ITS-EASY is just starting the third year – it started October 1st 2011. ITS-EASY is a large organisation: it counts 16 PhD students, 10 main advisors from the university, 15 co-advisors from the university and the partner companies, and more than 20 associated members; senior researchers and industrial specialists. The board, led by Helena Malmqvist, ABB, has five members, and the industrial committee where all participating companies are represented, has 9 members. The management team of the research school consists of five members. All in all, about 75 persons are directly engaged in ITS-EASY, which is quite a large consortium, the result expected, and already visible results are far above the results of “standard” 16 PhD students. The PhD students have published more then 35 research papers which is a respectable number. In addition, ITS-EASY, directly or indirectly, boosted many new activities in cooperation with the industrial partners, and with the international research centers. In these two years, for example, MDH and ABB have signed a partnership agreement, and MDH became a preferred research partner of Volvo. The ITS-EASY board members have led or directly been involved in this process. We have also increased a cooperation by exchanging staff between MDH and the partners; for example Kristina Forsberg from SAAB Electronic Systems became an adjunct professor at IDT, Embedded Systems research direction. We also had a successful visit to University of Paderborn, Germany, one of the leading universities in Software Engineering research and know for their successful cooperation with industry. ITS-EASY+ Extending ITS-EASY Postgraduate school From October 1st 2013 eight new industrial PhD students are joining ITS-EASY! The new students will join ITS-EASY and participate in all activities planned for ITS-EASY. The experienced colleagues will help the new students with the advices from their experienced colleagues how to organize their “research” life. ITS-EASY+ students, we wish you a warm welcome to ITS-EASY! IST-EASY is affiliated with the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering (IDT) at Mälardalen University (MDH), as an integrated part of the MDH strategic research area Embedded Systems (ES). 2 Keynote presentations Jan Bosch: Speed and Innovation through Architecture and New Ways of Working The nature of software system development is changing. Rather than building systems according to specification, innovation processes and customer intimacy are at the heart of software development, requiring unprecedented levels of agility and speed. In addition, software is increasingly built in the context of a software ecosystem where other companies and independent developers add value as well. As these trends require small teams to work efficiently and rapidly in the context of large complex systems, the role of software architecture (and that of a software architect in particular) is more important in this new world, but there is significant evolution in its implementation. This talk starts by characterizing the new approach to software engineering and the role of compositionality. It then explores the implications for software architecture and the role of the software architect. The talk will present examples from several industries to illustrate specific focus areas. About Jan Bosch In 2011 Jan returned to academia as a professor of software engineering at Chalmers University of Technology after 8 years in industry. Earlier, he worked as VP Engineering Process and VP Open Innovation for Intuit in Mountain View, California. Prior to joining Intuit, Jan worked for several years at Nokia Research Center. Before that he lived 4 years in the Netherlands where he is a full professor of Software Engineering at the University of Groningen. Nicole Levy: French Research Tax Credit: a powerful incentive for companies' research Regardless of direct aid, a number of OECD countries have a tax support for R & D system. In France, the Research Tax Credit (CIR for « Crédit Impôt Recherche ») was created in 1983. In 2008, a major reform put it to a volume-based scheme of 30% to €100M of expenses in Research &Development activities then 5%. The reduction of the cost of R & D aims at encouraging companies to increase their investment in research. This public support is justified by the externalities generated by the R & D for the benefit of the entire French economy and the risks taken by companies in the process of research and innovation. This public support contributes, through the stimulation of investment in R & D companies to increase the innovation capacity of France and ultimately its ability to grow. The presentation will explain how companies can obtain this aid and the impact of it. About Nicole Levy Professor in Computer Science at CNAM, a public higher education establishment and referent expert of the french Ministry of Research and Higher Education for the Research Tax Credit. 3 Agenda 8:30 – 09.00 Registration 9:00 - 09:15 Opening session 9:15 - 10:00 Keynote presentation I, Jan Bosch Speed and Innovation through Architecture and New Ways of Working 10:00-10:30 Coffee 10:30 - 11:15 ITS-EASY 2012–2013, including plans for the nearest future 11:15 - 12.30 New PhD students in ITS-EASY+ 12:30 - 13:30 Lunch 13:30 - 14:00 Mats Waltré:, the Knowledge Foundation: Supporting research with industrial cooperation 14:00 - 14:45 Keynote presentation II, Nicole Levy: French Research Tax Credit: a powerful incentive for companies' research 14:45 - 15:15 Coffee 15:15 - 16:30 ITS-EASY PhD students' short presentations 16:30 - 17:30 ITS-EASY PhD students´ poster presentations 17:30 Closing the symposium 18:00 Dinner at ACC 4 Participants ABB Daniel Hallmans MDH Abu Naser Masud ABB Gaetana Sapienza MDH Eduard Paul Enoiu ABB Peter Löfgren MDH Elaine Weyuker ABB Tiberiu Seceleanu MDH Federico Ciccozzi Addiva Dag Lindahl MDH Gordana Dodig Crnkovic Addiva Daniel Söderholm MDH Gunnar Widforss Addiva Liz Hoffman MDH Ivica Crnkovic Addiva Melika Hozhabr MDH Jiale Zhou Addiva Thomas Wilen MDH Kaj Hänninen Bombardier Christer Persson MDH Kristina Lundqvist Bombardier Luciana Provenzano MDH Magnus Otterskog Bombardier Mathias Ekman MDH Malin Rosqvist Bombardier Ola Sellin MDH Mats Björkman Chalmers Jan Bosch MDH Mikael Ekström CNAM Nicole Levy MDH Mikael Sjödin Effective Change Stig Larsson MDH Moris Behnamn Ericsson Diarmuid Corcoran MDH Radu Dobrin Ericsson Andreas Ermedahl MDH Rikard Lindell Ericsson Kristian Wiklund MDH Thomas Nolte Ericsson Magnus Schlyter MDH Wasif Afzal Ericsson Marcus Jägemar MDH Yue Lu Etteplan Henrik Jonsson Motion Control Jiaying Du Etteplan Karol Niechwiadowic Rutgers Univ.
