Introducing the First Comprehensive Manual on Citrus Production, from
University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources
Not since the publication of The Citrus Industry volumes of the 1970s, has
the University of California’s Division Agriculture and Natural Resources
(UC ANR) published a more comprehensive resource on citrus production.
Citrus Production Manual is written for growers, nurserymen, pest control
advisors, and regulatory agencies. While written with the California citrus
industry in mind, growers worldwide will find the manual a useful reference.
A full range of hot topics including HLB, citrus leafminer, and a host of other
invasive pests and diseases are included in these 434 pages, along with the
latest information on orchard establishment, irrigation and fertigation, nutrient management frost protection, biotechnology, and postharvest handling. The
chapter on developing issues and opportunities within citrus production provide
an important look at water quality, precision agriculture, ozone pollution, and
biotechnology.

Citrus Production Manual
What can readers of the Citrus
Production Manual expect to find ?
The manual is good, solid, practical
information on how to grow a citrus
orchard from start to finish. The
information is backed by University
of California and industry research
presented in an easy-to-use and easily
understood format. Is the Citrus Production Manual
written exclusively for the California
region?
The manual is written with California
growers in mind. However, there are
many areas of the world with a similar
climate; so it will be a valuable tool for
those growers too.
What is a common mistake made
by citrus growers?
Undervaluing the importance of
choosing the right rootstock and scion
for their particular region.

What can readers expect to find in
the Citrus Production Manual that
they may not find in similar books on
citrus? Since the Citrus Industry volumes were
produced in the 1970’s, there has not
been a comprehensive manual for
California citrus growers that covers
all aspects of production. UC ANR’s
IPM for Citrus and the Citrus Pest
Management Guidelines provide
valuable pest management information,
but they do not cover the basics of
establishing an orchard, conducting
horticultural practices to maximize
production, or postharvest handling.
