PREFACE
The Self Study Report is a document that presents the self analysis
prepared with sincere efforts and honesty to the best of our knowledge and
belief. The college is looking forward to the second cycle of accreditation by
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). This report is prepared
according to the instructions laid down by NAAC which include three parts:
Part-I comprises of (a) Undertaking, (b) Executive Summary and SWOC Report.
Part II contains (a) Profile of the college (b) Criterion wise Inputs. Part-III
consists of Enclosures and a declaration by the head of the institution. The
NAAC has developed certain measures for continuous improvement of the
quality of higher education. In the present report we have tried to meet the
parameters as laid down by NAAC as the college is committed to the core values
of NAAC.
The College has only Bachelor of Arts course for girls. There is endless
effort towards enhancement in the quality of teaching and the achievements of
the students. There are efforts to bring in more courses that are relevant to the
contemporary scenario. We take pleasure in submitting the Self Study Report
(SSR) for assessment and accreditation to apprise NAAC of the continuous
efforts and results of our march ahead. It was impossible to complete this SelfStudy Report without the whole-hearted support and co-operation of entire
College. We are keen to meet the Peer Team of NAAC during their forthcoming
visit to our institute.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND SWOC ANALYSIS
Criterion I: Curricular Aspects
The College was established in the year 1975 as an extension of Gauri Pathshala Inter College
(established in 1904) in the thick locality of Malviya Nagar (Ahiyapur), the birthplace of
Bharat Ratna Rajarshi Purshottam Das Tandon, Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya and Pt. Bal
Krishna Bhatt with the aim to educate and empower the girls of this area who were unable to
continue higher education. The college was established by Smt Rani Tandon, the daughter in
law of Rajarshi Purshottam Das Tandon and presently it is blessed to have Dr Shashi Tandon
,Rajarshiji’s grand daughter in law as the Chairperson of the Governing Body of the college
.Vision and Mission of the college is to provide higher education of excellent quality and to
empower them so that they may become self dependent responsible citizen of the nation. The
College began with BA course with subjects Hindi, Sanskrit, English, Education, Music
(Instrumental) Music Vocal, Political Science, Economics, Ancient History and was affiliated
to the University of Allahabad .It attained Central status and became a Constituent College of
the University of Allahabad in year 2005 . NAAC Team visited the college in the year 2004
for the first cycle and thereafter got the ‘B’ grade. The effective implementation of the
curriculum is done methodically according to the teaching plan through use of traditional and
modern methodology. To keep the curriculum up to date and relevant to the needs of society,
the university revises it. The teachers are members of the university bodies who also
communicate the feedback of the students of the college. The college also invites experts to
enhance the knowledge of the students through the Lecture Series Lectures by senior faculty
of the affiliating university on specific topics generally interdisciplinary in nature are
conducted. Facilities for providing computer skills exist in the college. There is a feed-back
mechanism.
6
Criterion II: Teaching-Learning and Evaluation:
An Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) was established in accordance with the
guidelines provided by the NAAC soon after the accreditation in July 2005.Since then the
Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) is being sent .The IQAC plans out and ensures
quality enhancement. I Q A C plays a vital role in fostering and stimulating academic
environment together with including a value system in students and instilling a Guest for
excellence. This self evaluating system ensures accountability and progressive attitude. The
Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) meets periodically to discuss the various issues
regarding teaching-learning and evaluation. The process of admitting students is transparent
and is conducted by the University,(UGAT). Due to decreasing trend in student strength
admission is done both from the College as well as the University Admission Counter. The
admission policy of the University too is responsible to a large extent .The University at the
onset of the new system of admission began with admitting all the students of all colleges
from the University counter. Almost all the seats were then filled .But thereafter they changed
the system whereby the UGAT continued but all colleges had to admit their own students. In
the year 2009, 54% seats of OBC were increased thereby increasing seats in all Colleges.
Consequently all the colleges including the Allahabad University faces crisis in admitting
students in BA Course. Our college is worst affected. Other reasons that have come to the
forefront for the decreasing
strength are that the name of the college is confused with Uttar
Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University, Allahabad commonly referred to as Rajarshi
Tandon. Besides this the college is situated in a thickly populated area where it is difficult to
commute. It is also not well connected with public transport. For girl candidates seeking
admission there are a total of ten colleges besides the University. Of these colleges five are
only Girls Colleges. So they get ample opportunity of admission. This over the years has
resulted in reduction on the number of students admitted. Various and consistent efforts are
made by the teaching faculty to improve the intake of students. The Principal requests the Vice
Chancellor to condone this and ease the policy for the college but to no avail. Scholarship by
the State Government is given to economically weak students. For a well-rounded
development of students, the college offers a proper blend of academics and Co-curricular
activities The academic progress of a student is carefully and continuously monitored. Great
emphasis is laid on continuous internal evaluation through written work and interaction in
class and through Home Examination. The college prepares annual academic calendar. The
7
teaching-learning method is student-centred. Educational Tour is conducted whereby the
students visit Historical places.
Criterion III: Research, Consultancy and Extension:
One Minor Research Project has been completed through grant received from UGC. All
members of the faculty attend and present Research papers in National and International
seminars and conferences .A faculty member has been invited to attend a conference at
Oxford, UK and Athens, Greece The college promotes the teachers to conduct Seminars
,Symposiums and workshops .In the last four years one National Seminar has been conducted .
The faculty members publish books research papers in Journals and Seminar proceedings as
well as chapters in books. The Academic audit of the teachers is done annually. The
enrichment of Library
is done on priority .It has introduced INFLIBNET facility in this
session. The Committee hall and the Activity Hall are equipped with multimedia projectors
and other facilities for conducting events.
Criterion IV: Infrastructure and Learning Resources:
The College regularly ensures quality in all academic, administrative, curricular and cocurricular activities. The Committee Hall and the Activity Hall are equipped with multimedia
projectors and other facilities for conducting events. The college has a Language Lab and
Computer Lab., for excellence in teaching and learning there is a rich Library, Computers with
internet facility for effectively translating the curriculum. The library has the facility to access
e- resource. This helps the teachers to update their knowledge.
Criterion V: Student Support and Progression:
The college has a website which provides necessary details to the students. In keeping with the
vision of the college, Symposium, Workshops and Lectures on social issues like Gender
Sensitization, Women Empowerment, Environmental Education, Social Responsibility,
Energy Conservation, Careers in Globalized World, Importance of Information Technology
and Value Education. The institution organizes various programmes to integrate cross cutting
issues like Gender Issues, Environment, Health etc. into the activities to increase the
8
awareness that help in the Holistic Development of the students. Special efforts are made to
instill moral and ethical values in the students. NSS activities make the students aware of their
social responsibility. All the students are assessed through class work, interaction in class and
the Home Examination. Great emphasis is laid on improving the performance of slow learners.
There is a systematic feedback from students and parents that is analysed and these are
considered during planning. There is a Student Council in the College. The selection is done
strictly on the basis of Lyngdoh Committee Report. The college has a Language Lab and
Computer
Lab. There are plans to start Computer Application Course
through B. Voc.
Programme . The college has applied for it .There are some objections made by the UGC
.After these objections are removed , the proposal shall be resent for consideration. At present
the software is upgraded from time to time . The Library has been connected with N-LIST for
e-resource .In future there is plan of connecting with National Knowledge Network. As a
result of all these efforts the students show marked improvement not only in their annual result
but their personality develops and their career orientation too is developed. Navotkarsh,
University level Intercollegiate Competitions are organised in which all the undergraduate
colleges participate. Eminent personalities from University and Society are invited as judges.
Winning Teams get Shields and certificates. Team Rajarshi Tandon bagged the Trophy at
National Integration Camps at Gwalior in 2009 and at Pune in 2011 representing the
University of Allahabad, facing a tough competition from
Universities from across the
country. Students are also selected for Pre Republic Day Parade and also for Republic Day
Parade.
Criterion VI: Governance and Leadership:
The Governing Body of the college exercises its control over policy making in co-ordination
with the Principal. All the decisions/ work done is in consultation with the Chairperson of the
Governing Body. All the work is planned under the guidance of the Principal .The different
committees and cells work in co-ordination. For proper functioning of the academic and co
curricular activities, various committees are formed that ensure planning and organizing of all
activities. The AQAR presents a self appraisal of the college along with the media reports,
comments of the guest, the students feedback and the reports of the various committees and
cells. The IQAC present a report of
the annual output and the shortcoming along with
proposals for improvement and plans for the coming session. For proper functioning of the
9
academic and co curricular activities, various committees are formed that ensure planning and
organizing of all activities. It also collaborates with the stakeholders, eminent people of the
society for assurance and sustenance of quality in higher education. The University organizes
meets Workshops, Programmes, Lectures through its Academic Staff College, various
Departments and the Women’s Cell that are attended by the faculty members and helps them
to update their knowledge. The College has a unit of Allahabad University Constituent
College Teachers Association (AUCCTA).The President and the Secretary of the college unit
are members of the executive council of AUCCTA.
Criterion VII: Innovative Practices:

Students and Development of Career Orientation in Girl Students.

2. Other reasons that have come to the forefront are that the name of the college is
confused with Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University, Allahabad commonly
referred to as Rajarshi Tandon. The college is situated in a thickly populated area
where it is difficult to commute. It is also not well connected with public transport. For
girl candidates seeking admission there are a total of ten colleges besides the
University. Of these colleges five are only Girls Colleges. So they get ample
opportunity of admission for girls

Demand Ratio
Reasons for decreasing Strength
1. Confusion of Name : The name of the college is confused with Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi
Tandon Open University, Allahabad commonly referred to as Rajarshi Tandon.
2. With 54% rise of OBC seats in all the colleges fewer number of candidates came to seek
admission in the college : In the year 2009, 54% seats of OBC were increased thereby
increasing seats in all Colleges. Consequently all the colleges including the Allahabad
University faces crisis in admitting students in BA Course. Our college is worst affected.
3. The college is situated in a thickly populated area where it is difficult to commute.
4. Not well connected with pubic transport.
5. For girl candidates seeking admission there are a total of ten colleges besides the
University. Of these colleges five are only Girls Colleges. So they get ample opportunity
of admission.
6. The University at the onset of the new system of admission began with admitting all the
students of all colleges from the University counter. Almost all the seats were then filled
.But thereafter they changed the system
whereby the UGAT continued but all colleges
had to admit their own students.
Action taken for improvement in admission trend.
1. Contact of Intermediate College of Allahabad for awareness. The teachers visited 80
colleges in the session 2011-12 and 2012-13 to create awareness about the college.
2. Distribution of a Brochures and Handbills in the city.
3. Publication about college activities repeatedly in different News papers.

BEST PRACTICE -1
Title VALUE EDUCATION
Goal : Imparting value education to empower the girls with moral values so
that they may become responsible citizens of India. The world today is
moving towards consumerism and globalistion thus affecting the values of the
youth in a negative way. The changing scenario is dangerous for human life
as it is impeding growth of those moral and ethical values that are essential
119
for peace and prosperity. Society is generating youth that is thinking about
accumulating wealth and moving away from human values. The goal of this
practice is to enrich students with values so that once they become a part of
the society they are able to make the world a better place. One girl can make a
great impact on the society as she will become the pivot on which her family
will revolve.
CONTEXT
The ancient cultural values of India are vanishing due to the impact of
Western culture that has crept in with the onset of globalization .The youth is
blindly following the Western culture without giving thought to the rich
cultural values of our country that have held this country together inspite of
onslaughts of foreign powers since time immemorial. Today country is
realing under corruption, injustice ,violence immorality, terrorism. Peace has
bid farewell to our country anarchy reigns supreme. To counter this situation
we have pledged to under take the task of continuously educating and
counseling the students to imbibe the positive values and make them a part of
their lives. Every one has to work, every one has to earn money but if all
these things are morally both peace and prosperity shall follow.
Teachers are not only responsible for imparting knowledge of books
but have a great responsibility of giving directions to the mind of youth. The
students who are admitted to the college are mainly from middle class and
lower class of society. These students have rarely stepped out of the homes.
They are not aware of what is going on in the society. These minds have great
chance of being mislead. They are highly impressionable. They are prepared
to bear the stress of outside world and to be strong enough not to bow before
the challenges in life and to move ahead facing all the storms on the right
path.
PRACTICE
Value education is imparted through1. Celebration of National festivals like 15th August.2nd October,26th
January where honourable guests are invited to acquaint the students
120
with the life and works of great personalities.
2. Birth Anniversaries of great persons namely Vivekananda (Youth
Week) and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad-Education Day are celebrated
.This gives the message of selfless service and devotion with which
they served their country. It inspired them towards hard work and
selfless service.
3. Assemblies for teachers and students with the principal not only
makes them aware of the socio-cultural challenges but also makes
them realize their duties towards the nation.
4. Communal Harmony Fortnight (20th August to 3rd September) and
19th to 25th November Quami Ekta Week is celebrated in which
students pledge to maintain communal harmony and various
competitions like slogans, poster, collage, speech, folksong, folk
dance, essay, poetry reading antakshri of patriotic songs are organized.
The participation in these has great impact on the students.
5. The students are acquainted with problems of society through NSS
project all round the year.
6. Cultural activities also focus on values. The culture of India ic rich
and participation in cultural activities ensures value education.
7. The literary activities like essay, debate, poetry writing give the
students a chance of presentation of their ideas and also to hear the
ideas of others. This also gives lessons in morality and value.
8. The lectures of experts on different issues also impart value education.
9. Games also help in developing values like discipline, co-operation,
and tolerance patience.
EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS
There is marked change in the personality of girls in the span of three years.
They become more confident and learn how to carry out work in a methodical
121
way. There is a positive change them
Best Practice 2
Career Orientation in Girl Students
The goal of this Best Practice in our college is to change the mindset of girls
who join the college. It has been noticed that the students who take admission
in our college are from middle class and lower class of the society. The aim of
the students is to secure a bachelors degree with rarely a desire to adopt a
career. Keeping this in mind, the college decided to work together to change
the orientation of girls and promote self dependence.
CONTEXT
Women form 50% of the world's population but in our country, the
percentage employment is much below the desired 50%.This largely is the
cause of the deplorable condition of women. Since the girls admitted in our
college are from lower middle class and lower class of society, their family
background focuses on making them experts in domestic household work but
do not make them career conscious. To counsel and guide the students to be
ambitious for a career is the goal. Economic independence gives them
security and brings an end to their exploitation to some extent. Thus they gain
confidence to face the challenge of everyday life and in difficult times they
.They also add to the workforce of the country.
Practice

The Career Counselling Committee organises a computer training
programme in which all those students who have insufficient
knowledge of computer undertake training. The programme is for two
months, October to December. A trained teacher of computer gives
training. The students not only gain knowledge but are encouraged to
study it further.

The Career Counselling Committee has a small library, of magazines
and books relevant for competitions. The students are encouraged to
122

The members of the Career Counselling Committee organise quiz of
G.K., Hindi, English and also guide them how to study for the
competitive examinations.

Lectures of counselors /experts are organised to promote the students
towards taking up a suitable career.

NGO Glory also conducts tests in English, General Knowledge and
/mental Ability and rewards the winners.

The language lab has twenty one computers and this helps the students
to improve and learn English language.
Evidence of success
The Women's Cell of the college runs a project of the institutional level. In
this project ,the students are made to fill up a questionnaire at the time of
admission. Through these questions ,the orientation of the student towards
career is judged. The same questionnaire is filled by the student when she
collects her result of final year. The analysis of this makes it clear that the
orientation of students towards career in their three years of stay has a marked
difference. They are sure that they have to work or pursue higher studies after
leaving college. They have sufficient knowledge about competitive
examinations that are conducted and awareness about what they have to study
for it. The students take admission through competition either in post
graduation or B.Ed. Some also prepare for other competitions like SSC,Banks
, Railway Boards, etc.
