MoPTA Training
Northwest Missouri State University
July, 2014
Introduction
The Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA) is an online performance assessment developed
by ETS that DESE has mandated for all Missouri student teachers as of the fall 2014 trimester. We have
piloted this assessment in the fall 2013 trimester and spring 2014 trimesters. This training will show
how students can prepare their four MoPTA tasks during the fall 2014 trimester and upload them to
Tk20.
MoPTA and Tk20
For the fall 2014 trimester, student teachers will use Tk20 to upload their MoPTA’s. When the full
implementation begins in the fall 2015 trimester, student teachers may use a different system.
Tasks of MoPTA
Like our Teacher Work Sample, the MoPTA is split into pieces. Instead of our seven elements, it is split
into four tasks. The content requirements and rubric of each task are listed later in this training. The
content of these tasks are similar to the TWS elements, except for the video requirement in Task 4.
However, the video is not required during the fall 2014 trimester.
Other MoPTA Notes
1. MoPTA exemplars from last semester will be provided as a link from the student teaching
website in the “forms & documents”) section:
http://www.nwmissouri.edu/dept/peu/studentteach/index.htm
2. Focus students (see below) can be different students for different tasks.
3. Above all else, you MUST use Google Chrome as your browser when using Tk20.
Video: If You Choose to Upload to Tk20
As mentioned previously, the video portion of MoPTA is not required this semester. But, if you would
like to upload a video of your student teaching experience to Tk20, please use the following guidelines:
Videos Guidelines for MoPTA
If you would like to upload a video to your MoPTA during the fall 2014 trimester, you should follow
these guidelines:
1. Please do not upload videos over 100 MB. We will show below how students can edit and
compress their videos. If they need more storage space to upload videos, they should contact
Mike McBride at [email protected]
2. We ask students to upload three videos to their MoPTA. We ask that in these videos students
utilize three different instructional strategies.
3. We recommend that students take six or seven videos, and use their top three.
4. These videos do not have to include when all things went right in the classroom. They could be
an example of how things did not go well and then the student teacher can explain in their task
4 section how they would do things differently in the future.
5. Please use Windows Movie Maker to edit videos (if possible) and then upload wmv files.
2
Instructions on how to save, edit and upload these videos are listed below:
1. Open file in Windows Movie Maker (if possible).
2. On right, click “browse videos” and find video file
3. Edit by clicking on the “Edit” button in the toolbar, and then using the “set start point” and “set
end point” options to get the right clip to use.
4. If your video is still larger than 100MB (a 60-70MB size would be optimal), you should compress
it further.
5. To compress your video, use pulldown on upper left hand (left of the “home” tab, and above the
“paste” icon)
6. Choose option “save movie”
7. Choose option “for email”
8. Save the new video in a known location.
Understanding Tasks 1-4
To know and complete requirements for tasks 1-4 on the MoPTA, students need to become familiar with
the directions and rubrics for each of these. These will be found in the “forms and documents” section
of the student teaching website here:
http://www.nwmissouri.edu/dept/peu/studentteach/mopta.htm
