Safety Information
Electrostatic Discharge Precautions
To ensure proper handling of system components and to prevent hardware faults caused
by electrostatic discharge, follow all safety precautions:
•
Wear an anti-static wrist or ankle strap.
•
Observe all standard electrostatic discharge precautions when handling plug-in
modules or components that have been removed from any anti-static packaging.
•
Avoid contact with backplane components and module connectors.
Safety and Handling Precautions
To ensure safe handling and correct operation of the equipment, follow all the safety
precautions and instructions:
•
Observe safe lifting practices. Each High-performance NAS Platform or each
storage array can weigh 66 lb. (30 kg) or more. It is important to note that at
least two people are required to handle and position them.
•
A storage cabinet must be loaded correctly to prevent any serious injuries.
1. Place the Fibre Channel switches in the center of the storage cabinet. The recommended
rack unit positions are 23 and 24. The positions can be adjusted according to a specific
storage cabinet configuration.
2. Load and position the High-performance NAS Platform(s) directly above the Fibre
Channel switches.
3. The System Management Unit (SMU) should be placed directly below the Fibre Channel
switches.
4. The first storage enclosure should be positioned at the bottom of the storage cabinet.
Additional enclosures are then placed above existing enclosures, going towards the top of
the system cabinet.
5. Once the bottom half of the storage cabinet has been filled, the top half of the storage
cabinet can be filled. Begin by placing a storage component directly above the Highperformance NAS Platform and fill upwards.
Note: All expansion cabinets including all storage enclosures, must be filled from the
bottom to the top.
Warning:There is a risk that the cabinet could fall over suddenly. To prevent this
from occurring:
•
Do not remove more than one unit at a time.
•
Hitachi Data Systems recommends that the stabilizer plate be secured to
the front of the system cabinet. For more information, see "Attaching the
Stabilizer Plate to the System Cabinet," on page 8.

Electrical Precautions
•
Provide a suitable power source with electrical overload protection to meet the
power requirements of the system. The power requirements per cord are - North
America: 2 phase, 208Vac, 24A max; 1 phase 110Vac, 16A max. Europe: 230Vac,
16A max.
•
Provide a power cord suitable for the country of installation if a power cord is not
supplied.
•
Provide a safe electrical ground connection to the power cord (check the
grounding of an enclosure before applying power).
•
Only operate the High-performance NAS Platform from nominal mains input
voltages in the range 100 - 240Vac, 60-50Hz, 7-3.5A.
Caution:Turn off all power supplies or remove all power cords before undertaking
servicing of the system.
•
Unplug a system component if it needs to be moved or if it is damaged.
Note: For additional data protection, it is recommended to use an external UPS to
power the High-performance NAS Platform. Also, each of the redundant power
supplies in the High-performance NAS Platform and in the storage subsystems
should be operated from a different mains power circuit in order to provide a degree
of protection from mains power supply failures. In the event that one circuit fails,
the other will continue to power the High-performance NAS Platform and the
storage subsystem.

Each storage enclosure contains multiple removable hard disk drive (HDD)
modules. These units are fragile. Handle them with care and keep them away
from strong magnetic fields.
•
All supplied plug-in modules and blanking plates must be in place to complete the
internal circuitry and enable air to flow correctly around an enclosure.
•
Using the system for more than a few minutes with modules or blanking plates
missing can cause an enclosure to overheat, leading to power failure and data
loss. Such use may invalidate the warranty.
•
A loss of data can occur if a hard drive module is removed. Immediately replace
any modules that are removed. If a module is faulty, replace it with one of the
same type, of at least the same capacity and speed.
•
Always shut down a High-performance NAS Platform before it is moved, switched
OFF, or reset.
•
Maintain backup routines.

Safety Information
•
The SFPs approved for use with supported storage enclosures vary depending on
the original manufacturer of the unit. SFPs qualified for older systems might not
be approved for use with the most current storage systems. To ensure proper
operation of the High-performance NAS Platform and the storage subsystems, use
only the approved replacement parts for each system, which can be purchased by
contacting your sales representative.
•
Do not abandon backup routines. No system is completely foolproof.
Mandatory Regulations
The sections that follow outline the mandatory regulations governing the installation and
operation of the system. Adhere to these instructions to ensure that regulatory
compliance requirements are met.
International Standards
The equipment described in this manual complies with the requirements of the following
agencies and standards:

Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital
device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide
reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a
commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio
frequency energy and, if it is not installed and used in accordance with the instruction
manual, might cause harmful interference to radio communications.
Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference, in
which case the users will be required to correct the interference at their own expense.
Properly shielded and grounded cables and connectors must be used in order to meet
FCC emission limits. Neither the provider nor the manufacturer is responsible for any
radio or television interference caused by using non-recommended cables and
connectors, or by unauthorized changes or modifications to this equipment.

This product has been tested and found to comply with the limits for Class A Information
Technology Equipment according to European Standard EN 55022. The limits for Class A
equipment were derived for commercial and industrial environments to provide

About This Manual
This manual provides an overview of the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform
hardware and explains how to replace faulty components.
For assistance with storage arrays connected to the Hitachi High-performance NAS
Platform refer to the Storage Subsystem Guide.
This manual is designed for administrators who are responsible for the network storage in
an organization.

The Components in the System Cabinet
The system is housed in a 42U high cabinet. A U is a unit of measurement equivalent to
1.75 inches or 44.45 millimeters. The main components are:
•
Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform
The system can contain a single High-performance NAS Platform, or several Highperformance NAS Platforms operating as a cluster. Clusters using more than two
High-performance NAS Platforms typically include 2 x 10Gbps Ethernet switches
(one is required, but two are recommended for redundancy). For instructions on
how to implement a cluster configuration, refer to the System Administration
Guide.

Note: For additional data protection, it is recommended to use an
external UPS to power the High-performance NAS Platform. Also, each of
the redundant power supplies in the High-performance NAS Platform and
in the storage subsystems should be operated from a different mains
power circuit in order to provide a degree of protection from mains power
supply failures. In the event that one circuit fails, the other will continue
to power the High-performance NAS Platform and the storage subsystem.
•
Storage Subsystem(s)
A storage cabinet containing the High-performance NAS Platform can also hold
several storage enclosures. The maximum number of storage enclosures that can
be placed in an expansion cabinet is dependent on the model of storage
enclosures installed. Refer to the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform Storage
Subsystem Guide for more information on supported storage subsystems.
•
Fibre Channel (FC) switches
The High-performance NAS Platform supports Fibre Channel switches that connect
multiple servers and storage subsystems.
Contact Hitachi Data Systems Technical Resource Center (TRC) for information
about which Fibre Channel switches are supported.
•
10 GbE (10 Gigabit Ethernet) switches (used in cluster configurations only)
The High-performance NAS Platform supports 10 GbE switches that connect
multiple servers when configuring a cluster.

through Hitachi Data Systems:

Brocade EdgeIron 8X10G (formely from Foundry Networks), a standalone
10Gbps Managed Layer 2 Ethernet switch with eight ports. This switch
allows you to create a cluster with up to 8 nodes.

Layer 2 Ethernet switch with eight ports. This switch allows you to create a
cluster with up to 8 nodes.

Attaching the Stabilizer Plate to the System Cabinet
The stabilizer plate and mounting hardware are supplied with the 19-inch rack.
Note: To ensure the stability of the cabinet once it has been loaded, Hitachi Data
Systems recommends attaching the stabilizer plate to the rack before loading the
cabinet.
To attach the stabilizer plate to the front of the system cabinet:
1. Place the stabilizer plate up against the cabinet.
2. Align the holes from the stabilizer plate to the holes on the bottom of the cabinet.
3. Place the screws in the hole and secure them into the cabinet.
4. The stabilizer contains two holes for securing it to the ground. Suitable screws
must be used to secure the stabilizer.

Introducing the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform
The High-performance NAS Platform chassis is 4U (7 inches) high, 480 millimeters (19
inches) wide, rack mountable, and a maximum of 600 millimeters (22 inches) deep
excluding the fascia. The High-performance NAS Platform chassis consists of:

Ventilation
On a High-performance NAS Platform, there are vents and fan openings on the front and
the rear. These openings are designed to prevent the High-performance NAS Platform
from overheating.
Therefore, at least four inches of clearance must be present at the rear of the Highperformance NAS Platform rack so that airflow is unrestricted.
Caution: Do not place the High-performance NAS Platform in a built-in installation
unless proper ventilation is provided.
Do not operate the High-performance NAS Platform in a cabinet whose internal ambient
temperature exceeds 40º C (104º F).

FSX2034-1. The component difference has no effect on module/server performance,
and there are no external differences between the versions, with the exception of
labels. If your FSX is an FSX2034-1, the minimum supported software revision is SU

The High-performance NAS Platform monitors the operational status of the
power supply modules so that the management interfaces can indicate the
physical location of the failed unit. However, it is not possible to distinguish
between failed components within a PSU module (such as built in fans).
The High-performance NAS Platform has dual, hot-swappable, load sharing,
AC power supplies. The power supplies are serviced and accessible from the
rear of the High-performance NAS Platform.
Mains power connections are an IEC inlet in each power supply. Each PSU is
only powered from its mains inlet. Two power feeds are required for the
system. Each PSU has an on/off switch to turn on and off the unit without
removing the power cabling. The power connections also have a retaining clip which
prevents accidental removal of the cable.
Each power supply auto-ranges over an input range of 100V to 240V AC, 50 Hz to 60 Hz.
Caution: Do not operate a server with two different power supply models in the same
chassis for longer than it takes to replace the 2nd power supply. It is allowable to
operate a server with different models of power supply for up to 72 hours during the
PSU replacement process.
Battery
Each power supply includes a battery unit that is part of the High-performance NAS
Platform’s stable storage solution. The batteries within each PSU module operate in both
a redundant and parallel manner.
Both batteries must be present and charged to support the full NVRAM backup period, but
either battery on its own can backup the NVRAM for a shorter period of time. A fullycharged, dual battery system should keep the High-performance NAS Platform’s NVRAM
alive for about 72 hours. Charging time will be at a rate of 8 hours of backup for every
hour of charging time, or approximately nine hours for a complete charge.
Warning: PSU model 600 contains a lithium-ion battery that is not field-replaceable.
If the battery in a PSU model 600 fails, the entire PSU should be replaced, and the
failed unit must be disposed of responsibly. Contact Hitachi Data Systems Technical
Resource Center (TRC) for more information on disposing of a PSU. PSU model 610
contains a field-replaceable battery. If the battery in a PSU model 610 fails, contact
Hitachi Data Systems Technical Resource Center (TRC) to arrange for battery
replacement.

When the High-performance NAS Platform is not powered up, or when the PSU is not
installed, the battery will begin to slowly discharge. Periodic recharging is required to
preserve the service life of the battery. Once the battery is completely discharged, failure
to recharge the unit within a couple of days will result in permanent degradation of the
battery service life.
In normal use, the battery life expectancy is limited by chemical processes inherent to
the lithium-ion cells that make up the battery. This loss of capacity is monitored regularly
by the server, and this information is saved in a battery status log. These logs are useful
in concluding the state of the battery.
PSU and Battery Care
Each PSU contains a battery used for NVRAM. To maximize the performance of the
battery, it is necessary to fully charge the battery.
Complete battery discharge can happen if the High-performance NAS Platform is not shut
down correctly, in which case the NVRAM LED will indicate that the NVRAM is still
powered. Verify that the High-performance NAS Platform has been shut down correctly
before powering off. If a proper shut down was not possible and NVRAM does not need to
be preserved, then removal of both PSU modules at the same time, for a few seconds,
will ensure that the NVRAM enters the OFF state and the batteries no longer supply power
to the NVRAM.
Batteries left in a system that has been improperly powered down will drain beyond
usefulness sometime after 72 hours (the NVRAM data retention period). If the battery is
left connected in an improperly shut down system, the battery must be recharged within
30 days.
When preparing a High-performance NAS Platform for shipment or if it is powered down
for any length of time, it is important that the High-performance NAS Platform has been
shut down correctly before powering-off. Otherwise, if the High-performance NAS
Platform is improperly shut down, the batteries supplying the NVRAM will become fully
discharged. This also occurs if the system is powered down for too long without following
the proper procedure.
Note: If the batteries become fully discharged, or the system is to be powered down
for an extended period, see "Powering Down the High-performance NAS Platform for
Shipment or Storage," on page 39. Contact Hitachi Data Systems Technical Resource
Center (TRC) for information about recharging PSU batteries.
PSU600 modules are not field serviceable. When the PSU600 battery pack reaches
the end of its useful life, or when the server detects other PSU performance issues, a
Severe event is logged. Contact the appropriate support organization to request prompt
replacement of the PSU. The original PSU should be returned to the repair depot for
service.
PSU610 modules have field replaceable battery packs. Contact Hitachi Data
Systems Technical Resource Center (TRC) to request a replacement battery pack. When
received, follow the instructions below to replace the old battery pack.
Note: Battery pack installation also is required when a replacement PSU610 is
received from the service depot.
To install a new battery pack in a PSU610, you will need a Phillips #1 screwdriver and the
replacement battery pack. To install the new battery pack:

1. Remove the five countersunk screws and one pan-head screw that hold the access
cover. Carefully set aside the fasteners for later reassembly.
2. Slide off the cover, and remove the battery pack from the PSU case.
Set aside the old battery pack for proper disposal in accordance with applicable
environmental regulations.
3. Pull the connector from the mating battery charger receptacle on the charger
card.
4. Insert the new battery pack with the metal surface facing towards the inside of the
PSU.
5. Align the battery pack connector so that the protruding tab faces the rear of the
PSU module.

6. Push the connector into the mating receptacle on the charger card, and ensure it
is fully seated.
7. Arrange the connecting wires into the PSU casing so that they will not be pinched
when the access cover is reinstalled.
8. Realign the access cover with the mounting holes, and install the five countersunk
screws on the front and side of the PSU. Fasten them snugly but do not
overtighten.
9. Reinstall the pan-head screw through the rear panel of the PSU and into the
access cover. Fasten snugly.

This section describes how to replace the components in the High-performance NAS
Platform. Follow the procedure if you are a qualified System Administrator, Network
Administrator, or Technician.
Note: PSUs and fan assemblies are the only hot-swappable components of a Highperformance NAS Platform. NIM, FSA, FSB, FSX, and SIM modules are not hotswappable components. See "Rebooting, Shutting Down, and Powering Off the
Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™," on page 37 for information on how to
power down a server.
Replacing a Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform
Module (Non-Upgrade)
This section describes how to replace a High-performance NAS Platform module with the
same type of module (a "like for like" replacement). For instructions on how to replace
modules to upgrade a High-performance NAS Platform, see "Upgrading a Sever/Cluster
by Replacing Modules," on page 26.
Caution: All power to the High-performance NAS Platform must be switched off
before replacing any modules.
1. Shut down the server, see "Rebooting, Shutting Down, and Powering Off the
Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™," on page 37 for instructions.
2. Verify that the power switches on both the PSUs are in the OFF position.
3. Unscrew the retaining screws (the screw is only a 1/4 turn) of the module. The
retaining screws are spring-loaded and remain in the module.
4. Remove the module by pulling and lifting the ejection levers outwards.
5. Slide the module carefully out of the enclosure.
6. Replace the module by sliding the new module in the correct position (refer to the
module position indicator) until it stops.
Note: Modules are ‘keyed’ only to fit into their correct slot. Therefore, do
not try and force a module into a different slot. The module position in the
chassis is indicated by the graphic in the bottom right hand corner of each
module.

7. Lock the module in place by pushing inwards on the Ejection Levers until a click is
heard.
8. Refasten the Retaining Screws.
9. Switch the power switches on the PSUs to the ON position.
Upgrading a Sever/Cluster by Replacing Modules
This section describes how to upgrade your High-performance NAS Platform by replacing
currently installed modules with a different model of the module (an "upgrade by
replacement"). For instructions on how to replace failed modules to maintain a Highperformance NAS Platform, see "Replacing a Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™
Module (Non-Upgrade)," on page 25. Note that upgrading modules in the server/cluster is
disruptive for both stand alone server and cluster configurations.
Warning: Ensure that the customer data and configurations are properly backed up
before you begin!
Note: In a cluster configuration, all servers must be upgraded to the same model
before the cluster can be restarted.
Upgrading a Series 2000 Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform to Series
3000
To upgrade a Series 2000 Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™ to a Series 3000:
1. Back up the server configuration (registry).
Using Web Manager, log in to the server/cluster node to be upgraded, and select
Server Admin > Configuration Backup & Restore.
2. Record the IP address through which the SMU is managing the server/cluster. The
IP address is displayed in the Server Status Console with the managed server or
cluster name.
3. Record the current firmware version.
4. If upgrading to a NIM 1200 module, perform steps 4 through 5 of the procedure
described in "Replacing a NIM 1060 with a NIM 1200," on page 27. If upgrading to
a NIM 1060 module, proceed with the next step.
5. Replace the NIM and FSA/FSX modules. See the procedure described in "Replacing
a Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™ Module (Non-Upgrade)," on page 25.
6. Start the server.
7. Reload the firmware (if required) and restart the server.
Once the server restarts following the replacement of the NIM and FSA/FSX
modules:

If the FSA/FSX module does not have a package file pre-loaded, you must
load the package via the SSLoader.
•
If the FSA/FSX module does have a package file, check the currently
loaded package version against the version recorded in step 3. If the
package already loaded on the FSA/FSX module is older than the version
recorder in step 3, you must load the most current firmware package via
the SSLoader.
If it is necessary to reload software, reload the complete software image file (do
not strip unused files). Refer to the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform
System Installation Guide for instructions on using SSLoader and loading the
software.
8. Perform steps 7 through 11 of the procedure described in "Replacing a NIM 1060
with a NIM 1200," on page 27.
9. Swap in the FSB and SIM according to the procedure described in "Replacing a
Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™ Module (Non-Upgrade)," on page 25.
10. Reboot and verify that the hardware database has been updated.
To verify hardware database has been updated, enter the following CLI command:
dblog |grep HWDB
The output of this command should be similar to the following:
HWDB scores: NIM 7, FSM 7, SIM 7
If any module has a score lower then 7, the hardware database is incorrect. In this
situation, contact Hitachi Data Systems Technical Resource Center (TRC) for
assistance.
Replacing a NIM 1060 with a NIM 1200
The NIM module has several variations with different number and types of ports. Aside
from labelling, the only external changes are the number and type of Ethernet port used
to connect to the customer’s (public) network and the private management network.

Before attempting to upgrade a server from a NIM 1060 to NIM 1200, ensure the
following:

You have reviewed the procedure below to familiarize yourself with the NIM 1060
and NIM 1200, and module replacement procedures.

All servers are running code build 4.3.990b, or later. Verify that the server is
running the full package and not a stripped version; otherwise, the code required
for the NIM 1200 is not present.
•
SSLoader is installed on the NIM 1200. If there is no SSLoader on the new NIM
1200, you must upload it manually using Xmodem before it is possible to boot the
server. Refer to the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform System Installation
Guide for instructions on using SSLoader.
•
A copy of the ssc.exe program. If ssc.exe will be run from a Windows system,
you must also have the associated mingwm10.dll file. Storing these files and the
software package files together in C:\TEMP is recommended.
•
Ensure that the 10 gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) and 1 gigabit Ethernet (GE)
configurations match (these configurations must be consistent across all nodes of
the cluster). The number of ports in aggregations and the use of link aggregation
control protocol (LACP) should be the same in both the 10 GbE (10 Gbps) and the
GE (1 Gbps) configurations.
Replacing a NIM 1060 with a NIM 1200 in a Single/Standalone Server
To upgrade from a NIM 1060 to a NIM 1200 in a single/standalone server:
Note: Failure to follow this procedure can result in aggregates being left in a
degraded state after the modules have been swapped, causing the server to report
errors.
1. Back up the server configuration (registry).
Using Web Manager, log in to the server/cluster node to be upgraded, and select
Server Admin > Configuration Backup & Restore.
2. Record the IP address through which the SMU is managing the server/cluster. The
IP address is displayed in the Server Status Console with the managed server or
cluster name.
3. Send any diagnostics to your support organization before and after swapping the
modules.
To send diagnostics to support:
a. Log in to Web Manager.
b. From the Home page, select Status & Monitoring > Download
Diagnostics.
c. Click email.
4. Log in to the server using Web Manager, and delete aggregations 3 through 6, if
present.
a. Using SSH, log in as "manager," then select the server from the displayed
menu.
b. Using Web Manager, log in to the server/cluster node to be upgraded, and
select SMU Administration > SSHTerm.

c. Start SSHTerm, log in as "manager" and select the server from the displayed
menu.
This will display the console, which you can use to enter CLI commands on the
server to complete the following steps. Refer to the Hitachi High-performance
NAS Platform Command Line Reference for more information on the
commands used below.
d. Verify which addresses are currently assigned to each aggregation by entering
the following command:
evsipaddr -l
e. Remove each IP address assigned to aggregations 3 through 6 by entering the
following command:
evsipaddr -e evs_id -r -i ip_address
where evs_id is the aggregation (3, 4, 5, or 6) and ip_address is the IP
address to remove.
f.
Add each IP address you previously removed to aggregation 1 or 2 by entering
the following command:
evsipaddr -e evs_id -a -i ip_address -m ip_mask -p ag_port
where evs_id is the aggregation (1 or 2) and ip_address is the IP address to
add, ip_mask is the IP address mask for the IP address being added, and
ag_port is the aggregation (1 or 2) to which the IP address is to be added.
g. Verify which GE member interfaces belong to which aggregation group by
entering the following command:
agg
h. Remove any GE interfaces numbered between 3 through 6 from aggregations
1 and 2 by entering the following command:
aggedit remove agX geY
where X is the aggregation and Y is the GE interface to remove.
i.
Delete aggregations 3 through 6, if present, by entering the following
command:
agg delete agN
where N is the aggregation to remove (3, 4, 5, or 6).
5. Shut down the server.
6. Replace the NIM 1060 with the NIM 1200.
See "Replacing a Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™ Module (NonUpgrade)," on page 25 for details.
7. Restore the physical network connections.
•
Once the NIM 1200 is installed, public data network connections from the
NIM 1200 must now be plugged into 10 GbE switch ports, rather than 1 GE
switch ports.
•
Ensure that the private management network port (10/100 port) is
reconnected. (Note: the NIM 1200 has a single 10/100 port, whereas the
NIM 1060 has four.)

8. Restart the server.
9. Once the server has booted, verify that the links are up on the newly connected
10 GbE ports.
It might be necessary to make configuration changes to the 10 GbE switch for the
ports used to match the previous NIM 1060 configuration; for example, the use of
LACP or not, and so on.
Note: If the server fails to boot, it might be that the NIM1200 was supplied
without an SSLoader. To make the server boot again, it will be necessary to
upload the SSLoader onto the new NIM module using the serial connection
or Xmodem. Refer to the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform System
Installation Guide for instructions on using SSLoader.
10. Using the console, reconnect to the required server by selected it from the
displayed menu.
11. Upgrade the aggregation information on the server by entering the following
command:
agg-upgrade
Replacing a NIM1060 with a NIM1200 Module in Cluster Nodes
To upgrade from a NIM 1060 to a NIM 1200 in cluster nodes:
1. Back up the server configuration (registry).
Using Web Manager, log in to the server/cluster node to be upgraded, and select
Server Admin > Configuration Backup & Restore.
2. Record the IP address through which the SMU is managing the server/cluster. The
IP address is displayed in the Server Status Console with the managed server or
cluster name.

5. Shut down the server.
Shutting down the server causes all the active EVSs currently on the node to
migrate to another active node. If the Administrative Services EVS is also on the
node being shut down, you will be disconnected. If this occurs, reconnect by
selecting the server/node from the menu displayed on the SSH session. The EVSs
can be manually migrated before shutting down the server, but if EVS automigration is on, the side effect is the removal of the preferred EVS-to-server
mapping.
6. Replace the NIM 1060 with the NIM 1200.
See "Replacing a Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™ Module (NonUpgrade)," on page 25 for details.
7. Restore the physical network connections.
•
Once the NIM 1200 is installed, public data network connections from the
NIM 1200 must now be plugged into 10 GbE switch ports, rather than 1 GE
switch ports.
•
Ensure that the private management network port (10/100 port) is
reconnected. (Note: the NIM 1200 has a single 10/100 port, whereas the
NIM 1060 has four.)

8. Restart the server.
9. Once the server has booted, verify that the links are up on the newly connected
10 GbE ports. You can use Web Manager to check the status of the links:
a. Log in.
b. From the Home page, select Network Configuration > Link Aggregation.
c. For each aggregation, the Status column should display "OK."
It might be necessary to make configuration changes to the 10 GbE switch for the
ports used to match the previous NIM 1060 configuration; for example, the use of
LACP or not, and so on.
Note: If the server fails to boot, it might be that the NIM 1200 has been
supplied without an SSLoader. To make the server boot again, it will be
necessary to upload the SSLoader onto the new NIM 1200 using a serial
connection or Xmodem. Refer to the Hitachi High-performance NAS
Platform System Installation Guide for instructions on using SSLoader.
10. Repeat steps 5 through 9 for each server in turn.
11. Once all servers are upgraded from NIM 1060 to NIM 1200, connect to the SMU
via SSH. Once the connection is made, a menu appears. This menu lists all the
servers/clusters managed by the SMU. Select the cluster from the displayed
menu.
12. Enable the support user by entering the following command:
supportuser on
13. Upgrade the aggregation information on the cluster by entering the following
command:
agg-upgrade
Replacing an FSA Module with an FSX Module
Prerequisites
This procedure has the following prerequisites:

The High-performance NAS Platform/node that has the FSA module being replaced
must be running the latest released major version of the software (for example,
the latest version of SU4.x, 5.x, 6.x, and so on).
•
A laptop or other system is required to connect to the High-performance NAS
Platform serial console port and management network.
•
You must have a complete copy of the software package matching the version
currently installed on the FSA module to be removed.
•
A copy of the ssc.exe program. If ssc.exe will be run from a Windows system,
you must also have the associated mingwm10.dll file. Storing these files and the
software package files together in C:\TEMP is recommended.
•
Necessary serial (null modem) and network cables, and dongle(s).

Warning: There are two versions of the FSX2034 module; FSX2034-0 and
FSX2034-1. The component difference has no effect on module/server performance,
and there are no external differences between the versions, with the exception of
labels. If your FSX is an FSX2034-1, the minimum supported software revision is SU
5.2, and you must configure that module with the SSLoader version from SU 6.0 (or
above). Refer to the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform System Installation
Guide for instructions on using SSLoader.
Replacement Procedure
To replace an FSA module with an FSX module:
1. Send any diagnostics to your support organization before and after swapping the
modules.
To send diagnostics to support:
a. Log in to Web Manager.
b. From the Home page, select Status & Monitoring > Download
Diagnostics.
c. Click email.
2. Check the version number of the SSLoader running on each module in the server.
a. Connect a laptop to the management network.
b. Set the laptop’s computer interface IP address to a unique value on the
management network, for example: 192.0.2.41.
c. Log in as "supervisor" on the server with the module being replaced.
d. Display the version of SSLoader on the modules in the server by entering the
following command:
ver |grep ssloader
e. Ensure that the version displayed is 4.3.983e, or later, on all modules.
3. Shut down and power down the server. See ""Rebooting, Shutting Down, and
Powering Off the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™," on page 37 for
instructions on how to shut down the server.
4. Remove the fan modules and replace them with FSX-supporting fan modules. See
"Replacing a Fan Assembly," on page 36 for instructions on how to replace a fan
assembly.
5. Remove the FSA module and replace it with the FSX module. See "Replacing a
Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform™ Module (Non-Upgrade)," on page 25 for
details.
6. Connect the serial terminal cable from your laptop to the server’s NIM board and
launch your preferred terminal emulation program with the following settings:
•
115,000 bps
•
8-bit
•
No parity
•
1 stop bit

7. Start the server.
8. Assign a unique IP address for SSLoader on this server (in order to allow a new
firmware package to be loaded later in this process, a unique SSLoader IP address
must be assigned to the server with the replaced module).
From the terminal emulation program running on the laptop, during the SSLoader
portion of the server boot process, press the space bar to display the SSLoader
menu.
a. From SSLoader Main menu, select "Configuration Menu."
b. Select the option to "Show 10/100 IP Parameters."
If the output doesn’t show a valid IP address, select "Set 10/100 IP
parameters" and set the server SSLoader IP address to a unique address on
the same network as the laptop. Note that the subnet mask must match the
laptop setting.
c. Exit from the Configuration menu and select "Reset System" from the main
menu.
9. During the SSLoader portion of the server boot process, press the space bar to
display the SSLoader menu.
10. Once the address is set, ping that address from the laptop to verify connectivity.
11. If the installed package version is correct, boot the server and skip the remaining
steps; otherwise, proceed to the next step.
a. From the main menu select "Package Menu."
b. From the displayed package menu, select "Select Default Package."
If the correct firmware package is listed, select it from the available list.
The server will then validate the data integrity of the package file.
If the validation is successful, exit from the package management menu and
choose "Continue Booting" from the main menu.
The replacement process is now complete, and no further action should be
required.
If the firmware file is not listed, or if the package is listed, but fails
validation, proceed to step 12.
12. From the laptop, upgrade the server’s firmware package.
a. Start a command window.
b. Go to the C:\TEMP directory (or wherever you stored the ssc executable and
the software package).
c. Start uploading the new package to the server by entering the following
command:
ssc laptop_IP_address package-upgrade package_name
where laptop_IP_address is the IP address you set (in step 2-b) and
package_name is the software package to upload.

13. Once the package upload is successfully completed, set the package as the default
package file to be used by the server whenever it restarts.
a. From the SSLoader main menu select "Package Menu."
b. From the displayed package menu, select "Select Default Package."
If the correct firmware package is now listed, select it from the available
list. The server will then validate the data integrity of the package file.
If the validation is successful, exit from the package management menu and
choose "Continue Booting" from the main menu.
If the firmware package is still not listed, or the package fails
validation, attempt to reload the firmware package again (see step 12) or call
Hitachi Data Systems Technical Resource Center (TRC).
14. Perform a final reboot to ensure the latest SSLoader is running. See Step 2
(above) for instructions on checking the SSLoader version.
Replacing a PSU
1. Verify that the power switch on the faulty PSU is in the OFF position.
2. Remove the power cord.
3. Unscrew the retaining screw of the faulty PSU.
4. Remove the PSU from the High-performance NAS Platform.
5. Ensure that the power switch on the replacement PSU is in the OFF position.

Caution: PSU models 600 and 610 are physically interchangeable, but may not be
mixed during normal operation of a High-performance NAS Platform. If necessary,
PSU models 600 and 610 may be mixed in a High-performance NAS Platform only for
the minimum amount of time necessary to perform a hot-swap of a failed PSU (up to
72 hours). If one PSU in a High-performance NAS Platform must be replaced, and you
are replacing it with a different PSU model, replace both PSUs instead of operating
with different models of PSUs in the same High-performance NAS Platform.
Replacing a Fan Assembly
Fans provide for front-to-back airflow to be consistent with the storage system
components. The High-performance NAS Platform continues to operate following the
failure of a single fan and during the temporary removal of a fan assembly for
replacement. A failed fan must be replaced as soon as possible.
The High-performance NAS Platform fans are contained within three assemblies, which
are located behind the front fascia and are removable from the front of the Highperformance NAS Platform. All High-performance NAS Platforms have three fan
assemblies, but some models contain three fans (one fan per assembly), while other
models contain six fans (two fans per assembly).
The High-performance NAS Platform’s cooling airflow enables the system to operate in an
ambient temperature range of 10°C to 40°C when mounted in a storage cabinet with
associated components required to configure a high-performance storage system. The
storage system administrator is responsible for ensuring that the ambient temperature
within the rack does not exceed the 40°C operating limit for the High-performance NAS
Platform.
Caution: If a fan has failed, replace the fan assembly as soon as possible to avoid
damaging the High-performance NAS Platform.
Replacing a Fan Assembly
1. Remove the High-performance NAS Platform front panel by releasing the two
latches (one each side).

2. Grasp the center logo to remove the front panel.
The fan assemblies will then be visible:

Note: All models of High-performance NAS Platform are equipped three fan
assemblies, and each fan assembly may contain one or two fans. There is no
difference in the removal or the installation of the two types of fan assemblies.
Assembly types should not be mixed within a server, and you should not replace one
fan assembly with an assembly containing a different number of fans unless you are
replacing all three assemblies.
3. Loosen the captive screws at the top and bottom of the module containing the
faulty fan.
4. Slide the fan assembly out of the High-performance NAS Platform.
5. Insert the replacement module. Push firmly to seat it correctly.
6. When the connector is firmly in place, secure the module with the captive screws
which were previously loosened.
7. Replace the front panel.
Rebooting, Shutting Down, and Powering Off the Hitachi
High-performance NAS Platform
This section provides instructions on how to reboot, shut down, and power off a server or
cluster. For information on starting a server or a cluster, see "Powering On a Hitachi Highperformance NAS Platform™/Cluster," on page 39.
Rebooting or Shutting Down a Server/Cluster
The High-performance NAS Platform can be reset or shut down if a manual reboot is
necessary.
Using Web Manager, log in and select Reboot/Shutdown Server from the Server
Settings page.

The Reboot/Shutdown Server page has two options:

The Reboot button closes down processes on the server/cluster and closes
connections from other hosts, then restarts. There are two Reboot options:
•
Reboot node - Select this radio button to restart the specified High-performance
NAS Platform automatically (which may take up to five minutes).
•
Reboot all nodes - If configured as a cluster, select this radio button to restart all
cluster nodes.
The Shutdown button shuts down processes running on the server/cluster in
preparation for powering down the server/cluster nodes. There are two shutdown
options:
•
Shutdown node - Select this radio button to shut down the specified server/node
and bring it to a state in which it can be safely powered down.
•
Shutdown all nodes - If configured as a cluster, select this radio button to shut
down all cluster nodes and bring them to a state in which they can be safely
powered down.
Powering Down the High-performance NAS Platform for Maintenance
This procedure should be followed whenever a High-performance NAS Platform is to be
powered down and will be left off for more than a day. If, however, the system is being
power-cycled, this procedure is not necessary.
1. Shut down the High-performance NAS Platform(s) as described above.
2. Power down the High-performance NAS Platform(s) as described above.
3. To turn off the System Management Unit (SMU), depress the red button located on
the right of the unit.
4. Power off the storage subsystems, beginning with the enclosures that house the
RAID controllers.
5. Power off the expansion enclosures for the storage subsystems.

Replacing System Components
Powering Down the High-performance NAS Platform for Shipment or
Storage
This procedure should be followed whenever a High-performance NAS Platform is to be
powered down and it will be left off for more than a day. If, however, the system is being
restarted/power-cycled, this procedure is not necessary.
1. From the server console, run the CLI command shutdown –-ship.
2. Wait for the console to output the message Information: Server has shut
down.
3. Power down the High-performance NAS Platform by switching off both PSU
modules.
4. Wait 10-15 seconds, then check that the NVRAM status LED on the FSB module is
off.
•
If the NVRAM status LED is off, the batteries in the PSU will no longer
power the NVRAM, and the PSUs are shut down correctly for storage and/
or shipment.
•
If the NVRAM status LED is on (either green or amber), then remove both
PSU modules simultaneously, wait for at least 10 seconds, and replace the
PSUs in the chassis.
•
If the High-performance NAS Platform fails to shut down properly or to
verify that the NVRAM has not entered the battery powered back up state
when the PSUs are switched off, remove both PSU modules.
5. Optionally, you can remove the PSUs from the High-performance NAS Platform to
fully disengage them from the system.
Note: Complete battery discharge can also happen if the High-performance NAS
Platform is shut down correctly but left in an unpowered state for more than 20
days, with the PSU modules plugged in. If the High-performance NAS Platform is to
be left powered off for any significant period of time, remove the PSU modules from
the chassis.
For long term storage of PSU spares, contact a support representative at Hitachi Data
Systems.
When the system is shutdown under normal circumstances, depending on the battery
charge level, the battery can last from 1 to 6 months. Contact a BlueArc representative
for special instructions if servers or PSUs will be in storage for more than 1 month.
Special provisions will be required for field or factory recharging and retesting of PSUs.
Powering On a Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform/
Cluster
To start/power on a server or cluster:
1. Verify that all servers are switched off.

2. Start all storage subsystems, beginning with expansion enclosures.
Wait until the disk LEDs on all of the expansion enclosures have stopped blinking
(which indicates that they are spinning up) or two minutes, whichever comes first,
then start the storage subsystem RAID controller enclosures. Note that the disk
drives in some storage enclosures will not spin up until commanded to do so by
the RAID controller, so the LEDs may continue to blink until after the RAID
controller enclosure has sent those commands and the drives have spun up.
3. Start the System Management Unit (SMU) by depressing the red button located on
the right of the unit.
4. Switch the power to "on" for first High-performance NAS Platform(s).
To switch the power on to a server, press the power switch on PSU1 to the "on"
position, wait 5-10 seconds, press the power switch on PSU2 to the "on" position.
See "Power Supply Unit (PSU600/PSU610)," on page 21 for more information on
the PSUs in a High-performance NAS Platform.
5. If you are starting a cluster, wait 5-10 seconds before switching the power to "on"
for the next node in the cluster.

Management Interfaces
The High-performance NAS Platform offers two types of physical management ports:

RS-232 Serial (DB-9)

Switched 10BaseT/100BaseTX Ethernet
High-performance NAS Platform Management Interfaces (Series 3000)
High-performance NAS Platform Management Interfaces (Series 2000)
All management ports are physically located on the NIM, and provide connections to ports
within the High-performance NAS Platform cabinet only. The System Management Unit
(SMU) provides the rack component management function.
Note: Depending on the model and configuration of your High-performance NAS
Platform, the number and type of Ethernet ports on the NIM module may be different
than shown above.

RS-232 Serial Management Port
The High-performance NAS Platform has one RS-232 connection port, located on the rear
panel of the server. This serial port is intended to be used during system setup. The serial
port is not intended as a permanent management connection, and this port should not be
used as the primary management interface for the server (the primary management
interface to the server should be through the Web Manager GUI or through server's CLI
which can be accessed through the network).
Any VT100 terminal emulation interface can be used to access to the CLI so that you can
perform management or configuration functions. Connect the terminal to the serial port
(port 1) on the rear panel of the High-performance NAS Platform, then set the host
settings to the values below to ensure proper communication between the terminal and
the High-performance NAS Platform.
Once the initial setup has been completed, you should disconnect the serial cable. If you
need to manage the server through a serial connection, connect to the serial port on the
SMU and use SSH to access the server's CLI.
