Role Purpose
The Research Manager will provide scientific administrative support for the clinical lead for Paediatric
Research (currently the Acting Head of the Department of Paediatrics) within Division E of the CUHT. The
Research Manager will collect and collate data on research activity, publications, prizes and student numbers
for the annual report of the Paediatric Research Working Group.
He/She will work with members of the Paediatric Research Working Group and the BRC theme leaders,
relevant NHS and University Departments to develop an outline case for a BRC Paediatrics cross cutting
theme bid 2016-2017 for funding for the period from 2017. The Research Manager will also work with
clinical leads across Division E of the CUHT management structures to ensure robust Clinical Research
governance and to encourage joint working and enhanced research output.

Publications administration

Produce Paediatric annual report – collecting together all information
(text and images) for the report. Writing and editing content, liaising with
group leaders over content, proof reading, liaising with designers and
printers. This will involve meeting with Group Leaders to explain to them
what information is required and ensuring that information is submitted in
a timely manner.
Produce departmental brochures/leaflets – collect together all
information, decide on layout, write and edit content. Liaise with
designers and printers.
Working with the HoD and the Operations Manager produce
departmental reports for the Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre.
Write articles for the Paediatrics website/newsletter for activities or news.

Departmental databases
Assess the need for central databases for holding essential information
eg publication information against the use of the University’s Symplectic
system. The post holder will be expected to assess what information is
required to be held in the databases, what reports/queries will be needed
and as a result improve the use of current databases or provide a simple
database for use by the Departments secretaries including: Paediatrics
publications database,

The Department of Paediatrics is a recognised international centre for research in child health and
development.
Currently research is focused in five main areas:
The genetics and pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications
The determinants of birth size and infant growth and how they relate to risk for adult disease
Epigenetics and mucosal immunology in paediatric intestinal health and disease
Pathophysiology of multi-organ failure in critical illness
The genetic and hormonal control of human sex development
The department also has close links with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
(Addenbrooke’s) Women’s and Children’s Division with collaborative research opportunities in a
number of paediatric sub-speciality areas including intensive care,
neurology, oncology, neonatology, gastroenterology and paediatric respiratory / allergy medicine
The Department of Paediatrics has close collaborative research links with a number of nationally
and internationally based research groups and manages approximately 9.5million pounds of
research grant funding from various government, charitable body and industry sources annually.
The Department of Paediatrics is involved in both teaching and research and has a very active
teaching programme: 160 phase 2 students (for 6 weeks each pa)
The Department of Paediatrics supports 67 members of Staff, here and in other hospitals around
the country. The Department includes 2 Professors (one vacant); 2 Clinical Honorary Consultants; 1
Senior University Lecturer; 3 University lecturers; 3 Clinical Lecturers; Clinical Research Fellows /
visitors, Project co-ordinators, Senior Research Associate, Research Associates, Research
Assistants; Research Nurses and PhD students: working with and supported by Assistant Staff
posts.

The Research Manager will be based in the Department which is embedded within Addenbrooke’s
Hospital premises and is subject to NHS and University regulations and will be a member of the
Paediatrics central administration team providing scientific administrative support to the Acting
Head of Department and Operations Manager.
The role’s particular project is to liaise with all Departments who might be involved in the Paediatric
Cross Cutting Theme bid for the next BRC funding application 2017-2022, the bid will be submitted
in 2016. Ensuring (if at all possible) a design that succeeds in being funded and coordinating the
submission of the bid, with the NHS, other organisations and University Departments.
School of Clinical Medicine
The School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge (‘the Clinical School’) is one of the
UK’s leading medical schools. There are approximately 2200 staff and 750 medical and
postgraduate students in the School. The University has recently taken the decision to expand
medical student numbers by providing places for all successful pre-medical students. Annual
research grant income is circa £110 million per annum.

1.5 To underpin the academic work of the School with excellence in administration and
support services.
Organisation of the School
The School of Clinical Medicine is headed by the Regius Professor of Physic comprises 12
Academic Departments of the University (Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Medical Genetics,
Medicine – including Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oncology, Paediatrics, Public
Health and Primary Care, Psychiatry, Radiology, Surgery, Clinical Neurosciences which map onto
service delivery within the University Hospital and undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching
requirements. The MRC Epidemiology Unit, CRUK Cambridge Institute and the MRC Cancer Unit
transferred into the Clinical School during 2013 and augment the classical Departmental structure
as research departments in their own right.
Alongside departments, the School maintains a number of cross-departmental institutes to bring
together researchers with cognate interests. At present, there are three institutes: Cambridge
Institute for Medical Research, Institute of Metabolic Sciences, and Institute of Public Health, with a
fourth planned in Cardio-Respiratory Medical Research. The Cambridge Cancer Centre, supported
by CRUK Core Award also provides cross-departmental leadership in cancer research.
The School office provides centralised professional services for the School, located on the campus,
in addition to departmentally based support.
Excellence in Partnership
The Clinical School is a member of Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP). CUHP is one of
only five Academic Health Science Centres in England recognised by the Department of Health as
internationally competitive centres of excellence in the integrated delivery of health care, health
research and the education of health professionals. CUHP is a partnership between the University
of Cambridge, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (the main acute trust for
Cambridge), Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (a specialist Cardio-Thoracic Trust) and the
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (the regional Trust responsible for Mental
Health).
The Campus is also home to the Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology (10
Nobel Prizes) and other smaller intramural units and the GlaxoSmithKline Clinical Research
Facility. Astra Zenca will be re-locating its Headquarters to the Campus in 2015-17 Together, the
partners are intending to double the size of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus by 2020.
