Rationale:
Pharmacology is an important and integral part of the nursing profession. The extensive
scientific research in this area is rapidly expanding, leading to a better understanding of how
drugs act and to the introduction of many novel drugs. Therefore, as a follow-up to the basic
studies of medicinal substances in nursing school, this course in the bachelor’s degree
program refreshes and enhances the students’ knowledge and understanding of drugs and their
mechanism of action.
Goals of the course: To refresh and supplement the students’ knowledge of pharmacology,
with greater emphasis on important / new topics.
Teaching methods: Lectures
Course topics: (detailed and updated course syllabus will be published in Moodle)

General introduction and defining concepts

Pharmacokinetics – drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination, excretion

Pharmacodynamics – general mechanisms of drug action: emphasis on receptors and their
sub-types. Also principles of cancer chemotherapy, anti-bacterial and anti-viral drugs

Drugs in the sympathetic nervous system (adrenergic)

Drug therapy for essential (primary) hypertension

Drugs for the treatment and prevention of additional cardiovascular diseases

Neurotransmitters and drugs acting in the central nervous system (CNS)

Dopamine, Serotonin and drugs for Parkinson’s disease and depression

Pain relievers: COX inhibitors (NSAIDs); Steroids; Biological drugs (Anti-rheumatics)

Opioids (narcotics) as pain relievers; Drugs of abuse
Course requirements:
Passing the final examination with a minimum grade of 60.
Prerequisites:
Background in biochemistry, physiology and internal medicine
