THE TALL SHIPS RACES 2014
ESBJERG 2.-5. AUGUST
CAPTAINS’ MANUAL
Welcome
WELCOME TO THE ENERGYMETROPOLIS OF DENMARK – ESBJERG!
During the last couple of years, Esbjerg has cemented its position as the EnergyMetropolis of Denmark; a position of which we are very proud and one we strive to maintain for many years to come.
Once Esbjerg was Denmark’s largest fishing port with a fleet of over 700 boats. Since the 1970’s,
Esbjerg has been the capital of Denmark’s offshore and energy adventure in the North Sea. What
began with oil and gas has now expanded into offshore wind energy and renewable energy.
Mayor Johnny Søtrup
Today there is only a handful of fishing boats left, and the fleet has been replaced by massive
wind turbines on the quay and huge oil rigs, which come to Esbjerg for maintenance.
We are very proud of our maritime history and what it has meant for the development of Esbjerg;
and therefore it is a great pleasure to welcome The Tall Ships Races fleet to Esbjerg.
While all the tall ships visit Esbjerg, the spectacular sight will remind us of Esbjerg’s past, but the
young trainees onboard the ships will take us back to the present while showing us the future.
We hope that The Tall Ships Races will inspire those young people to consider an education where
they acquire maritime skills, which can be used in the local offshore energy sector. Experiencing
The Tall Ships Races may be a first step towards this goal.
I hope that you will enjoy your stay in Esbjerg, and we will always be happy to see you here again.
Johnny Søtrup
Mayor

2. Arrival Arrangements
2.1NAVIGATIONAL
2.1.1GENERAL
The Port of Esbjerg is situated on the west coast of the
peninsula Jutland at position 55o28’ N and 008o26’ E.
The port of Esbjerg and the approaches are described in
various publications, i.e. “European Harbour Pilots” and
“Den danske Havnelods”.
Seacharts: Danish No. 95 Graadyb (INT 1451) and No. 61,
Nordsoen, Blaavandshuk to Fanoe.
Esbjerg is a busy port providing berths and cargo handling
facilities for the offshore oil and gas industry, off- and onshore wind energy projects, intermodal shipping and general cargo. Esbjerg is called by around 4.000 ships per year.
In addition to these 4.000 calls the ferry between Esbjerg
and the island of Fanoe calls some 15.000 times per year.
The ferries (Menja and Fenja) depart from Esbjerg (Sønderhavn) and respectively Fanoe every 20 minutes during
daytime. The ferries use VHF channel 12 and the route is
shown with red arrows on the chart below.
The port is open around-the-clock and there are no restrictions on times of arrival and departure.
Esbjerg Port Control operates around-the-clock and is
called in accordance with the communications procedures
described in this handbook.
In order to coordinate the movements of the Tall Ships Races fleet, all participants can expect close guidance during
transit through the fairway.
There are no local weather phenomena which make arrival
or departure inadvisable during certain times.
Time is always referred to as local time (UTC + 2 hours).
Speed in the harbour basins must always be slow.
Mean density of the water in the port is 1,020.
2.1.2 ETA-MESSAGE AND PILOTAGE
ETA-message to Esbjerg Port Control must be sent on
VHF channel 12 no later than 1 hour before entering the
Graadyb fairway.
A request for a pilot must be sent to DanPilot 18 hours in
advance with confirmation 12, 6 and 2 hours before the
ship is in place at the pilot station (Graadyb fairway buoy).
Please contact DanPilot via phone +45 63 25 66 67 or
e-mail [email protected].
Esbjerg Port Control can, if requested, relay messages to
DanPilot, call Esbjerg Port Control on VHF channel 12.
Use of a pilot is free of charge once inbound and once
outbound for participants in The Tall Ships Races 2014, who
have requested a pilot.
2.1.3 APPROACHES AND ANCHORAGE
Merchant ships requesting anchorages are normally directed to positions 1-2 nautical miles W-NW of the Graadyb
fairway buoy.
8
TALL SHIPS RACES 2014 ESBJERG
Ships approaching Esbjerg must call Esbjerg Port Control
on VHF channel 12 when entering Graadyb fairway. Inside
the fairway, participants in the Tall Ships Races 2014 must
switch to VHF channel 14.
2.1.5TUGS
Danish Maritime Authority Departmental Order 779 from
18th August 2000 (Navigation in certain Danish waters) is
in force with the following supplements:
The tugs must be ordered two hours in advance via Esbjerg
Port Control (VHF channel 12).
- If two approaching vessel cannot pass each other without
danger the inbound vessel must wait
- If two vessels cannot pass each other without danger the
vessel that will depart from pier shall wait with departure
until a ship sailing in the channel has passed, regardless if it
is inbound or outbound.
There is no VTS in force in Graadyb fairway but a Position
Report System is established for merchant and fishing vessels. The Position Report System does not apply to participants in The Tall Ships Race 2014.
The Port of Esbjerg monitors electronic sea charts with ships
AIS data of the fairway and the harbour.
Three tugs are available: two of approx. 3.000 BHP and one
with 450 BHP.
Tugs are free of charge for participants in The Tall Ships
Race 2014, who have requested tugs. This includes one free
assistance inbound and one free assistance out of the port.
2.1.6 TIDES AND CURRENTS
Usually, the tidal range at the port is between 1.3 and 1.7
meters but strong westerly winds may cause the water level
to increase with up to 2 meters and strong easterly winds
may lower the water level with about 1 meter.
The tidal current is strongest at mid-tide and sets across the
entrances to the harbor basins. At spring tide the current
can rate up to 3 knots.
At the entrance to the fairway the flood current sets from
NNW and the ebb current sets from SE.
2.1.4ENTRANCE
When approaching Esbjerg, ships will have to navigate
through the 8-9 nautical miles long partly dredged fairway.
The fairway is 200 meters wide, well marked with light
buoys and leading lights. The depth in the fairway is minimum 9.8 to 10.3 meters until buoy 21 then 9.3 meters.
In the fairway the tidal current normally sets approximately
lengthwise.
High water occurs at Graadyb Bar 1 hour and 15 minutes
before HW at Esbjerg.
Depths refer to Mean Low Water Spring (MLWS). Depths in
chart 95 (INT 1451) also refer to MLWS.

3. Berthing
3.1GENERAL
As described in section 2.1.4 the entrance to the Port of
Esbjerg is through Graadyb fairway. When you pass buoys
nos. 1 and 2 at the fairway entrance, you must shift to VHF
channel 14 and call the Tall Ships Operations-center.
A position update must be given when passing buoy no.
15A.
The Tall Ships Operations-center (TSR Ops-center) is situated
at Esbjerg Port Control but is separately manned aroundthe-clock while Tall Ships participants arrive and depart.
3.2
Ships assigned to berths 307-308 will be moored at a pontoon bridge with a height from water to bridge of 1 meter.
All Tall Ships Race 2014 participants must report to TSROps-center when moored in their final positions.
Once the ships are moored in the assigned positions;
changing positions is not allowed unless granted from the
TSR Ops-center. Permission will only be given in extraordinary cases.
BERTHING PROCEDURES
The Tall Ships Races fleet will be berthed in Trafikhavnen
(berth 103-114) and in Dokhavnen (berth 301-310). The
berth position of each ship is shown on page 14-15.
3.4. ARRIVAL, DURING STAY AND
DEPARTURE
The Tall Ships Races fleet may use VHF channel 72 for internal communication during the stay in Esbjerg.
Ships berthing in Trafikhavnen stay on VHF channel 14
when passing the breakwaters and report that to the TSR
Ops-center.
At least one Liaison Officer (LO) will be assigned to each
ship. The LO will visit the ship as soon as possible after
mooring. The LO system is described in further detail under
the chapter called Liaison system in this handbook.
Ships berthing in Dokhavnen must shift to VHF channel 71
when passing the breakwaters at the entrance to Sønderhavn and report this to the TSR Ops-center.
In Dokhavnen a fast going MOB will act as “Follow me”
boat. In coordination with the TSR Ops-center, the follow-me boat will guide the ships to their final positions.
3.4.1 SUNRISE, SUNSET AND COLOURS
If necessary, line handlers will be ready on the quayside
upon arrival. The use of line handlers is free of charge at the
first arrival and the final departure.
Flag up and down according to Danish rules.
Most of the ships in Dokhavnen will be moored in nests.
The utmost will be done to berth the ships in accordance
with the berthing plan but the arrival sequence of each
ship and the safe berthing of the following ships may cause
minor changes. However, ships will be berth at the assigned
12
streches of quays. E.g. ships assigned for berths at the
pontoons 307-308 will be berthed at berths 307-308. Ships
moored in outer positions are requested to have a ladder on
the seaside for safety purpose.
Sunrise, sunset and Colours according to below table
Flag down at sunset.
We encourage all participants in The Tall Ships Race 2014
to “dress the ship” during the stay in Esbjerg. Times are
