
Our focus is sample management – we are the experts
With more than 16 years of experience and over 200
automated stores installed worldwide, Brooks understands
sample management. Brooks delivered the world’s first
automated -20°C storage system in 1997, and is the
storage partner of choice for researchers around the world,
including 9 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies, with
reliable, flexible automated storage solutions.
SampleStore II is one of the results of $multi-million
investment to develop industry leading Sample
Management tools.
managing a large scale collection of millions of samples
held in many locations. The Brooks team has experience
of a wide range of applications; from managing of
compound samples for drug research through to samples
of DNA, serum, and tissue for biorepositories, as well
as the particular challenges of viable cell storage. We
can provide guidance on sample collection, preparation,
storage, output and distribution as well as storage
containers and sample quality.

Flexibility in a changing world
You have plans to invest in a new automated sample
storage system. You will be planning on that system having
many years of useful life. However, the one thing that you
are certain of, is that the future is full of uncertainty!
SampleStore II has been specifically designed for an
unpredictable world:
• Dynamically allocated storage space whenever
samples are loaded: no need to predefine the mix of
sample containers
• Sample picking modules are designed for a wide range
of container sizes
• When you have new container types to store, then
new sample picking modules and storage trays can be
easily added or old ones replaced: SampleStore II has
6 module bays as standard; typically one is required for
input/output, leaving up to 5 available for sample picking
Brooks’ Multi-format storage
• Increase throughput by adding further sample
picking modules
• Increase storage capacity seamlessly linked by an
‘internal bridge.’

Brooks’ SampleStore II has been designed for reliability
from the start. Based on almost 20 years’ experience, a
global install base and experience that spans from room
temperature to -80°C and below; Brooks’ stores range
from some of the largest to the smallest in the world:
• Samples are inspected on input, both height detection
and imaging: errors on sample input can be the greatest
cause of failures
• Data capture and logging, Strata™ intelligent diagnostics
allow Brooks to quickly diagnose any problems and to
take reliability to a new level.
•Intuitive user interface, on the store itself and on
the store control software: minimizing the risk of
human error.
• Standard sub systems with proven reliability and
performance: our modular approach gives both flexibility

Standard solutions provide great benefits to users.
Standardization brings the reliability of designs that have
been proven in many different laboratories, that can be
delivered in a known time frame and provide confidence
in the promised performance.
SampleStore II brings the benefits of standardization to
automated sample storage. The SampleStore II modular
architecture is based on Brooks’ depth of experience in
producing a wide variety of automated storage systems.
The vast majority of automated storage requirements
can be met by standard SampleStore II modules:
• Capacities from 300,000 to over 10,000,000 samples
(based on 96-way tubes)
Brooks SampleStore II Modules
• Lengths from 2.1m to 20m (7’ to 66’)
• Heights from 2.6m to 4.5m (8’ to 15’)
• Picking almost any container, including: standard
SBS 96-way tubes, SBS format micro plates,
REMP microtubes, glass vials and cryovials
• Throughputs up to 100,000+ samples per day
• Storage environments from +20°C to -20°C and
including low humidity and inert gas
SampleStore II has the same architecture as our -80°C
automated storage system ‘Biostore II’. This brings
greater benefits of standardization. For example, a
typical biorepository will store DNA at +4°C or -20°C
and blood serum at -80°C; SampleStore II and BioStore II
can be used in these two applications and have common
user interfaces as well as sharing common modules
and subsystems, simplifying user training and support.

Native REMP tube punching with the RTT Selector Module; the same module
can pick STBR384, STBR96-300 and STBR96-900 tubes
SAMPLESTORE II AND ITS SOFTWARE IS EASY AND CONVENIENT
TO USE: No special engineering expertise is required to operate the system
Using SampleStore II becomes completely intuitive with
Brooks’ Strata store control software. The simplified user
interface can be easily configured for day to day operation
with more detail available via drill down and advanced
screens for ‘super users’. Strata can be used next to the
store, remotely from a users Office or even from home;
Strata will operate on a PC and mobile devices, such as an
iPad. Strata simplifies integration with Corporate IT systems
and LIMS supporting Web Services and other technologies.
Strata ensures reliable performance via intelligent
diagnostics and error recovery.
