2013 Transfer Student Orientation Sample Schedule 16-59 Credits Instagram/Twitter- @scsuStudentLife 8:00AM – 9:00AM ASC (Adanti Student Center) 1st Floor 9:00AM– 9:45AM Lyman Center Orientation Registration & Continental Breakfast Lift Off: Welcome to SCSU #scsuNSO2013 We are excited that you are joining us for the first step in your SCSU journey. Please sign in, grab a bite to eat, and mingle with staff and other students. Students who will be living on-campus in the Fall can visit the Office of Residence Life in ASC 201 to receive their fall housing assignments! You will have your first opportunity to take your Hoot Loot ID picture in the ASC Recreation Room. The Health Center, Athletics Department (for NCAA athletes), Financial Aid Office and Bursar’s Office will also be available. In this opening session, members of the university’s executive cabinet will welcome students and families, followed by a special presentation by the outstanding orientation staff. All groups will be led by Orientation Ambassadors, or “OA.s” These energetic and knowledgeable 10:00AM – 10:30AM Varies 10:30AM – 11:15AM Varies Connection Session: student leaders will guide you through small group activities and interactive sessions, which have been An Orientation Snapshot designed to help you process important information. These “connection sessions” will be based on the programs and workshops held throughout the session. To begin, OAs will facilitate an important conversation on some of the expectations you should have of your orientation experience and what Southern expects from you during this program. Learning Your Academic This session will focus on the academic program you will follow throughout your academic journey at Southern. Program You are invited to browse the Resource Fair in the ASC Ballroom. Representatives of university offices will provide informational materials about programs and services and answer your questions. After you browse the Resource Fair, enjoy lunch with new friends. If you have not taken your Hoot Loot ID picture, you have an opportunity to do so during this time. 11:15AM– 12:00PM Outside the ASC Theater Lunch & Resource Fair 12:00PM– 12:45PM Varies Success Sessions: Part 1 Students will have the opportunity to choose from several breakout sessions to learn about an area they find interesting. Session options include health and wellness, financial responsibility and academic success plus more! 12:45PM– 1:30PM Varies Business Time This time has been set aside to explore campus on your own. If you would like assistance in finding a particular office, would like a guided tour of campus or would like to learn more about SCSU technology, please visit the Club and Organization Resource Room located in ASC 217. Lastly, if you have yet to take your Hoot Loot ID picture, you can do so at the Hoot Loot Office located in the Wintergreen Building. 1:30PM – 2:00PM Varies Connection Session: Owl Wisdom The groups will take some time to process the information at the resource fair and frame the rest of the day. 2:00PM– 2:45PM Varies Success Sessions: Part 2 Students will have the opportunity to choose from several breakout sessions to learn about an area they find interesting. Session options include general student involvement, fraternity and sorority Life and student governance plus more! 3:00PM– 5:00PM Varies Academic Advisement Meet with academic advisers to select and register for your Fall 2013 courses. This is the final required portion of the schedule, but ALL transfer students are invited to attend the and Course Registration remaining activities and programs. 5:00PM– 5:45PM ASC 301 Home Sweet Home For students living on campus in the Fall (Optional and by RSVP) If you are living on campus in the Fall, you will have the opportunity to meet with a member of the Residence Life staff and visit a Residence Hall. 5:45PM – 6:30PM ASC Main Dining Area Dinner (Optional and by RSVP) Eat, enjoy, relax, and spend some time with your fellow owls! 7:00PM – 8:00PM Engleman C112 First Semester (Optional and by RSVP) This live action show will provide an inside look at what your first semester will look like. Grab a seat and get ready because you’re not going to want to miss a second of this! 8:00PM – 8:45PM Varies Connection Session: Day 1 That’s a Wrap! (Optional and by RSVP) Orientation Ambassadors will facilitate a debriefing session to reflect on the lessons from “First Week” and answer any questions from your first day. 9:00PM – 11:00PM West Campus Quad Live In the Sky! A fun-filled and spirited night. (Optional and by RSVP) Student leaders will host a night of fun and entertainment. Socialize, relax, and have fun! Welcome Weekend– optional for transfer students. August 25th, 9am-7pm, August 26th, 9am– 7pm and August 27th, 9am-5pm Students living on campus may move in on Saturday, August 24th. Sunday, August 25th and Monday, August 26th are additional orientation days for all transfer students – Transfer students are invited to return to campus on Saturday, August 25th (9am-7pm) and Sunday, August 26th (9am– 7pm) for New Student Welcome Weekend. Programs, workshops, and activities are designed to further educate new students on critical topics and to ensure that they are prepared to enter their first semester at Southern. TRANSFERmation- On Monday, August 27th, the Transfer Student Faculty Mentors from each department and program at Southern will be meeting with incoming transfer students at an event called TRANSFERmation, to welcome you to campus and provide you with specific information about your chosen major and degree.
