Our Pastor:
The Reverend Donnie R. Garris
Pastor Garris is a native of
Monroe, North Carolina. In 1984, he
was licensed to the Gospel Ministry
at the Friendship Missionary Baptist
Church in Monroe, NC. In 1985, he
was ordained by the Zion Missionary
Baptist Association of North
Carolina. He has served as an
associate minister, interim pastor,
assistant pastor and senior pastor of
various churches in North Carolina
and New Jersey.
Pastor Garris attended Shaw University in Raleigh, North
Carolina and received a Bachelors of Arts degree in 1988. He
attended Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey
and in 1991 received a Masters of Divinity degree with an emphasis
in Old Testament.
Pastor Garris accepted the call to pastor the Antioch Missionary
Baptist Church on January 26, 1997 and began his service on March
2, 1997. During his years as pastor, there has been a great increase
in the spiritual life, ministry and membership of the church. A few
of his accomplishments since assuming leadership of Antioch
Baptist Church include: stimulated a membership growth to
currently 750+ members, and led the church in drafting a mission
statement: "Helping Persons to Realize God's Created Intent for His
or Her Life as Designed by God's Word in the Areas of Worship,
Discipleship, Evangelism, Ministry and Fellowship." He helped to
register the church website www.antiochfamily.org, led the church
in a major renovation and beautification project that included the
sanctuary, fellowship hall and office areas. Currently, he is leading
the church in a “SPACE" vision - the building of a ministry center
for our church and the community.
Pastor Garris has initiated and inspired several ministries that
encourage members to share their spiritual gifts, leadership and
Christian service. To name a few: Youth Church, Seniors-on-theMove (ages 55 and older); Multimedia Ministry; Married Couple's
Ministry; Wednesday Night Bible Study; J.O.Y. (Jesus, Others and
3
You) Youth Ministry for ages 5-17; Heaven Bound Young Adult
Ministry (ages 18- 35); Women's Ministry; Healing Ministry; Men’s
Ministry; Wednesday Noon "Hour of Power" Bible Study; Associate
Ministers’ Fellowship; and regular training workshops and seminars
to equip our leaders and teachers in the work of their ministry. In a
joint venture with Friendship Baptist Church, Charlotte, he has led
members of our church to participate in a foreign mission's work teaching of Vacation Bible School to 300-400 children and adults in
Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
Pastor Garris shares his leadership, commitment and service with
the following affiliate church ministries and community
organizations: a strategy team leader and active pastor in H.E.L.P.
(Helping Empower Local People); a board member of CrossRoads
Corporation for Affordable Housing and Community Development,
Inc.; an active supporter of R.A.I.N. (Regional AIDS Interfaith
Network); a member of the Interfaith Advisory Council of Charlotte
-Mecklenburg Schools; and was appointed by Governor Beverly E.
Perdue to serve as a member of the Martin Luther King, Jr.
Commission for the term May 16, 2011-June 30, 2015. Pastor
Garris works closely with the Grier Heights Community
Organization, Grier Heights Presbyterian Church, Charlotte Police
Department, Anuvia Center and other local agencies. He is involved
with these organizations in sponsoring a Back-to-School Book-bag
Rally and a Hallelujah Community Festival in lieu of the observance
of Halloween and other community-building events.
Pastor Garris is
married to the former
Regina L. Mack, also
very active Team Leader
of the Sisters in Christ
Women’s Ministry and
was recently licensed to
the Gospel Ministry, and
together they have one
son, Jonathan Christian
(who is active on our
Worship Media Ministry and with the Youth Ministries). We give
thanks to God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us and
for sending us an anointed Pastor, Preacher, Leader, Teacher,
Visionary, Counselor, and Friend. He is a man after God's own heart
who has won our hearts as well.

A Word from
Pastor Donnie Garris…
I thank God for fifteen (15) years of service to
Christ at the Antioch Church!
It is said that the words “thank” and “think”
come from the same root, reminding us that
thanksgiving comes from thinking about our
blessings. As I think about my long 15 years of service, I do have a
lot of blessings for which to thank God!
 The numerous persons who surrendered their life to Christ
through the preached Word…
 The countless people who gain a deeper understanding of the
Bible through the taught Word…
 The various persons who worshiped and fellowshipped with us
in this gathered Church community…
 The many people in the Body of Christ I have served and
served with in the community and across this city...
 The host of people I have married, baptized, counseled,
dedicated…cried with, laughed with, joked with, prayed with…
greeted, welcomed, befriended, assisted…
 The scores of young people I have watched grow up, go to
college and get their diplomas and degrees...
 The blessings in my ups and downs, highs and lows, good
times and bad times, smiles and tears, mountains and valleys,
sunshine and storms…
 The glory God has received, the good people have done and
the growth I have gained.
If I had a thousand tongues, I couldn’t praise God enough! When
I think of God’s goodness across these many years, my soul shouts
out, “Hallelujah!” Thank God for 15 years of service to Christ and
His Church! May the service I’ve given to you, the work I’ve done
with you and the life I’ve lived before you speak for me!
To the Pastor Appreciation Committee, the officers and members
of Antioch, I say thank you along with Regina and Jonathan.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Donnie Garris

Charlotte, NC
Rev. James currently serves as pastor of the Grier
Heights Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North
Carolina. Prior to coming to Charlotte, he was
pastor of the New Liberation Church in San Francisco, CA for eight
years and Rice Memorial Presbyterian Church for three years. He
has come to appreciate a variety of things that relate to life and
living.
He is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas where he learned to
appreciate the value of the Black community. His many role
models represented the arenas from the church to the local pool
hall. In his words: I owe much to the people of the community
*in Little Rock+ that helped to guide and direct me.”
Larry holds a Bachelors Degree from The Arkansas Baptist
College in Little Rock; a Masters of Divinity Degree from Johnson
C. Smith Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center
in Atlanta, GA.

His greatest love and passion is for family. He still has close
family ties in Arkansas with his mother, brothers, aunts, uncles,
cousins and nephews. He has been married to Patricia James for 40
years. They have two children, Larry II who resides in Atlanta, and
Leah who resides in Charlotte. They have three grandchildren,
Laryn, age10, Landon age 7, and Dylen age 2.
Rev. James’ passion for family is what he seeks to establish in a
church family. He believes that is what family is about. He states
that when families are well and productive, the potential for
community grows exponentially. His ministry focus is lifting high
the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are in search of ultimate
truth that leads to spiritual freedom.

Pastor Donnie, Minister Regina and
Jonathan Garris:
We just want to say in the name of
the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit,
that it has been a pleasure serving
you in ministry. In fact, we thank God
for you preaching, and teaching us
that “The body is not one member,
but many.”
(I Corinthians 12:14) It’s in our Bibles
it ought to be in yours! Every member
has played a part these past several
years.
The Spirit of God has guided us in
making every occasion special and
memorable so that you would cherish
them for the rest of your lives.
The 2012 Pastor Appreciation
Committee
of Antioch would likes to say
16
As we congratulate and
celebrate Pastor for 15
wonderful years,
Remember:
Do you know how truly blessed we are
as a church? Some church congregations
do nothing but gripe all the time about
their pastor, and about all the changes
that are being made that make them get
out of their comfort zone and do
something different. We at Antioch do our share of griping, but, I
pray to God Almighty that it is good griping so that we can go
forth and do what “thus saith the Lord” even if we don’t agree with
whatever it is.
We are gloriously celebrating our Pastor’s fourteenth
anniversary. We praise him for all he has done for us with the help
and guidance of the Lord. We thank him for being who he is. We
present him with material and monetary gifts to show our
appreciation. We even do what Antioch loves to do best– we share
a fellowship repass with him and his family.
Thank God for his family - Regina and Jonathan. Did you
know that the name “Jonathan” means “gift from God?” Well, the
whole family should be named Jonathan because they are a gift
from God to our church!
Pastor Garris gracefully and humbly allows us to grow in our
faith and understanding through his teaching and his preaching. He
gently prods us “to be doers of the Word, not just hearers of the
Word.” He raised our mission statement so that we know what is
expected of us as God’s people. We start at home getting our own
house in order by learning to worship God fervently as we become
better disciples of His Word. We are sharing, our faith with the
community – reminding those around us that God loves them and
that they are important to us also.
Our Pastor is precious to us and we need to pray for him. We
often see him as an “unrealistic combination of the Apostle Paul
and Billy Graham. Have you ever thought about all the jobs our
Pastor performs? He doesn’t complain because as he constantly
reminds us he is first of all “a servant of God!” We must surround
him with the mighty power of prayer that he will continue to serve
our needs.
17
18
FROM YOUR CHURCH FAMILY
When you came to us, we were unsure,
With all of our needs, would you endure?
There has to be times you wanted to quit,
But the Lord said "No, stick around a bit."
Angels Among Us
That bit of time, well it came and it went.
Because we needed a pastor, you were sent.
We have been through good times and bad,
But you stuck around and that makes us glad.
The hands that give to those in need
The heart that loves in faith and deed
The voice that speaks the truth decrees
These are angels among us.
We share 15 years of wonderful memories here,
And all of them in our hearts, we hold dear.
You have been our pastor, our guide, and friend.
Your wisdom is so helpful as on God you depend.
The common cause to help all those
Whether they be friends or foes
The compassion for all so lovingly grows
These are angels among us.
It has been 15 years of good times and bad,
Most of them were happy, but some were sad.
Some of us have gone on to be with the Lord,
But we are still here with rivers to ford.
The forgetting of self to the service to others
The knowledge we are all sisters and brothers
The extra mile is the distance they cover
These are angels among us.
We will have trials and storms to go through,
But you have been there and shown us what to do.
Our prayers each day include you as we pray,
And we must give thanks for you each day.
The Christ-like spirit to demonstrate
The limitless love from God so great
The disciple who walks so humble and straight
These are angels among us.
Now, may the Lord be with you all of your days
And continue to use you as you give Him praise.
We love and appreciate you for all you have done
As we look back in wonder, where have the years gone?

15TH ANNIVERSARY SCRIPTURES
“It’s A Family Affair”
Rev. Donnie Garris
our son, brother, uncle and shepherd;
Minister Regina Garris
our daughter- and sister-in-law, aunt and friend;
Jonathan Garris
our grandson, nephew, cousin and shining star,
Congratulations to you on your
15th anniversary at Antioch!
We celebrate your years of unwavering commitment
to God, your ministry, church and our family.
You are truly God’s Angels Among Us!
We love, cherish, support and embrace you
unconditionally!
The Garris Family
Ephesians 4:7-13
7But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ
apportioned it. 8This is why it says: “When he ascended on
high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.
9(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also
descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10He who
descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the
heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11So Christ
himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the
pastors and teachers, 12to equip his people for works of
service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until
we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the
Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole
measure of the fullness of Christ.
“I’m Coming Out With My Hands Up!”
I Timothy 2:1-8
1I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession
and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2for kings and
all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet
lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and
pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all people to be saved
and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one
God and one mediator between God and mankind, the
man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all
people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.
7And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an
apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying —and a
true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. 8Therefore I want
the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without
anger or disputing.

“You Better Recognize”
ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES
July 8, 2012
Proverbs 31:10-31
A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth
far more than rubies. 11Her husband has full confidence in
her and lacks nothing of value. 12She brings him good, not
harm, all the days of her life. 13She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands. 14She is like the merchant
ships, bringing her food from afar.
15She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for
her family and portions for her female servants. 16She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a
vineyard. 17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms
are strong for her tasks. 18 She sees that her trading is
profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her
hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her
fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands
to the needy. 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her
household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. 22 She
makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen
and purple. 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. 24 She
makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the
merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can
laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom, and
faithful instruction is on her tongue. 27 She watches over
the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of
idleness. 28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
29“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them
all.” 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a
woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Honor her
for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring
her praise at the city gate.

WORK AVAILABLE - LABORERS NEEDED
Jesus said to them, " My food is to do the will of Him who sent me,
and to finish His work."
Do not say, 'There are still four months and then comes the harvest?'
Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are
already white for the harvest!’ John 4:34-35
Are we in a field that is ripe for harvest and are not even aware of it?
Are we delaying the gathering by thinking, harvest time is not come. We
still have four months. Look around saints, here in the Grier Heights
community, there is a great harvest. God has placed us here as laborers
to gather His crop. There are lost souls in this community who need to
be gathered and led to Christ for salvation.
Each one of us who know Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord is a
harvester. Someone harvested us one day. It is our responsibility to join
now in helping others who are lost.
Our pastor has been placed here to lead and encourage us to go out
into the Grier Heights Community to minister and be a witness to the
unsaved. He is not here by chance or even his own undertaking. God
has assigned him here for a season. God chose him out of all the'
Called' to be in Grier Heights at Antioch Baptist Church to labor in this
field, for the harvest is plentiful. He is our overseer. We are the laborers
under his leadership. Let’s continue to commit to labor until there is a
change in the hearts of those who live in this community.
Let us pray for our pastor, Donnie R. Garris and his family, daily this
month that he (they) be renewed, refreshed and revitalized in
spirit ,mind, and body. We pray for his commitment to serve God and to
minister to His people as God leads him.
Let us pray that as our pastor is being ministered to during this
sabbatical , the Holy Spirit will renew in us the mind of Christ to continue
to serve Him, to be in unity and to devote ourselves to service, always
striving to do God's will.
As intercessors we ask you to: Pray daily for Pastor Garris and his
wife, Minister Regina Garris and their son, Jonathan. Pray for Antioch
Baptist Church that we will commit to the call as Laborers for Christ in
this community. Prayerfully submitted, The Prayer Intercessors of
Antioch
