Old Letters,
Precious Memories
Julie Crim, Volunteer
I
was cleaning out storage boxes
recently and came across old
family letters. I read through
them and the memories flooded
back.
I found a precious letter from
my maternal grandmother to my
grandfather about my parent’s
wedding. My grandfather was at sea
at the time. He was the captain of a
ship and the letter was sent to the
ship’s chandlery in Charleston, SC
– That was in 1922.
I read letters long forgotten from
aunts, uncles and cousins. Some
were funny, some were sad, but
the letters brought my family close
again.
This made me realize in this day
of email, cell phones and text
messages, we should still take the
time to write notes and letters to
our loved ones. Getting a card or
letter in the mail is still special. The
writer took time to send it. Maybe
it’s a card they found just for you.
These make memories. They are
tangible evidence in your hand
that someone was thinking of you
and cares for you.
Become a
Hospice of Yuma
Volunteer
The messages that come in the mail
can be happy or sad, tell of birthdays,
deaths, weddings, graduations and
congratulations. They may say “I
love you,” “I’m sorry,” “Forgive me”
or “I forgive you.” Whatever the
words are they are important to the
one who writes them and the one
who receives them.
I know our lives seem so busy and
writing to someone may not seem
so important and email is faster but
don’t let this art slip away.
I am putting all my old letters into a
book to pass on to my grandchildren.
It is as though I am the guardian of
these for now. I will tell them about
each one and will pass the family
memories on so they will not fade
away.
Hand written letters and notes
preserve memories. After finding
these old letters, I now take the
time to write a note or letter in each
card I send no matter the occasion.
It may be just a short note but
I’m hoping this will continue in
the future. Years from
now, I hope my
family will read
these and the
memories
will go on.

Every Little Bit Helps
O
f all the patients that
Hospice of Yuma cares
for in a given year those
without insurance or ability
to pay are closest to my heart.
Imagine for a moment that you
are in a circumstance where
you or your spouse loses a job.
What would you do? To add
to the financial problems you
have just been diagnosed with
cancer and need chemotherapy.
You cannot afford to pay for
COBRA to keep your insurance
and the oncologist cannot
treat you for free. You try for
assistance through the State
but are denied because you
do not meet the eligibility
criteria.
Without treatment
your cancer grows rapidly
and you experience a great
amount of pain and nausea.
You frequent the emergency
room every few days because
it’s the only option you have to
receive medical care and pain
medication.
community who are dying
with a terminal illness and
have no insurance or financial
resources to assist them.
I
cannot begin to overstate the
importance of the Hospice of
Yuma Charitable Care Program
and to ask for your continued
support. Hospice of Yuma is
currently 8 months into its
fiscal year and to date we have
provided charitable care to
21 patients for a total of 725
days of care. The cost of this
care totals over $115,000. The
only way that this is possible
is through the generosity and
financial support we receive
from donors in the community.

Get Up, Survive, Go To Bed
Gay Anderson
G
et up, survive, go to
bed you say. What
does
that
possibly
mean? The answer can be
found with any number of
newly bereaved who have so
much to do and no idea where
to begin. Quite possibly
the beginning will be get
up, survive and go to bed.
Bereaved family members are
encouraged, if at all possible,
to take a time out following
a period of caregiving. In
many instances one is only
able to barely function as the
realization of a significant
loss sets in. The bereaved
are pulled many directions
and often find it difficult
to decision make and/or
set priorities and/or meet
the demands of end-of-life
business matters.
One author indicates
stages of grief as:
the
1. Numbness,
2. Disorganization and
3. Reorganization
Numbness
may
take
several weeks or months,
disorganization many months
and reorganization several
weeks or months. The healing
of grief may be supported in a
place of emotional and social
support system, emotional
stability, comfortable housing
and financial status, reestablishment of good eating
and
sleeping
habits,
physical
wellbeing,
and personal spiritual
sustenance.
Things To Do
Today:
1) Get Up
2) Survive
3) Go To Bed
Support may include assisting
with chores, listening to and
talking about the life of the
deceased as well as permitting
one to express their feelings.
As said, healing grief is not
immediate; it is slow and
gradual and moves through
a natural process – a time of
ending, a time of fallowness
and a time of new beginning.
This can be parallel to the
seasons – a time of fall, then
winter, then spring.
Who do you know who could
use your help? Don’t be
bashful
to
reach
out
and ‘touch’
someone.

Bequests Can Make a Difference
Alysia Munoz
To Make an Unrestricted
Bequest
H
ospice of Yuma is
fortunate
to
have
supporters over the
years that have made bequests
to our organization in their
wills. These gifts, whether
large or small, have a direct
impact on our ability to care
for the terminally ill, fund our
charitable care program and
help Hospice of Yuma to stay on
firm financial footing allowing
us to invest more services in
the community and improve
our end-of-life care.
Each year, bequests make it
possible for Hospice of Yuma to
cover the growing expenses of
care for the terminally ill. From
covering the costs of patients
without insurance to covering
the
cost
of
medications,
medical equipment, or allowing
us to increase staff to improve
our response time to patients
in crisis, bequests often make
the difference at Hospice of
Yuma between simply surviving
and moving forward with
confidence.
All bequests to Hospice of
Yuma as a charitable, notfor-profit
organization
are
fully deductible for estate tax
purposes.

HospiceMatters
A simple paragraph, added to
an existing will, is often all
that’s required. For example,
the following sentence is
usually sufficient for Hospice
of Yuma to benefit from your
bequest: “I give [dollar amount
or percentage of estate or
description of security] to
Hospice of Yuma, Yuma, AZ,
to be used for the greatest
need.” ( I n c a s e y o u r a t t o r n e y

Residual
Bequests
or
Conditional
If you wish, the residue of
your estate can be directed to
Hospice of Yuma after bequests
of specific amounts to family
members and friends. In this
case, the following language
may be sufficient: “I give
[percent] of the rest, residue
and remainder of my estate to
Hospice of Yuma, Yuma, AZ, to
be used for the greatest need.”
In addition, you may make
your bequest conditional, in
case an heir named in your will
does not survive you: “In the
event that [name of primary
July/Aug 2012
beneficiary] should not survive
me, I give, devise and bequeath
[the desired sum, property or
percentage of your estate] to
Hospice of Yuma, Yuma, AZ, to
be used for the greatest need.”
Restricted Bequests
While an unrestricted bequest
gives Hospice of Yuma the
greatest flexibility, you may
have a specific purpose for
your bequest in mind, such as
the charitable care program,
patient supplies, or a purchase
you would like to enable
Hospice of Yuma to make. We
invite you to consult with us
about specific projects and
opportunities
where
such
help would be extraordinarily
welcome.
