Preliminary Installation Requirements
 Implement must be lowered to ground or resting on hydraulic safety stops
before beginning installation. Do not rely on hydraulic system alone to
support implement. Hydraulics can fail – resulting in serious injury or
death.
 Read these instructions completely before beginning installation. They
cover multiple clutch setups, so a thorough understanding is essential
before beginning.
Installation
1. Remove seed meter assembly from row unit.
2. Remove seed meter engagement drive from row unit. (See Figure 1, 2)

3. Once removed you should be left with a round cutout with two squared
holes. (See Figure 3)

4. Secure the square mounting bracket to the motor using the provided
fasteners. For a 3000 series row unit, once fastened the bracket should be
positioned to use the wider spaced threaded holes. For a 2000 series or a
JD 7000 row unit the narrower spaced threaded holes will be utilized. The
motor can be mounted straight up or tilted towards the rear of the row
unit. (See Figure 4)

5. Utilize the spacer from the drive engagement and place it on the inside of
the row unit along with flat washers and 5/16 in bolts to secure the motor
and mount to the row unit. (See Figure 5)

6. Once assembled it will resemble Figure 6.
*Note Motor may be mounted straight up unless using a Kinze Edgevac*

7. Attach a John Deere butterfly drive to the seed meter. The butterfly drive
uses a small clip instead of a roll pin so to make it fit properly cut the roll
pin off flush with the meter shaft to reduce the size of the hole in the meter
shaft. Position the supplied driver so it aligns with the butterfly drive on the
seed meter. (See Figure 7)

8. To drive an insecticide meter use the drivers with attached sprockets
should line up as they originally did from the factory. (See Figure 8)

9. Route and secure wiring along the top of the row unit and the top parallel
arm toward the toolbar. (See Figure 9)

10.Route control harness along with existing wiring and away from pinch
points. (See Figure 10)

11.Position the Control Board in between the four rows with the label facing
toward the rear of the planter. Standing behind the planter the Gray
connector will be toward the left and the Black connector toward the right.
(See Figure 11) Connect the Control Harnesses to the corresponding
colored connectors on the Control Board.

12. Connect the leads from the two Control Harnesses, the Capacitor and the
2AWG power and ground row unit cables that run to the next Control
Board to the corresponding colored junction blocks and cover with the
provided boots. (See Figure 12)

13. Connect the Planter Power harness to the provided solenoid assembly to
provide a power disconnect for the system. (See Figure 13)

14.There are four terminals on the solenoid. The two larger terminals carry the
high current signal. Attach the red lead on the power harness to one of the
larger terminals. Then connect the 2AWG jumper to the other large
solenoid terminal and the red junction block. Take the black lead from the
tractor power harness directly to a black junction block. The black junction
block serves as a direct connection between the tractor and planter
ground. Note that the above picture doesn’t show the included wire boot.
To prevent accidental electrical arcing, ensure the boots are installed.
15.The smaller terminals need to have power and ground. The terminals are
not polarity sensitive. It is suggested to use a toggle switch in the cab to
energize the solenoid. Mount a toggle switch in the cab and provide ground
to one side of the toggle switch with the black junction block. The other
terminal on the toggle switch will go to remaining unused small solenoid
terminal. When the toggle switch is closed the solenoid will click.

16.If Installing a Hydraulic Alternator you can either supply oil to it from a
vacuum motor or from its own remote on the tractor. If connecting to a
vacuum motor, plumb the return from the vacuum motor into the top
elbow on the inlet side of the hydraulic motor for the alternator. Connect a
return line from the bypass valve to the return on the tractor or return to
sump. Fit a hydraulic line to the elbow on the return side of the hydraulic
motor to the return on the tractor the vacuum motor would have be
plumbed to. (See Figure 14). Start the remote for the vac motor with the
bypass valve fully open (9 o’clock position). Once the motor for the
alternator slowly starts to turn start to close the bypass valve until the
voltage gauge reads 12 volts.

Final Checks
Motor Test Lead
The motor test lead has two purposes. First and foremost, use it to check the
engagement of the driver on the output shaft of the electric drive with the seed
plate shaft. The other purpose is mainly for finger pickup planters.
To accomplish this test you will need a 12v power supply connected to the ring
terminals on one end of the motor test lead. After installing one of our electric
drives onto a row unit, place the seed hopper back onto the row unit. Then attach
the two pin deutsche connector to the motor. The motor will spin 80 rpm, so
make sure it is safe to apply power to the motor. While the motor is spinning
check to see the seed plate doesn’t skip. If the plate skips, adjust the alignment of
the motor with the seed plate shaft.
Once correct motor alignment is confirmed, if using finger pickups you need to
check the amperage draw of the finger pickup. Our motors are rated for 7.5Amps.
Off the shelf finger pickups are typically set tight and can draw 10Amps. You will
need an amp-meter to check the draw on the motor. Remove the fuse cap on the

motor test lead and remove the fuse. Next insert the amp-meter leads into the
fuse terminals on the motor test lead. Connect the test lead to the motor and
your power supply and check the amperage draw. Ideally, the draw should be
around 4.5 amps. Adjust the tension on the finger plate to meet this amperage
draw. As a side note, when inserting the amp-meter leads into the fuse terminals,
place the leads on the opposite side of the terminal that the fuse slides into.
Otherwise the lead can open up the fuse slot to a point the fuse will not hold
when in place.
