Please refer to page 53 in the 2013/2014 College Calendar for information:
http://www.norquest.ca/NorquestCollege/media/pdf/publications/norquest_calendar_2013-14.pdf.
In nursing, there is a duty to public safety. While students are allowed to assume risk to themselves,
it is the College’s responsibility to ensure that the student does not pose a risk to others. Students
with a mental and/or physical disability should review the “Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse in
Canada: Requisite Skills and Abilities” document available through the CLPNA website:
http://www.clpna.com/wpcontent/uploads/2013/02/doc_CCPNR_CLPNA_Requisite_Skills_Abilities.pdf.
If a disability appears to be impacting a student’s progress, the student is encouraged to discuss the
impact of their disability with the Academic Advisor or an Associate Chair for more information on the
role it may play in a clinical environment.

The PN program is composed of 23 courses for a total of 86 credits, traditionally offered over 5 terms.
They are divided into the following categories:



Nursing Foundations (11 courses)
Practical Clinical Courses (5 courses)
Liberal Arts and Science Support Courses (7 courses)
Practical Nurse Program Manual, 2013-2014
Page 8
To obtain credit for a course, you must complete all course components. This includes all the
examinations, assignments, lab skill assessments, and clinical practice. Course credit will not be given
if only parts of a course have been completed.
**For course descriptions, please refer to your College Calendar**
http://www.norquest.ca/NorquestCollege/media/pdf/publications/norquest_calendar_2013-14.pdf
You will learn about the nursing process as a systematic method of collecting data to determine
nursing diagnoses and to plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care. Additionally, you will be
introduced to a nursing theory model – the Conceptual Framework. This model will guide your
approach that will be useful to you for the rest of your career.
CLINICAL PRACTICE COURSES
Instructor supervised clinical practice courses are held throughout the year in Edmonton and
surrounding areas. There are two types of clinical practice courses:
1. Instructor supervised: You will complete a mandatory clinical orientation at the College and
will be assigned to a facility where you will practice nursing skills and care for clients. The
instructor works directly with you in the clinical area and supervises the care you give (NPRT
1001, 2101, 2102). You will work a 37.25 hour work week from Monday to Friday, which may
include day or evening shifts.
2. Preceptor supervised: You work directly with an LPN in the clinical area working the same
hours as your preceptor. This could include days, evenings, weekends, or night rotations.
He/She will supervise the care you give. The PN program monitors your progress through
phone calls and site visits (NPRT 2003, 2004).
LAB SKILLS KIT
Some of the nursing foundation courses have skill kits, which include materials required to
successfully practice your skills. Each student will only be given one kit, and is expected to bring it to
the lab courses.

Face to face students will receive their kits in lab

Distance students receive their kits from the bookstore
GUIDED PRACTICE NURSING LABS
NFDN 1001, HEAS 1000, NFDN 1002, and NFDN 2003 all have lab components attached to the
courses which will allow you to learn to integrate and apply your theory knowledge to perform nursing
skills. The instructional team will guide, coach, mentor, and provide the opportunity for you to
practice the skills competently.
Lab manuals are a great resource for learning and provide you the opportunity to prepare yourself for
the lab. It is mandatory that you complete the lab manual exercise prior to attending the labs.
Failure to have them completed before start of lab will affect your learning and you will be asked to
leave after your instructor has demonstrated the skill. You will be required to complete the skill prior
to returning to your lab session.
Practical Nurse Program Manual, 2013-2014
Page 9
SKILL ASSESSMENTS
Each student will be given 3 attempts at competently demonstrating/completing a specific skill. The
student must perform the skills under the following guidelines:

Within a reasonable timeframe

Competently with minimal guidance

In an organized manner

With the knowledge needed to be aware of normal findings and variations from the normal

With appropriate documentation of intervention performed
First Attempt includes:

If a student is not prepared for the lab session and are asked to leave the lab

If a student does not notify the college of absences with a valid reason

If a student is unable to complete the specific skill competently and in a timely manner
Second Attempt: the student is required to:

Review the appropriate skills DVD which can be purchased at the bookstore, or viewed online

Practice the skill at home and Open Lab

Review classroom and textbook material

Book an appointment for a performance assessment of the skill with a lab instructor (may not
be completed during guided practice time)

Complete the reassessment of the specific skill within one week after the scheduled guided
practice session
Third Attempt:

If a student is unsuccessful at their second attempt of a skill performance, a Learning
Improvement Plan (LIP) is initiated. A Learning Improvement Plan is intended to provide
feedback in writing and to give the student the opportunity to ensure they understand what is
expected before their third attempt. The LIP clearly outlines a plan of action that the student
is required to follow in order to be given a third attempt at demonstrating the specific skill. If
the student is unable to meet the terms of the learning plan, or unable to complete skills in a
safe and competent manner, they will be given a failing grade in the nursing foundations
course.
OPEN LAB
Open Labs are booked through the Practical Nurse Reception line at 780-644-6300. Please check your
MyQuest for the Open Lab Schedule. The schedule is also posted in the lab, and at reception in both
the Health Education Centre 102 Avenue (HEC 102) building in Room B102, and the Health Education
Centre 106 Street (HEC 106) building in Room E220.
COURSE ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments are to be submitted according to your instructor’s course syllabus. The date and time
will be provided by the instructor. Any changes to an assignment will be communicated by the
instructor and posted on Blackboard/Moodle. Failing to submit an assignment will result in receiving
an incomplete fail grade in the course. Assignments must be word processed in APA format unless
otherwise specified. They can be dropped off at reception in room B102 in the ‘Drop-Box’.
Assignments will be time stamped at the time they are due to ensure everyone has handed them in on
time.
Practical Nurse Program Manual, 2013-2014
Page 10
If you are unable to submit an assignment on the due date, you must request an extension through
your instructor BEFORE the due date. You will be expected to provide documentation (e.g. medical
note) to support your request for an extension. A late assignment will be docked 10% per business
day.
EXAMINATIONS
Exams are a tool to assess mastery of course outcomes in all theory courses. Each course outline
specifies the exams you will be required to write and the passing grade needed to meet course
requirements. You are required to present your NorQuest ID before writing all exams. If you are late
for an exam, you will be allowed to come into the room to write it; however, you will not be given
extra time. If a bathroom break is needed during an exam, you must leave all of your exam papers
with the exam proctor, and you will be escorted to the bathroom by a NorQuest College staff member.
If you are going to be absent for a written exam, you are required to notify the program office at 780644-6300, and a deferral must be arranged with your instructor.
For information on Academic Honesty, please refer to pages 36 and 37 of the 2013/2014 College
Calendar: http://www.norquest.ca/NorquestCollege/media/pdf/publications/norquest_calendar_201314.pdf
EXAM DEFERALS
If you are ill or under stress due to personal circumstances, you are NOT advised to write a scheduled
exam, and you must notify your instructor prior to the scheduled writing time. In addition, you must
provide a doctor’s note if you are ill on the day of a schedule exam. If you choose to write an exam
under these circumstances, you will be required to sign a waiver indicating that you are well enough to
take part in the exam, and you will accept the grade earned.
If you choose to defer an exam under these circumstances, you are required to complete the Deferral
form at the back of this manual and have your instructor sign it within 48 hours of the missed exam.
Deferred exams MUST be written within 10 days of the original writing time. If more than 10 days is
required, you must receive permission from an Associate Chair of the program. Please note that if the
course you are requesting a deferral for is a prerequisite course for any of your next courses, and if
the requested deferral goes beyond your course end date, you may not be permitted to proceed to
your next course. As a result, this may delay your expected graduation date from the Practical Nurse
program. Once you have signed your deferral form and you have had it approved by your instructor,
you must bring the form to room B102 to see the Exam Management team and arrange your writing
time.
RELEASE OF GRADES
Multiple choice, and practical exam marks will be posted on MyQuest within 10 business days. If an
error is made calculating a student’s grade, which results in the wrong grade being posted, the
student should contact their instructor to have their grade corrected. Please refer to the Academic
Grade Appeal Procedure, which can be found on our website at http://www.norquest.ca/aboutus/policies-procedures.aspx, for more information on the appeal process.
Practical Nurse Program Manual, 2013-2014
Page 11
EXAM REVIEWS
You are allowed to review your multiple choice exams within 10 business days of your mark being
posted. See reception in B102 to book a time. You will be allotted 15 minutes to review alone. No
group reviews are allowed. If you would like to review a long answer portion of your exam, or a
practical exam, your instructor will need to be present; therefore, you will arrange a time directly with
him/her.
GRADING
At the end of a term, a grade point average (GPA) is determined. You must maintain a minimum GPA
of 2.0 (C). You will be placed on academic probation if your GPA is less than 2.0.
For more information, refer to page 29 of your 2013/2014 College Calendar:
http://www.norquest.ca/NorquestCollege/media/pdf/publications/norquest_calendar_2013-14.pdf
HONOURS STANDING

COURSE FAILURE AND LACK OF ACADEMIC PROGRESS
During the course of your program, your progress will be assessed on a regular basis. Your instructor
may identify that you are struggling and be concerned that you may not be successful, and inform you
of the areas that you need to improve on. Feedback from your instructor may be verbal or in writing.
If informal feedback has not led to improvements, feedback may be formalized through a Learner
Improvement Plan. Your instructor will assist you to create an action plan that will identify the steps
to take for improvement to reach an acceptable level. In order to be considered in good academic
standing within the program, you must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher in each semester. If you do
not meet this criterion, you will automatically be placed on Academic Probation.
See page 116 of the 2013/2014 College Calendar for information on Progression:
http://www.norquest.ca/NorquestCollege/media/pdf/publications/norquest_calendar_2013-14.pdf
If you are unsuccessful in a course, you will be required to repeat it at your own cost. You may only
enroll in other courses if you have met all of the pre/co-requisites. You are only permitted 2 attempts

integrate and apply knowledge, NFDN 1002 and NPRT 1001

NFDN 2003 and NPRT 2101/2102

Completion of all course work and NPRT 2003/2004
If you are unsuccessful in NPRT 1001, NPRT 2101, and/or NPRT 2102, you may be required to fulfill
one of the following requirements prior to repeating the course:

If you are not currently working in a nursing attendant role, you may be required to work an
equivalent of full time hours for 6 months in a nursing attendant role, in a continuing care
centre. You must provide employer verification of hours worked and a satisfactory work
reference on your return to the PN program. You may also be required to successfully
complete a skills review and an integrated skills assessment.

If you are currently working in a nursing attendant role, you may be required to successfully
complete an integrated knowledge and skills assessment. A recommendation regarding
remedial work will be made on the basis of the assessment.

If you are unsuccessful in NPRT 1001, NPRT 2003, and/or NPRT 2004 you will be required to
successfully complete an integrated knowledge and skills assessment prior to repeating the
course. You will be required to pay for and register in XHLT 1050 (a non credit course) to
access the simulation centre and the open labs. This will permit you the opportunity to work
on
integrating your knowledge and skills in the areas where it has been identified that you need
to improve to be successful.
CLINICAL INTEGRATION ASSESSMENT
A Clinical Integration Assessment (CIA) is completed at the end of HEAS 1000, NFDN 1002, and NFDN
2003. All skills associated with these courses must be completed prior to the scheduled CIA. To
receive a passing grade for the course, you must achieve 80% or better on the CIA. If you are
unsuccessful in your first attempt, you will only be granted a second attempt if you achieved at least
60% on your first attempt.

A student who has incomplete skills will not be permitted to complete the CIA and will receive
a failing grade for the course

The CIA time and location will be posted and it is the responsibility of the student to know
when they are scheduled to complete it. If you come late for the CIA, you will not be granted
any additional time.

During the CIA, you are expected to be in full uniform, and have your NorQuest ID on you.

No feedback or cueing will be provided during the CIA

Following the CIA, there will be a 5 minute debriefing with the instructor who marked the CIA;
however, this is not a time to dispute any marks

If you require a deferral, this must be granted at least 24 hours prior to the CIA

If you are ill on the day of your scheduled CIA, you must call the college prior to 0800h, and
you will be required to provide the program with a medical note

You are required to make arrangements to reschedule the CIA on your first day back to the
college. Failure to do this could result in a zero grade for the CIA.

CLIENT SAFETY
You must ensure client safety at all times. If your actions result in an actual, or potential, violation of
client safety, you will be immediately removed from the clinical area. Examples of safety violations are
as follows:

Unsafe performance of nursing skills

Inadequate preparation for the clinical assignment

Inadequate assessment of a client’s status

Failure to report deterioration in a client’s status

Inappropriate, lack of, or inaccurate documentation

Verbal/physical abuse of clients

Dishonesty as to care given

Not following policies and procedures of the institution and/or NorQuest College

ALL standard practices and procedures apply to all PN students
WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PROGRAM
Program and course withdrawals may be initiated by the student or the program. You must complete
a withdrawal form in order to be eligible for re-enrolment or considered for tuition and fee refunds.
Request for refund forms are available through the Office of the Registrar.
If you are unable to complete a course or the program due to health or personal circumstance, you
must meet with your instructor. Subsequently, the program student advisor can discuss the program
completion options with you.
ATTENDANCE
All students: Clinical practice including orientation, guided practice labs, exams, and scheduled
appointments are all mandatory.
Face to Face Students: Attendance is not mandatory in theory classes, although it is highly
recommended. All labs are mandatory.
Distance Students: Distance is self-paced and courses must be completed within the specified start
and end dates.
You must always provide notice if you are going to be absent. This includes all mandatory and non
mandatory classes/labs. You will notify the college by calling 780-644-6300 and providing the
following information:

Your name

Your student ID#


LEARNING IMPROVEMENT PLAN
During the course of your program, your progress will be assessed regularly. If at any time you are
having difficulty meeting course performance outcomes, you may be placed on a Learning
Improvement Plan (LIP), which will advise you of areas that require improvement.
The first portion of the LIP, completed by the instructor, will outline his/her assessment of your
current level of performance in relation to the level of performance required to be successful in
meeting the course objectives. The second part, completed by the student, clearly identifies the
actions he/she will take to improve chances of successfully completing the course requirements. The
instructor may work with you to develop this action plan to identify potential obstacles and discuss
strategies for overcoming them.
The goal of the LIP is to outline areas of concern, steps to be taken in order to address those areas,
dates for reassessment, resources available to you, and the consequences of not meeting the course
objectives. If at any time you do not understand the expectations stipulated in the LIP, please ask for
clarification.
If the performance issue is of a more serious nature, or if you and your instructor are unable to clearly
identify the issues related to your lack of success, then a case conference will be held with you, your
instructor, a program representative, and a student counselor. The case conference could also include
one of the following: academic strategist, student support specialist, or the Program Chair. During the
case conference, your performance issues will be discussed with you, and strategies will be identified
to aid in your success. These strategies will be outlined in a LIP as stated above. It is your
responsibility to follow through on the commitments that you make when building the LIP. A case
conference may be initiated at any time in order to address either academic or behavioral concerns.
All students are expected to act in accordance with the Student Code of Behavior and within the
bounds of their role as a health care professional.
INSTRUCTOR EVALUATIONS
It is important to NorQuest College that you receive quality programs and services, and are able to
find employment related to your education. In order to meet these goals, you will be asked at the end
of each course to complete an anonymous survey on each instructor. A summary of these results will
be compiled and provided to the Program Chair and to the instructor being surveyed (results will only
be shared with the instructor after the final marks have been posted).
CANADIAN PRACTICAL NURSE REGISTRATION EXAMINATION
As a graduate of the PN program, you will write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration
Examination, (CPNRE). Successful completion of this exam ensures the graduate has a safe
knowledge base to practice nursing and qualifies for a license to practice. Until you have written the
CPNRE, and met all of the registration requirements, you will be granted a temporary license to work
as a PN.
If you were previously licensed as a PN in Canada, you are not required to write the CPNRE; you must
apply to the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) for license re-instatement.
If you are an internationally educated nurse who has never held a Canadian PN license, you are
required to write the CPNRE.
Practical Nurse Program Manual, 2013-2014
Page 16
You must apply to the professional association in the province (CLPNA) to write the national
examination. The CPNRE is written 3 times a year (January, May, September).
For more information on CLPNA, please refer to their website, http://www.clpna.com.
APPEALS
Prior to an appeal, you are expected to consult with staff members directly involved in the area of
concern. You are encouraged to seek third party advice, such as a student advisor or counselor, to
help clarify issues and to help seek resolution.

DISTANCE DELIVERY
INFORMATION FOR SELF-PACED DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENTS
As a distance student, you are working at your own pace and are not part of a defined group of
students which compose a class. In addition to the PN entrance requirements noted in the College
calendar, you are required to complete ANPH 1001 and ANPH 1002 as pre-requisites to the program.
Distance orientations are mandatory and available online or face to face. You must book this at the
beginning of your program by emailing [email protected].
COURSE REGISTRATION PROCEDURE/START DATES
In the distance PN program, it is recommended that students take one course at a time in the
sequence outlined in the program schedule; however, you are permitted to take up to three courses at
a time, provided you have the pre-requisites. You are accountable for completing the courses within
the allotted timeframe, including your final exam. You have a maximum of 5 years to complete the
entire program.
Course start dates are on the 1st of every month, and you must register for the course prior the the
10th of the month prior (e.g. register Feb 10 to begin on Mar 1). Each of your courses have a
specified end date which can be found online through the Student Centre on your MyQuest account.
PROGRAM SEQUENCE FOR DISTANCE STUDENTS
The course sequence ensures that you will have the prerequisites for your next course. This will be
provided to you by the Distance Team. The schedule also provides a recommended timeframe for
students in the self paced version of the program, which will lead to program completion.
COURSE EXTENSIONS
Students enrolled in a distance course may be granted a 28-calendar-day course extension, up to a
maximum of five course extensions for the duration of the PN Program. Course extensions must be
requested from the Office of the Registrar a MINIMUM of 14 calendar days before the course contract
end date. You may email the Enrolment Unit at [email protected] to request an extension.
For more information on course extensions, please refer to page 23 of the 2013/2014 College
Calendar:
http://www.norquest.ca/NorquestCollege/media/pdf/publications/norquest_calendar_2013-14.pdf
LABS, GUIDED PRACTICE, AND CIA (DISTANCE)
You will attend guided practice labs after you have practiced the skills at home, and have completed
the lab exercises found in your lab manual. Guided practice labs are the time to demonstrate your
skills to the program instructional team, and you may ask questions during this time. Skills kits can
be ordered through the Bookstore. It is very important that you order your skills kits, as they will
allow you to practice at home before your guided practice.
You must book your Guided Practice Labs in advance by contacting [email protected], or
calling 780-644-6321 or toll free at 1-888-272-5271. Please book your Guided Practice at least 3

Page 18
weeks in advance, and do not book during the last week of your course in case you need time for a redo (you are given 3 attempts to perform the skills at a beginner level of competence). Please provide
the following information when booking: name, student ID number, the course you are booking for,
date requested, and contact information.
Some lab courses require you to bring a buddy without exception. An acceptable buddy is at least 18
years old, mobile, and healthy (e.g. friend, family, spouse). Lab kits are provided to you for courses
that have a lab component, and you must bring the kit with you to each lab. The Guided Practice Labs
are grouped together according to the skills identified by the distance education program. A lab skill
checklist will also be emailed to you.
The instructional team will assess your ability to perform nursing skills, and you will be given a total of
3 attempts to be successful. If you are not successful in your first or second attempt, you are
responsible for making an appointment to re-book. If you are unable to demonstrate competency
after the second attempt, you will meet with your instructor and Academic Advisor to develop a
Learning Improvement Plan. If you are unsuccessful in your third attempt, you will be given a failing
grade and will be required to repeat the course.
The courses with lab components are as follows:




HEAS 1000 (requires a minimum of 2 days in Edmonton with a buddy)
NFDN 1001 (not required to come to Edmonton for these skills)
NFDN 1002 (requires a minimum of 1 week in Edmonton with a buddy)
NFDN 2003 (requires a minimum of 1 week in Edmonton with no need for a buddy)
Each course also has a Clinical Integration Assessment (CIA) where you will receive a scenario that
you will have to complete within a specified period of time. Please note that CIA’s are only available
on Fridays. You must achieve at least 80% on your CIA to pass your course. If you achieve less than
60% on your first CIA attempt, then your second request will be denied as per the PN Program policy.
A first attempt mark of 60%-79% will automatically grant you a second and final attempt.
COURSE MATERIALS (DISTANCE)
Once a course registration has been completed and paid for, you may contact the Bookstore to
purchase materials for the course. You may purchase your material in person, by phone at 780-6446203, or via email at [email protected].
INSTRUCTOR SUPPORT
Instructor support is available to answer your questions as you work through the program by
contacting the course specific email address. The email addresses always start with the course code
(e.g. ANPH1001), and end with @norquest.ca (e.g. [email protected],
[email protected]).
WRITING EXAMS
Distance education students may write exams in their own communities if they live farther than 150
km outside of Edmonton, and it is the responsibility of the student to find a proctor. Exams must be
written in an institutional setting. If you live within an hour of the Edmonton area, you will write the
exams at NorQuest College. Call the distance PN program office at 780-644-6321, or email
[email protected] to book your exams. Please ensure that you book your exams at least two

weeks in advance of when you would like to write, as the times book up quickly. If you are leaving a
message to book an exam, please include your name, student ID number, the course exam you are
booking, and your contact information.
INFORMATION FOR HYBRID STUDENTS (GROUP-PACED ONLINE
LEARNING)
The Hybrid delivery provides students with an opportunity to take the Practical Nurse program by
attending online classes, working through course content online and through self-study, practicing
nursing skills, and participating in clinical experiences. The program follows a sequence and timeline
different from the self-paced distance education program. The Hybrid delivery offers the following:

Instructor-led online classes which can be followed in real-time

Instructor-led face-to face labs offered in or near your own community

Three clinical practice courses are instructor-led and may be arranged in or near your own
community. These schedules may include days or evenings, with 8 or 12 hour shifts.

Two final clinical practice courses are preceptor-led and may be arranged in or near your own
community. These schedules follow the preceptor’s schedule and may include day, evening or
night shifts (8, 10 and 12 hours) on any day of the week, including weekends and holidays.
Your instructor will provide you with a schedule for the program. This schedule identifies the start and
end dates for each course, and will be available on Moodle. Please check this schedule regularly as it
is subject to change. Everyone in your group will start the program on the same day.
The schedule of practice labs for HEAS 1000, NFDN 1001, NFDN 1002, and NFDN 2003 will be posted
on the Moodle calendar. The list of skills and required materials can be found in your lab manual. You
can access online nursing skills videos by visiting the Library section of the NorQuest College website:
http://library.norquest.ca/vwebv/search?searchArg=streaming+video&searchCode=GKEY^*&limitTo=
LOCA=Online+Video&recCount=50&searchType=1
Guided Practice labs provide an opportunity for you to practice your nursing skills and ask questions.
During the practice lab, once you feel comfortable with your performance, ask for your competence to
be assessed by the lab supervisor.
All assignments must be word processed and are to be submitted electronically. Your instructor will
provide you with an email address to which you are to submit your assignments. You will receive an
electronic response indicating that the assignment has been received. If you do not receive this
notification, it is your responsibility to re-submit your assignment. If the assignment fails to go
through electronically, please print out a copy of the sent e-mail, a paper copy of the assignment, and
contact your instructor for assistance in resolving the issue.
Your exam dates will be posted on Moodle at the beginning of each course.

INFORMATION FOR PN REFRESHER (LPNC) STUDENTS
Once accepted in the PN Refresher Program, you will be assigned courses to challenge for credit. The
challenge process allows you to demonstrate your nursing knowledge and skills without having to take
the full course, although not all courses can be challenged. Please see the at the back of this manual
for more details. Students have 2 years to complete the PN Refresher Program.
**Note: Registration for these courses are done through the Office of the Registrar.
As a LPNC student, you must complete open lab practice skills and lab simulation tests as assigned. If
you are unsuccessful in attaining a mark of 60% in a challenge exam and a pass mark on the clinical
integration assessment, you are required to repeat the course in its entirety at your own cost.
PRECEPTOR SUPERVISED CLINICAL (FOR LPNC STUDENTS)
Students may complete the preceptor supervised clinical practice courses in their own community if a
preceptor and appropriate facilities are available.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
ANECDOTAL RECORDS
These are notes written by your instructor to record your performance while providing care to your
assigned client. These notes support the midterm and final assessments you are given for the clinical
practice courses. Your instructor will review the notes with you, and you are required to sign the
record verifying that the information was shared with you.
ASSESSMENT OF OUTCOMES
Assessment tools include assignments, examinations, practical simulation exams, and lab practice.
These tools are used to determine your learning progress toward the general learning outcomes stated
in your course outline.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
A conceptual framework is a set of ideas that are linked and organized in a way that shows
relationships between the ideas. It helps to organize their thinking, integrate knowledge, and build on
decision making and problem solving. Students will be able to use the conceptual framework to help
them acknowledge why they are engaged in a particular learning activity in a particular way. It also
provides a frame of reference when examining and using the theories of others, and applying this into
practice.
HYBRID EDUCATION
The hybrid Practical Nurse program is group-paced, online learning. It connects students in one or
more communities via a virtual classroom. The courses are taken one at a time in a given sequence
so that pre-requisites are met. The courses and the standards are exactly the same as for all other PN
program delivery methods.
DISTANCE
The distance education learning model allows students to learn at their own pace and in their own
space. Students complete their courses on their own schedule and receive tutorial support from their
instructors via phone or email. Lab skills are learned with kits provided by the bookstore and online
demonstration videos. The clinical practice portion of the program can be offered in your community if
a preceptor and appropriate facility are available. The courses and standards are the same as for all
other PN delivery methods.
