Included in the collage are pictures of what make Hunterdon unique: The Historic
Hunterdon County Courthouse, which was the site of the 1935 Lindbergh kidnapping trial of
Bruno Hauptmann. Green Sergeant's Covered Bridge in Delaware Township is the last
remaining historic covered bridge in New Jersey. In Voorhees State Park, the New Jersey
Astronomical Association Observatory with a 26-inch Newtonian reflector telescope is one
of the largest privately owned telescopes in New Jersey. Round Valley Reservoir, at
approximately 180 feet deep is the state’s deepest lake and at approximately 2,350 acres,
is the state’s largest reservoir and its second largest body of freshwater. The war memorial
topped with a statue of a Union Civil War Soldier located in the center of Flemington, which
honors the veterans of all wars. The picturesque truss and charming stone arch bridges
which can be seen throughout the county. The Volendam Windmill, an authentic model of
a wind-driven mill used for grinding raw grain into flour, was designed and built by the late
Paul Jorgenson and his wife in Holland Township. Hunterdon County’s Arboretum with its
gazebo is a popular location for wedding pictures. The Delaware and Raritan Canal State
Park wanders through quaint New Jersey towns along the Delaware River such as
Stockton and Lambertville.
All of these characteristics along with the flora and fauna combine to make Hunterdon
County a unique and exceptional place to live, work and play.

MEETINGS and PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
The regular meetings of the Hunterdon County Board of Chosen Freeholders
are held on the 1st an d 3rd Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. T hese
meetings are open to the p ublic for discussion and comment at 6:00 p.m.
Additional meetings must b e announced at least 4 8 hours in advance.
Meetings are held in the Freeholders' Assembly Space at the Administration
Building,71 Main Street, Bldg #1, Flemington, New Jersey.
The Office of the Clerk of the Board of Chosen Freeholders is located in the
Administration Building, 71 Main Street, Bld g #1, with office hours from 8:00
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each weekday. An yone wishing to be scheduled on t he
agenda for a Freeholder Meeting may do so by writing to the Clerk pri or to
4:00 on the Monday the week prior to the regular meeting day. If necessary,
you may contact her by telephone at (908) 788-1102.

BOARD OF CHOSEN FREEHOLDERS
The top governin g body in Hunterdon County - the Board of Cho sen
Freeholders being its exact name - ori ginated in Eng land, dating back t o at
least the sixteenth century.
"Freeholders" as a term, is unique to Ne w Jersey but it is comparable to
similar officials in other state s where they are called County Commissioners
or Supervisors.
Originally a F reeholder was a person in th e British Ro yal Court who was
considered responsible in ch aracter or othe rwise in favor with the King and
therefore a worthy recipient as an o wner (holder) of lan d grants in th e new
American Colony.
Many years later, on Jul y 2, 1776, just two days before the Declaration of
Independence was signed in Philadelphia, the Provinc ial Congress of Ne w
Jersey, met in Burlin gton and declared its separ ation from King George and
the British Parliame nt. The meeting provided that qual ified voters were to
elect various officers under the "h ands" (approval) of si x Freeholders. By
then, Hunterdon had been in existence as a County since 1714.
Legislation in 1798 set th e make-up of F reeholder Boards at o ne elected
representative for each mun icipality. There were ten i n Hunterdon at that
time. It was not until 1904 that State Legislation allowed smaller Freeholder
Boards and a public vote set the Hunte rdon County Board with three
members. By a vote of the people in 1998, the Hunterdon County Board was
set at five members, which is continued to this day.
As top govern ing officials of Hunterdon County, the five Freeholders are
chosen by popular vote i n the N ovember general elections. T he term of
office is for three years and the current compensation is $16,000 a year, with
an extra $1,000 for the Director.
