1. Do the Media Stations support SIP or H.323 or both?
– SIP only; for both Avaya Aura 6.3+ and IP Office 9.0.3+. The Media Station firmware has an embedded SIP
stack and also embedded media codec library for firmware-native support of SIP Telephony.
2. What wireless capabilities do the media stations support?
– The media stations use Bluetooth for pairing to smart devices . The Media stations do not currently support
WiFi for network connection. Media Stations connect to networks via Cat5 (GigE) with Class 3 PoE.
3. Do the Media Stations support the full Avaya SIP “AST” feature set?
– No. The Media Station is “Cellular Telephony Experience” only with 2 lines for Hold, Transfer, 3-way
conference.
4. Do the Media Stations have their own SmartOS applications?
– Yes. The media station does not require Avaya Mobility Suite licenses so the media stations have a very
thin/lightweight “User Interface” smart application with basic “cellular style” Dialpad, Contacts, Call Log
and media station Login/Settings views.
5. Can users use Avaya Soft clients with the Media Station?
– Yes. All audio-capable SmartApps on Smart OS Devices are supported via BT headset profile to leverage
E169/E159 speaker/microphone use. (Skype, Scopia, One-X, Flare, Communicator, YouTube, GTalk, etc.)
6. How does IT install configure and manage the Avaya Media Station?
– The Avaya Media Stations have been designed to operate for IT/Admin staff like all other Avaya SIP
endpoints. (device installation, management, firmware upgrade, failover, secure media/signaling,etc.)
7. Can the Avaya Media Station be used as a basic SIP POTs phone even when a smart
device is not paired or docked?
– Yes. The media stations have a full SIP Telephony and media stack onboard so they can be configured to
remain registered to Aura or IPO as basic SIP “POTs” phones even when no smart device is present.

Media Station application should launch automatically. If not, launch the
application to configure the E169 Media Station.
If settings file is in use (on company LAN), all the user should have to do is
choose “add account” from application screen, choose appropriate system (i.e.,
“Avaya”) provide their station # and password to log the device in.
Media Station remains logged on even if the mobile device is not available
(shut off, not running app, out of range) until another SIP device is logged in
(assuming MDA not in use) with the same extension number (Aura only).
When the E169 is not logged on, it supports the same E911 (Aura only)
emergency calling capability as other Avaya SIP phones. Phone will display
“emergency” menu on USB handset. USB handset is required for the
emergency calling capability to work when the device is not registered

Device Administration – quick overview for Aura

For Avaya Aura, the E169 uses whatever SIP station type the user
already has administered. For new user stations, recommend using
9630 SIP or similar station type.

Keep in mind that E169 can only make use of two line appearances
regardless of how many are administered on user station.
E169 will not use any administered feature buttons on the station form.
 E169 has been designed to utilize settings file similar to 96X1 series
endpoints and includes some 96X1 features such as emergency
calling when the endpoint is unregistered.

This is designed to make deployment of the device more seamless in an

E169 with 1X Mobile or Avaya Communicator
 A commonly asked question is “can I use E169 with 1X Mobile or Avaya
Communicator?
 1X and AC 2.0 do not have “native” support for managing the E169
base station, but they can use the E169 as a “bluetooth speakerphone”.
– In speakerphone mode the E169 operates as any other 3rd party BT headset or
speaker.
– The call, when handled this way is not being managed by the E169 as a SIP call.
The call is over Wi-Fi or cellular depending on how the call was connected to the
mobile device.
– Users might report lower quality audio in this mode due to the audio going over
wi-fi/cellular as well as different audio codecs and tuning on the E169 for
bluetooth speakerphone calls compared to SIP connected LAN calls.
– Bluetooth connected calls to the E169 cannot be managed by the Avaya Media
Station App. No features are available for merging calls, etc…. All call controls
are handled by whatever app on the mobile device received the call, or by the
built in cellular call functions of the mobile.
 When a 1X Mobile client is docked/connected to E169, E169 will check to
see if the 1X soft client is already registered to SM.
– If 1X Mobile is already registered to Session Manager, the E169 will detect this
and log itself out.
