1. Preface
Purpose
The purpose of this manual is to ensure that continuing care centre management and project
leaders understand the Take Care to Give Care program, and to provide them with the
information required to implement it. This document will:
Provide a step-by-step guide for program implementation including resources available,
and how to set up for all four safety campaigns
Train and educate program providers
Detail roles and responsibilities
How to Use This Guide
Please read through the entire manual. Prior to the start of each campaign, CCSA will
schedule a briefing session with you. At this session and throughout the course of the
program, CCSA is available to answer your questions and provide you support.
Who Should Use This Guide
Executives, managers and project leaders of seniors’ supportive living (SSL) and long term
care (LTC) facilities in Alberta who are CCSA members. These executives, managers and
project leaders are responsible for implementing Take Care to Give Care at their respective
facilities.
2. Program Overview
Background: Market Test
From March 25, 2013 to June 2, 2013, the Continuing Care Safety Association (CCSA)
successfully market tested a safety awareness campaign at 15 long term care (LTC) and
seniors’ supportive living (SSL) facilities in Alberta.
The objective was two-fold:
To increase awareness among facilities’ frontline employees of the:
o Health and safety risks within their work environment and jobs
o Possibility of them getting hurt
To communicate to staff that they were in a position to diminish those risks
Each facility was provided with a set of creative messaging and materials, and then briefed
on how to implement the campaign. Campaign message was centered on ‘Your Safety

Matters’ supported by the Take Care to Give Care program message. At the end of the test,
the participating facilities were surveyed for feedback. Two surveys were deployed: the first
targeted employees; and the second, project leads or managers who oversaw the pilot
implementation at their respective locations. Both surveys sought to measure exposure and
resonance of the campaign across the target audience, and identify any logistical issues
around implementation.
Analysis of survey results demonstrated potential for influencing behavioral change around
employee health and safety, based on visibility, noting, likability and clarity of the pilot
campaign message.
With the success of and knowledge gathered from this market test, CCSA is now promoting
the Take Care to Give Care health and safety awareness program to all its member facilities.
Goals and Objectives
The objectives for the current Take Care to Give Care program remain the same as the pilot:
To increase awareness among facilities’ frontline employees of the:
o Health and safety risks within their work environment and jobs
o Possibility of them getting hurt
To communicate to staff that they are in a position to diminish those risks
Benefits
By fostering a safe and healthy workplace, employers can benefit from:
Healthy and productive employees
Reduced absenteeism
More effective service delivery
Enhanced morale and motivation
Minimized risks of legal liability
Better employee retention rates
Improved profitability
Reduced WCB costs

3. Procedures
Program Details
There are 4 Safety Awareness Campaigns in all, each lasting 12 weeks except for the
Seasonal campaign that lasts for 5 weeks:
Launch of Take Care to Give Care campaign
Caregiving or Supportive Services Safety focus campaign
General Safety focus campaign
Seasonal Safety campaign
Launch Campaign
Every facility will start with the Launch campaign regardless of when you join the program.
The Launch sets the stage for the subsequent campaigns; it communicates the importance of
staying safe while at work from multiple people in the care or service provider’s life – staff,
residents and family members.
During the market test, residents and family members proved to be equally important in
promoting the safety message. They provide support and reinforcement of the health and
safety awareness message outside the workplace.
Following the Launch, if you sign up for additional campaigns, you will be enrolled in the
campaign that is about to start next.
Caregiving and Supportive Services Campaigns
The Caregiving and Supportive Services campaigns will be launched at the same time. Long
term care facilities can enroll in either Caregiving or Supportive Services or both, while
seniors’ supportive living facilities will want to opt for the Supportive Services campaign.
General Safety Campaign
The General Safety campaign is focused on safety in the workplace, and this campaign, like
the Launch, is open to all.
Seasonal Campaign
Finally, our Seasonal Campaign lasts 5 weeks and is intended for you to share the message
of safety with friends and family during the holiday season.

collectively.
In turn, this may impact staff job satisfaction and tenure, and result in the other benefits
identified in Section 2 of this manual.

Caregiving
There are three Caregiving poster variants. The copy follows after these images. Each poster
variant is available in large and small sizes.
Caregiving 1: “Doing heavy lifting on my own wears me down. Help from my co-workers
lightens that load, keeping all of us healthier and safer. Together we take care to give care.”
Caregiving 2: “Making sure that I have the right equipment before I start a job means I keep
myself and my residents safe. At the end of the day, I want to go home to my family feeling
healthy and good about what I did at work.”
Caregiving 3: “It is very important to me that I take care of my back. That way I can take care
of my residents when I’m at work and my family when I’m at home. That’s what taking care to
give care means to me.”

Supportive Services
There are three Supportive Services poster variants. The copy follows after these images.
Each poster variant is available in large and small sizes.
Support Services, Food: “Our residents always look forward to mealtimes. Some days it’s
hard to move the food carts down the hallways by myself though, so getting a co-worker to
help lighten the load can really make a difference. That’s one way that I take care to give
care.”
Support Services, Housekeeping: “I make a lot of beds during the day. I used to do it by
reaching over the bed. A co-worker pointed out that may be this was why my back hurt. Now I
walk around the bed to change sheets and I'm not sore at the end of the day. My tip? Easier
isn’t always better.”
Support Services, Laundry: “Laundry bags can be so heavy. Taking time to lift safely keeps
me healthy at work. This is one way that I take care of myself to give care to my residents.”
General Safety
There are three General Safety poster variants. The copy follows after these images. Each
poster variant is available in large and small sizes.

Safety 1, Repetition: “I take short breaks when I’m doing a lot of lifting at work. It helps me to
rest my muscles and keep me safe. Residents depend on me so I really try to take care to
give care.”
Safety 2, Too Fast: “Even when it’s busy and we are rushing to get things done quickly,
reminding myself and my co-workers to slow down is just one way I take care to give care.”
Safety 3, General: “Our residents are our main concern. We all know that to give them the
best care we need to watch out for one another and stay safe. We all need to take care to
give care.”
Seasonal
Material for the Seasonal campaign will be made available to you prior to the enrolment
period.
