4. Health and Safety
At The Skills Show Health and Safety is our number one priority. In line with The Health and Safety at
Work Act 1974, we need to ensure appropriate processes are in place to protect the safety, health and
welfare of all involved at this event.
The high profile of our event means that we need to take all possible steps to safeguard partners,
contractors, visitors, competitors, exhibitors and staff members. We ask that all exhibitors who are
involved with the event supply The Skills Show with the required documents to facilitate the safe delivery
of the show.
You MUST submit a valid copy of your Public Liability Insurance covering the dates of the show to
the event technical team along with associated Health and Safety risk assessment and method
statement. Please submit the following documents to [email protected] by no later than
12 September 2014:

-Method Statement
Five Steps to Risk Assessments
Why: a risk assessment will protect your workers and your business, as well as complying with law.
When: a risk assessment should be in place before you or any other employees conduct work which may
present a risk of injury or ill-health.
Who: a person within the organisation who is competent at hazard identification, has the ability to
categorise and evaluate risks and put suitable controls in place to reduce risks.
There are no fixed rules on how a risk assessment should be carried out, but there are a few general
principles that should be followed. Five Steps to risk assessments can be followed to ensure that your
risk assessment is carried out correctly, these five steps are:
1. Identify the hazards
2. Decide who might be harmed and how
3. Evaluate and assess the risks and decide on control measures
4. Record your findings and implement them
5. Review your assessment and update if necessary
A HAZARD is a situation in the workplace that has the potential to harm the Health and Safety of
people and/or to damage equipment.
A RISK is the potential for harm to be realised and the likelihood and severity of this happening.

Health and Safety
17
The Skills Show Exhibitor Manual 2014
The Skills Show Exhibitor Manual 2014
Step 1: Identify the hazards
Psychological hazards are created during work related stress or a stressful environment.
In order to identify hazards you need to understand the difference between a ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’. A
hazard is ‘something with the potential to cause harm’ and a risk is ‘the likelihood of that potential harm
being realised’.
-Noise
Hazards can be identified by using a number of different techniques such as walking round the
workplace, or asking your employees.
Hazards are generally of five types:
Physical hazards are conditions or situations that can cause the body physical harm or intense stress.
Physical hazards can be both natural and human derived elements.
-Temperature
-Fatigue
-Stress
Radiation hazards causes harm to the body by affecting the cell directly. There are basically two types
of radiation: ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation.
-Microwave
-Uneven surfaces
-X-Ray machine
-Small or inadequate walkways
-Computers
-Blocked walkways
-Wireless internet
-Unguarded machinery or work areas
-Mobile phones
-Exposure to electro-magnetic fields
-Incorrect wiring
Look for the hazards:
-Loose surface conditions
-What equipment, materials and chemicals will be used?
-Wet surface conditions
-How much noise and dirt/dust will there be created?
-What mechanical movements and lifting operations have to be considered?
Chemical hazards are substances that can cause harm or damage to the body, property or the
environment. Chemical hazards can be both natural and human derived origin.
-Paint
-Sawdust
-Cleaning chemicals
-Oil
-Solutions
-How waste will be stored and disposed of?
-Are there any chemical or hazardous substances being used?
-Are there any electrical installations?
-What hazardous vehicles/equipment do you have?
-Any working at height or risks from activities at height?
-Can other contractors, staff or visitors harm themselves as a result of your contracted activity?
-What fire prevention measures will be put in place for your contracted activity?
-Will anyone be undertaking any heavy lifting?
Biological hazards are biological agents that can cause harm to the human body. Some biological
agents can be viruses, parasites, bacteria, food, fungi, and foreign toxins.
-Plants
-Animals
-Are any power/hand tools being used?
-Will there be any hot works?
-Is there anything that could pose a slip/trip hazard?
-Humans

Health and Safety
19
The Skills Show Exhibitor Manual 2014
The Skills Show Exhibitor Manual 2014
Step 2: Who will be affected by the work and be most at risk? How might they be harmed?
Once you have identified a number of hazards you need to understand who might be harmed and how,
such as ‘people working in the event halls’, or members of the public.
Think of other contractors, visitors and staff on or near your area. Safe working depends on cooperation, understanding and the exchange of information between all applicable areas, so take this into
account and consider necessary precautions on every aspect of the work being carried out, which may
include training and the provision of relevant information or equipment.
Step 3: Evaluate and assess the risks and decide on control measures
Once you have done this adequately, you can then decide on the appropriate action you are going to
take or are needed to eliminate them.
Ask yourself:
Can the hazard or risk be removed completely or done in a different way.
If the risk cannot be eliminated, can it be isolated, controlled or reduced and how.
Can protective measures be taken that will protect the entire workforce on site?
Protective work wear (PPE) should be considered as the last step to take and may not be the only
solution.
For simple processes it is often sufficient to award a straightforward risk rating of; Low, Medium or
High
Step 4: Record your findings
Write down the findings in the risk assessment and by recording the findings it shows that you have
identified the hazards, decided who could be harmed and how, and also shows how you plan to
eliminate the risks and hazards.
Step 5: Review your assessment and update as and when necessary
This allows you to learn by experience and take account of any unusual conditions or changes that occur
throughout. Update the Risk Assessment as and when required, such as if new work practices equipment
are brought in or new staff employed or the working environment changes in any way. Ordinary handwritten changes are quite acceptable, but remember to implement the changes required for next time.

ensure you don’t have to walk the length of the building.
On foot / taxi drop-off
The Skills Show is being held in the Pavilions and Halls 1 to 4; the closest entry point is the Piazza
entrance as you enter the building. The Skills Show will be on your left.

at the station take the stairs or lift from any platform up to the station interchange. The entrance to the
NEC Birmingham is on the right hand side as you exit the station and is clearly signposted. Continue to
walk along the covered walkway called the Bridgelink where you can then follow signs to reach your
exact destination.
Birmingham International Airport (BHX) is situated next to the NEC Birmingham; it will take just minutes
to get to the NEC Birmingham from the airport.

avoid congestion. As soon as the first visitors are through the door, absolutely no bulky items can be
transported around the aisles until after visitors leave. Bulky items are considered to be anything bigger

the form to show where the electrics are required.
All electrical work must be carried out by our nominated contractor. Power to stands will be switched off
each day 30 minutes after the event has closed.
Each block of stands must have a mains block which power is supplied from. These mains are taken up to
the stands from hatches in the floor; these may appear on your stand but we will endeavour to hide these,
where possible. If a 24 hour power supply is required, you must order this directly from our contractors.
Please note that all portable electrical items must have a current PAT (portable appliance test) sticker.

and ethnicity, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, religion and belief as well as disability.
Health and Safety legislation has primacy over the Equality Act.
The NEC Birmingham is fully accessible for disabled access. We advise all exhibitors to take as many
steps as possible to ensure that disabled visitors are able to enjoy your stand as much as able-bodied
visitors. Further details and guidance on stand design can be found here.
The layout and design of your exhibition should be planned to ensure all visitors can safely and easily
travel around it. Level access is important for wheelchair users, people with other mobility impairments

above ground level.

Interactive
-Do make sure all venue electrical work is carried out by our nominated contractor.
The Skills Show is a highly interactive event; just having a table with a few leaflets is not going to excite
or inspire the visitors. Make your stand come to life by offering activities or demonstrations that visitors
can get involved in. Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking:
-Do ensure that before the event opens, all rubbish and packing from your stand is removed from site.
It must not be stored on, or behind your stand during the event as it is a fire hazard.
-If you are promoting careers in construction, engage visitors with a Bricklaying demonstration, explore
the site office to view the architect’s plans or test your Safety and Speed in a PPE dress up challenge.
-Do check that your insurance policy covers you and your personnel at the event.
-Do you care about the environment? Have a Go at recycling your old paper into new paper, create a
work of Art from old rubbish or explore how to make your own renewable energy.
