“Blast Off or
Blow Up”
Based on Life on the Edge
Dr. James Dobson’s book for 16- to 26year-olds
Some of the most dramatic and permanent
changes in life usually occur between the
ages of 16 and 26.
Most of the decisions you make during this 10year period will shape the next 50 years your
life — including the choice of an occupation,
decision to marry, and establishing your
values and personality

“Blast Off or
Blow Up”
Based on Life on the
Edge
Dr. James Dobson’s
book for 16- to 26year-olds
As a bricklayer knows, establishing a solid
foundation is critical. The same is true in life.
As you face the hundreds of important
questions these ten years hold, it would be
helpful to talk with someone that has answers.

One of the most important decisions
you’ll make in the next few years will
focus on your choice of work/career.
How can you know what you’ll want to
be doing when you’re 40, 50 or 60
years old?
HEI - Holistic Education Institute

To make an informed decision about a
profession, you’ll need these six essentials:
1. It must be something you genuinely like to
do
2. It must be something you have the ability
to do
3. It must be something you can earn a living
by doing it

8
To make an informed decision about a
profession, you’ll need these six essentials:
4. It must be something that are permitted to
do
5. It must be something that brings spiritual
and cultural enrichment and affirmation
6. It must be something that God wants you
to do

9
What makes it so tough to choose an
occupation is that all of these
requirements must be met at the same
time.

10
Understandably, many young people
flounder in the face of this decision and
become immobilized.
Such young adults are like the space shuttle
on the launch pad: lots of potential, but they
don’t get off the ground.

A contractor would never build a skyscraper
without detailed plans to guide his work.

12
What plans are you using as you try
to figure out who you are and what
you want out of life?
1. How much time are you
spending in prayer, seeking
the Lord’s will?
2. What are your goals?

3. What are God’s plans for you?
How can you know God’s will?
What does the Bible say about
knowing God’s will?

4. What are you doing in high
school to be ready to act on
God’s plan for your life?
Studying?
Studying hard?
Hardly studying?

Activities?
Working?

How do you know what your calling
is?
The first step could be determining
what you’re good at.
Consider taking some

How do you know what your calling
is?
Educate yourself by doing some
career research …
Or talk with adults who are working
at a career that’s of interest to you.

Career Research
HEI - Holistic Education Institute
25
Choosing a career today is
sometimes challenging or even
downright difficult.
There are so many
options!
How do you know which way to go?
HEI - Holistic Education Institute
26
Choosing a career today is
challenging, and it’s very
different from when your
grandparents were first
starting out.
You’re not signing on for a 40
or 50-year commitment.

27
Back in their day, changing jobs
was a red flag for the employer.
Today, employers are more apt to
look at someone who has had
several jobs as “more
experienced.”

28
Reminder
There are plenty of bad
choices out there. One bad
choice could mean a life full
of regrets, pain and sorrow.
The bad turn-ons
and temptations
are numerous …
constant and …
ubiquitous

Whether or not you’re thinking
about your future, here are some
words to consider from Pastor
Craig Hill:
Seek first His kingdom, then the
byproducts will come.
If you follow your vocation, God
will provide everything you
need: food, drink, clothes,
housing, transportation, etc.
Pastor Craig Hill’s series on “What Jesus Says about Anxiety”: July 19, 2009

Words to consider from Pastor Gary:
If you’re running from God, you’ll
never get where you’re going…and
it will cost you.
Gary Stubblefield’s Series on Jonah: Lesson 2 September 6, 2009
But if you’re walking with God,
you’ll always get where you’re
going…and God will pick up the
tab
.
Gary Stubblefield’s Series on Jonah: Lesson 2 September 6, 2009

More words to consider from Pastor
Craig:
One of the very first things God
asks of Adam is to work (Gen. 1:28;
2:15) and to do so with purpose.
Pastor Craig Hill’s series on "What Does it Mean to be Human?" : October 4, 2009

32
Working with purpose or calling
is what we call Vocation.
Vocation can be more than simply
career or job.
Career and job earn money, but
vocation benefits
community/society and fulfills
personally.
HEI - Holistic Education Institute
33
What do you think God has
particularly called you to do?
Or to put it another way, what
do you perceive as your own
particular vocation in God‘s
kingdom?
HEI - Holistic Education Institute
34
Conclusion
You must believe that God has a plan
for you:
1. For the school you will attend after
high school
2. For the career/job He has for you
3. For your future spouse
4. For your future family
5. For everything
HEI - Holistic Education Institute
35
Conclusion
You just have to make sure you’re
spending enough time in God’s Word,
listening to Him, and waiting for His
timing.
HEI - Holistic Education Institute
36
Trust in the Lord with all of your heart
and lean not on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him and He
will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3: 4-5
But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness and all these things will be
given to you as well. Matthew 6: 33
What does God want YOU to do in
His kingdom?
