1. General Description
A modified 20’ container with standard outer dimensions is used as control container for the
pedestal. The container layout has been designed taking into consideration an optimised
man-machine interface and the possibility for the operator to stay in the container for a
complete day. The main differences to a standard 20’ container are described in the following
sections.
In order to provide maximum internal space and in order to avoid humidity problems, all
walls are made from flat steel. This also allows for optimised thermal isolation.
The door is at one small wall of the container. At this side the container wall is installed
approx. 65cm from the end of the structure providing space for air-conditioning and ladder
without increasing the outer dimension. Space for installation of a mast is provided (mast not
included).
A drawing of the container is contained on the next page. The internal layout including
console layout has been ergonomically optimised.
The container has a EMI protected door and a full size EMI protection window with external
blinds (operated from inside), which allows direct view to the track mount. The window can
be opened.
The door and window are equipped with EMC attenuation material which has an attenuation
of -30dB at 10GHz.

1.1. Operator Console
The console is a modular implementation. All electronic components for real-time data
processing, video processing and storage, data storage and all standard handling of the system are
installed in a 19“ console, which is 3 * 19“ wide. This is a specially tailored console made from
steel and painted RAL7035.

The Real-Time Processing Container (RTPC) is the central interface to the keypads. Furthermore
it controls the Crossbar Switch (video) and converts the signals of the local CAN bus to a serial
protocol for communication with the counter part Real-Time Processing Pedestal (RTPP), which is
installed in the pedestal of the MSP-2100. This conversion is transparent and performs a synchronisation of the local CAN busses in the container
and the pedestal. The RTPC is installed together
with power supplies on the System Control Plate
(SCP), which is installed in the rack behind the
middle monitor.
The CAN bus in the container is connecting the
three keypads (Video, Sensor, Radar) with all
Video PCs (APC, MPC, IPC, HSPC) and the
CAN interface of the IC2100. The CAN bus in
the MSP-2100 pedestal is used for communication with the HSHR telescope.
The signals between the RTPC and RTPP are
transmitted via a single mode fiber optical
connection using a bi-directional link via a single fiber. For this purpose, a bi-directional FO
converter with eight multiplexed in- and outputs is used for conversion of the electrical signals to
fiber optical signals and vide versa. Presently only two channels are used for bi-directional CAN
bus synchronisation and uni-directional transmission of IRIG-B DC code to the RTPP.

2. Transportation
2.1. Unloading
Attention: Transportation by forklift is not allowed!
Attention: Smooth handling (especially putting on ground by crane) is required. Shocks may
damage internal equipment!
The container can be lifted to a lorry by means of a crane.
Crane lifting chains can be attached to the four upper ISO
corners using shackles. The ladder allows for climbing on
the roof of the container.
The ladder has two parts, a larger part is continuously
fixed at the container, the smaller part can be separated and
can be used for reaching the fix installed part in case the
container is on a lorry.
A retractable handrail is installed. For preparation, the star
knob at the bottom bracket needs to be unscrewed, turned
clockwise until the rail is released and moved to the middle bracket. There it shall be moved into
the bayonet slot, rotated to the left and screwed to fix connection. Now the handrail can be used for
operator support during climbing onto the roof. After having finished the work on the roof, the
handrail need to be brought into its lower position.
Attention: Climbing onto the roof is only allowed with installed handrail!
Attention: The roof of the container may be slippery! The operator needs to protect himself
during attachment of the chains!
Attention: The container need to be mounted on small wooden blocks on the ground in
order to protect the flat bottom surface.

Attention: The container need to be levelled within ±1°. In case the tilting level is higher,
water may drop out of the indoor air-conditioning unit into the console and may damage the
electronic components.
Four M12 threads are installed in the lower
corners close to the ISO corners. These bolds can
be used for attachment of grounding straps. One
more M8 attachment thread for grounding straps
is installed in the Power Connection Field.
Attention: It is mandatory to connect grounding straps to at least one of the threads!
The external 32A 400V 3-phase power supply is
connected to the CEE connector at the Power
Connection Field. The cover of the Power
Connection Field is locked. The flap is spring
loaded.
Attention: The UPS in the rack is continuously supplied after connection of external
power. This is required to allow for battery charging!
Additional communication connectors will also be installed in this connection field.
2.2. Loading
Attention: As a preparation for transportation all equipment inside the container need to be
securely stored. This is especially necessary for chairs, kitchen equipment, folders, tools etc.
The operation mode switch need to be in position „0“. Afterwards the CEE connector can be
removed. Furthermore all external antennas, which are outside the 20’ dimensions need to be
removed and safely stored.
In the next step the handrail of the ladder need to be installed and the crane chains can be attached.

3. Operation
3.1. Locking/Unlocking
The container is equipped with a door providing EMI
reduction. Therefor this door has a special handle, which
ensures the EMI reduction only in case the handle is
rotated to the vertical position. This ensures sufficient
contact between the container structure and the EMI
sealing of the door.
The installed lock allows unlocking from the inside
even in case the door has been locked from outside.
3.2. Antenna Connection Field
An antenna connection field is located behind the top part of the ladder. The connection field is
covered with a spring loaded flap, that can be locked.
Connectors with lightning protection are
installed in the connection field.
A round cover is installed above a hole. This
hole can be used to feed special cables through
the wall.

3.8. Furniture
A number of furniture is installed at both small walls of the container. They all have doors and
drawers, which can be locked during transportation. All doors and drawers are operated with a
metal handle, which is normally inside the furniture. Pushing this handle extracts it and unlocks the
door/drawer. Now the door/drawer can be operated with this handle.
Attention: Do not forget to lock the doors/drawers before transportation of the container!
3.9. Kitchen Area
A kitchen area is located besides the entrance door. A refrigerator is fix installed as part of this
area. Furthermore a sink with a tap for fresh water is provided. The tap can be folded down.
Opening the tap energises a small fresh water pump, which pumps water out of the fresh water
canister below the sink. The waste water is flowing into the waste water canister. Both canisters can
be easily removed.
The right canister (blue cover) is used for fresh water, the
canister with the yellow cap contains the waste water.
Further equipment (microwave oven, coffee maker and
boiler) can be connected to the power outlets in this are.
This equipment need to be safely stored during container
transportation!
