Designed to deliver an unmatched level of
confidence, trust, and prestige, cast bronze
and aluminum desk and door nameplates from
Matthews can be created with any of our standard
letter styles or using a custom supplied font. Desk and door nameplates
can also include a company logo or other emblem (to be produced from camera-ready artwork).
Desk and door nameplate options include the following:
• D
esk Nameplates: Cast bronze or aluminum nameplates are
mounted on a triangular walnut woodmount. Woodmount-style
desk nameplates are available in a variety of sizes.
• Door Plaques: Cast bronze or aluminum nameplates are
mounted directly onto an office door. Door nameplates
are available in a variety of styles.
Ideal for large corporations, small businesses, government and
military, healthcare providers, schools and colleges, and many other organizations,
Matthews desk and door nameplates add an unmistakable air of distinction to any atmosphere.
A cast plaque with name listings is the ideal way to recognize and honor a list
of individuals or groups. A plaque containing a list of names, such as an honor
roll or contributor recognition plaque, includes an integrally cast headline
stating the purpose of the plaque, followed by the name listings.
Name lists can be produced in three ways. If the list of names is finalized with no
need to add future names, Matthews will cast the list of names on the background
of the plaque. If names need to be removable, cast removable nameplates are
a good option. Each name is cast on a separate removable nameplate that is
screwed into the master plaque.
If several names are to be added at
one time, raised scored panels are
a good choice. Names are cast on a
grooved background plate intended
to simulate individual nameplates.
10
Images can be incorporated onto cast plaques using a variety of techniques.
The best method for your cast plaque project depends on many factors,
including your artwork, your desired final appearance, your installation
location, and your budget. All images require a photograph or
artwork of the subject.
Imag eC as t™
ImageCast™ is a patented process that combines the beauty of cast
bronze with the detailed look of a photograph. Uniquely personalized,
ImageCast plaques are ideal for signage, historical markers, or any
application that needs to tell a pictorial story. Shown on Page 8.
Bas- Relief Images
The premium choice for recognizing a donor, contributor, or other
notable person, a bas-relief portrait involves Matthews’ sculptors modeling
a three-dimensional, low-relief clay sculpture of the subject. Once you
approve the clay sculpture, a sand mold is made and a cast metal version
is produced. The cast bas-relief is then hand-finished and attached to
the plaque background.
Bas-relief images are suitable for both interior and exterior applications.
Et c hed I mag es
The etching process reproduces halftone photographs
with fine detail through acid etching onto metal sheet.
Etched images are recommended for interior use
(deep-etched line drawings may be used outdoors).
Flat-Relief Images
An economical alternative to bas-relief, flat-relief images
begin with a black and white rendering of the subject.
Flat-relief images are suitable for both interior and exterior applications.
Cameo Ima ges
Cameos use a standard-sized ceramic or steel blank as their base material.
A photograph is scanned at high resolution and is reproduced and applied to the blank.
A clear glaze is applied over the transfer, and the cameo is fired in a kiln. The resulting
product is an exact reproduction of the photograph on a ceramic or steel base.
Cameo images are suitable for both interior and exterior applications.
Me talp h oto™ I ma ges
Metalphoto™ uses a photosensitive aluminum sheet (natural or gold-tone) that is exposed
using a film negative made from a photograph. The image is produced as a permanent black
image on the plate. Metalphoto is ideal when a photograph is extremely detailed or the image
does not have a lot of contrast.
Metalphoto images are suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Random-Orbital
(Bronze or Aluminum)
Natural metal color with
multidirectional brushed lines, achieved
with a random-orbital sander. Ideal surface
for plaques mounted in a sidewalk or other
walkway subject to pedestrian traffic.
Polished Finish
Natural metal color buffed to a
high luster, obtained by polishing
with successively higher abrasives, then
buffing with a fine buffing compound.
Chrome-Plated Bronze
Raised surfaces of the bronze
plaque are polished to meet
polished bronze specifications. The
background of the plaque is kept in its
“natural sandblast” state, providing
contrast with the polished raised surface.
P r o tec t i ve Co ati ng s
Matthews recommends that bronze plaques have a protective coating applied.
• Diamond Shield® Protective Coating: Available exclusively from Matthews,
this clear coat is factory-applied only. With a higher gloss than our clear
protective lacquer, Diamond Shield® provides maximum durability in harsh
exterior environments where plaques are exposed to salt, pollution, and weather.
Diamond Shield is most popular for exterior applications.
• M
atthews Clear Protective Lacquer: Providing a low-gloss appearance, this clear coating
was developed by Matthews to inhibit oxidizing. Ideal when matching older plaques or when
a lower-gloss look is desired. Clear Protective Lacquer is most popular for interior applications.

Stud Mount
This method is recommended for concealed mounting on
brick or masonry walls. The plaque is drilled and tapped
to accept a threaded stud.
Ro set t es & Togg le Bo lts
Toggle bolts (threaded machine screws with spring-loaded butterflies)
work well with hollow tile, cement block, or drywall surfaces.
Holes are drilled through the face of the plaque for toggle bolts.
Rosettes which cover the machine screws are optional.
Rose ttes , Mac hine Screws
& Ex pan sion S lee v es
Machine screws and expansion sleeves work well with brick, stone,
or masonry walls. Holes are drilled through the face of the plaque for
machine screws. Each metal expansion sleeve (lead anchor) has a
threaded interior that accepts a machine screw. Rosettes are optional.
T hrough-th e-Face Mount
If requested, cast plaques can be provided with holes
through the face for mechanical fasteners. Mounting
hardware can also be provided on request.

ADA-Complia n t Le tt er in g
ADA-compliant etched Braille, Raster Braille, and tactile lettering is
available. Zinc is the ideal choice for ADA signage, with easy etching
to almost any depth and unparalleled line detail.
A cost-effective ADA option, zinc can be used
for both interior and exterior applications.
The industry’s highest-quality finishes provide Matthews etched plaques with
an incomparable air of beauty, sophistication, and prestige. Choose the finish
that best matches your stylistic goals and visual intent.
Raised Ar ea F inishes
Satin
Used primarily in interior applications, a satin finish will reveal the metal’s natural
color with subtle horizontal or vertical grain lines.
Polished
Used to remove oxidation and create a reflective surface, polished metals are buffed to a
high luster and then coated with lacquer to prevent further oxidation.
Fully Painted
For fully painted metal signage, zinc is the recommended choice.
Raised areas may be painted with any of Matthews’ standard colors
(custom colors also available). Multiple colors may be used on the
same plaque as long as the colors are separated by a recessed area.
Random-Orbital
This multidirectional finish is typically used in high-traffic areas
as it is ideally suited to hide fingerprints and smudges and requires
minimal cleaning.
Oxidized
A natural finish produced by forcing the oxidation of the metal; primarily used with
brass and bronze alloys. A range of oxidized finishes can be achieved and are specified
as light, medium, and dark. It is important to note that an oxidized finish should not be
used if a consistent color is needed, as each oxidized plaque is a work of art and has its
own unique character and color variations.
Faux Metallic Finishes
Used as an alternative to true metal compositions, etched zinc is typically used as the base
metal and all raised areas are tinted to achieve the look of stainless steel, copper, bronze,
brass, or silvertone.
18

Painted Colors
The recessed areas of all Matthews etched plaques may be painted with any standard color (custom colors also available).
Multiple colors may be used on the same plaque, as long as the colors are separated by a raised area.
Texture Paint
When a textured background is required, a variety of textured paints are
available for recessed background areas on all available metal plaques.
E dge F inish es
Standard finish on square and bevel edges is satin. Optional finishes
include polished, painted, and sandblast.
C lea r Co at in gs
Protective clear coatings are used on all metals except stainless steel and polished aluminum.
Clear coatings are available in gloss, semigloss, or flat lacquer. For exterior applications a high
gloss is recommended, and for interior applications a semigloss is recommended.

19
Grap hics
Ideal for fine detail and small lettering, etched plaques
are created with two levels of graphics—recessed and raised.
The depth achieved is dependent on the letter styles and
artwork as well as plaque size:
• Standard etching depths may range from .007"
to .032" depending on size and detail of
artwork and metal being used
• Halftone photographs have a shallow etching
depth of .003" to .007"
• ADA-compliant deep etching is .032" and can be utilized
in all metals except aluminum
Recessed Graphics
Graphics and text on etched plaques are generally recessed and infilled with a painted color.
Brass alloys can be oxidized, with the recessed areas appearing as a darker color.
Raised Graphics
When raised graphics are utilized, the plaque background is painted or oxidized. Small lettering
with fine serifs is not recommended for raised graphics.
Stencil-Cut Graphics
Letters and artwork may be pierced or stencil-cut via waterjet cutting through the
metal plate. Stencil-cut graphics are ideal for signage that combines dissimilar
metals, requires backlighting, or exposes the installation wall.
Shapes
Square or rectangular etched plaques are standard. In addition to squares and
rectangles, plaques can be machined and/or cut into a variety of custom shapes
to match any design environment.
Bor der s
A variety of decorative standard and custom borders
are available. For complete selection, see Page 12.

Square Edge
Standard edge treatment is a 90° square edge.
Bevel Edge
Optional 45° machine bevel
edge is applied to one half
of the material thickness.
20

Standard square 90° corners.
Radius Corners
A variety of radius corners are available.
A true start-to-finish partner, Matthews offers an array of etched plaque mounting methods:
Double -Faced Tape
Double-faced tape is provided on request. Due to the variations in adhesives
and wall surfaces, as well as the weight of etched plaques, testing is
recommended before utilizing double-faced tape. Recommended
for lighter-weight plaques mounted on smooth surfaces.
Stud Mount
Threaded studs are recommended for concealed mounting to solid walls.
Bonding cement or silicone adhesive secures the studs within the drilled holes.
If your plaque is 1/4" or thicker, the back of the plaque is drilled and tapped.
If your plaque is less than 1/4", studs are spot-welded on the back of the plaque.
(Studs are not recommended for plaques less than 1/16" thick.)
S ilic o ne Mount
Provided on request, silicone adhesive is an effective mounting method for etched plaques.
Silicone mounting is most effective when combined with double-faced tape.
Th rough-th e-Face mo unt
If requested, etched plaques can be provided with holes through the face for
mechanical fasteners. Mounting hardware can also be provided on request.

With an air of elegance unlike any other signage product, cast
letters from Matthews are the result of decades of experience
coupled with state-of-the-art technology.
Cast letters are made by pouring molten metal into sand
molds, a process that results in a highly durable, highly
distinctive way to project your image. Cast letters can be
produced in many standard letter styles or the custom letter
style of your choice (with supplied digital artwork). Cast letters
are a great economic alternative when multiple sets of the same
text are required. ImageCast™ (Page 8) letters are also available.

Prismatic Letters
In addition to flat-face letters, many cast letter styles can be converted to
a prismatic face through CAD equipment or hand-carving. Custom letters
are also available in some letter styles. A variety of shapes and textures
can also be applied to cast letter faces.
Prismatic letters may not be appropriate for all letter styles and are not
recommended for letter sizes under 2" in height.

The ultimate in precision and detail, waterjet-cut
letters from Matthews deliver an outstanding
level of quality, prestige, and durability—
a level you could only expect from Matthews.
Waterjet-cut letters are available in a variety of
materials and thicknesses.
With sharp inside corners and more precise details
than router-cut letters, waterjet-cut letters are ideal for
joined letters and script letter styles. Other
waterjet-cutting applications include logos
that require the precision joining of different
materials or instrument and control panels
with stencil-cut shapes and pierced holes.

3/8 Matthews offers an array of brilliant finishes that
bring out the full beauty of our cast and waterjet-cut letters.
Cast and waterjet-cut letter edges have a fine sandblasted finish.

Satin
Natural metal color with a brushed satin surface. Cast letters 3" and smaller have vertical
grain lines. Cast letters 4" and above have horizontal grain lines. Waterjet-cut letters will have
a horizontal satin finish unless specified otherwise.

Polished
Aluminum is buffed to a high luster and then coated with lacquer. Available on cast letters
2" and smaller and on all waterjet-cut letters.
Painted (Cast Aluminum)
Faces of cast aluminum letters are sanded to a fine satin
finish. The entire letter is then painted to obtain a
durable finish. A wide variety of standard colors
are available; an infinite number of custom
colors can be specified at an additional cost.

Oxidized
A natural finish available on cast bronze and waterjet-cut bronze, brass, and
muntz metal. Faces of waterjet-cut letters are brushed to a satin finish, while
cast bronze letters are sandblasted to a fine matte finish. Variations in color
from piece to piece can occur since this process depends largely upon natural
oxidation. Colors will vary from a rich golden hue to
almost black (specify light, medium, or dark).
Light Oxidized Bronze
Chrome-Plated
Available on cast bronze only. Letters are finished
to the same specifications as polished bronze.
Two layers of plating are then applied. The
resulting finish is almost mirror-like.

1" to less than 3" are provided flat-backed for adhesive mounting,
but can be drilled and tapped. Standard brass and aluminum stud
lengths are 2-1/2" and 3".
Waterjet-cut letters 1/4" or thicker are drilled and tapped for threaded
studs. For materials less than 1/4" thick, studs are spot-welded on
the back. Studs are not used on material thickness of 1/16" or less.
Standard welded stud length is 1-1/2".

The perfect solution for uneven wall faces such as split-face
rock or corrugated metal wall surfaces. Letters are projected away
from the wall with aluminum spacers. Spacers help to level the
front surfaces of letters and restrict dirt, water, and ice from
accumulating behind the letters. Standard spacer lengths are
1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", and 1".

on Back Bar
Letters are pre-mounted in the factory to an aluminum bar. Back bars
are effective on an irregular surface, such as the corrugated steel fascia
on prefabricated metal buildings. Bars are generally painted to match
the background of the mounting surface. Machine screws or sheet metal
screws secure back bars to the wall. Letters under 6" use a single-bar
mount, while larger letters require a double-bar mount.

Way-Finding Signage
Based on unique technology, Matthews color signage opens the pores
of anodized aluminum, then “roughens the walls” of these pores to
enable dyes to be printed into, not onto, the anodic layer. An advanced
thermo-chemical sealing process then locks in the dye, creating
remarkable image clarity—and unmatched durability. Images can be
created from photographs, artwork, or any other illustration source.
L imi ted only by the imag in ati on
Ideal for a variety of promotional, recognition, commemoration, and way-finding applications,
Matthews color signage is the ultimate combination of high-resolution imagery
and unsurpassed durability. Limited only by the imagination, color signage
can take your next signage project to unprecedented levels.
• Cutting-edge technology embeds high-resolution
four-color images into anodized aluminum
• Anodized aluminum is 60 times harder than
standard aluminum, providing greater
resistance to sun, rain, sand, snow, heat,
saltwater, wind, vandalism, and graffiti
• Unsurpassed image quality
• Scratch- and abrasion-resistant
• Will not chip, crack, or peel
Maximum Print Area: 48" x 36". Larger sizes available by tiling panels together.
Thicknesses: 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm. Larger thicknesses available by laminating
to selected backing plates (aluminum, acrylic, glass, stainless steel, etc.).
Image Resolution: 400 dpi.
Print Options: 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, or 5-spot color line art or halftone images. Four-color process
with photographic image reproduction also available.
Corner Radius: 1/16" to 2". Larger radius available by request.
Mounting Holes: Suitable for all applications.
Backing Adhesive: Optional high-bond, double-sided lamination film can be
applied to the rear of panels for easy installation to clean rigid surfaces.
Waterjet-Cut Shapes: High-speed waterjet is used to create
cutouts for faceplates, control panels, and shapes other than
those with straight edges.
