Golden Gopher Family, Friends and Fans:
Over the past two years as Director of Athletics, I’ve met and had the
privilege of knowing hundreds of incredible Gopher student-athletes.
Seemingly every day I find myself marveling at how these young men
and women accomplish so much, both in the classroom and in
competition. Their leadership, perseverance and commitment to
greatness inspires me.
Each Golden Gopher student-athlete has his or her own aspirations
and dreams. Whether it’s Jon Christenson, an offensive lineman who
already has a degree in Biochemistry and is now pursuing his Master’s
in Public Health Administration and Policy, or Jessica Plant, a
swimmer with a perfect GPA studying ancient civilizations and a finalist
for the Canadian Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University, I
see how incredibly hard these young men and women work to
become tomorrow’s leaders.
The other thing I see every day is the difference made by our
donors in the lives of these amazing student-athletes. The impact of
your contributions to the Golden Gopher Fund make it possible for
every one of our 750 Gopher student-athletes – Jon, Jessica and
each of their peers – to makes their dreams a reality.
The costs of supporting a complete collegiate experience for our
student-athletes continues to rise. From tuition and books, to living
space and nutritious meals, to life-skills development and leadership
coaching, shaping an education that fully equips student-athletes to
succeed after graduation and make a difference in our communities
requires tremendous investment – approximately 29 percent of our
entire annual budget.
Meeting these rising costs on an annual basis presents an incredible challenge for our Athletics Department. Without your donations to
the Golden Gopher Fund, none of this would be possible. Your continued involvement with the Golden Gopher Fund ensures our studentathletes have everything they need to be great in whatever they do.
I sincerely appreciate everything you do to support Gopher Athletics
and all of our student-athletes. Thank you for your continued support
and go Gophers!
Norwood Teague
Director of Athletics
Welcome to the Golden Gopher Fund
The Golden Gopher Fund aspires to support the University of Minnesota
Athletics Department in forging tomorrow’s leaders through world-class
academics opportunities, extensive student-athlete development and
nationally recognized athletic experiences. The Golden Gopher Fund is
responsible for generating philanthropic gifts to assist the Athletics
Department in covering all costs associated with the student-athlete
experience in the classroom, in competition and in life.
There are 750 current Gopher student-athletes representing 25 teams.
Minnesota offers each of these young men and women an incredible
collegiate experience thanks, in large part, to the generous donations
made by Gopher fans, friends and alumni around the globe. Gifts of every
size to the Golden Gopher Fund are investments in the future of each
student-athlete who wears the Maroon and Gold, and the long-term
health and success of Golden Gopher Athletics.

Gopher Student-Athletes Need Your Support
Funded entirely by the Athletics Department without use of the
University’s general funds or taxpayer dollars, we provide the
maximum number of scholarships across our 25 teams. The
basic costs of supporting student-athletes – tuition, fees, books,
room and board – amount to nearly $10 million annually. Funding
the entire student-athlete experience goes far beyond those expenses, including needs like strength training and conditioning,

The Athletics Department maintains a collection of
healthy revenue streams to pay our annual expenses.
The support of donors is perhaps our most invaluable
source of revenue. Donations provide 15% of our
annual income.
2013-14 B1G Expenses
In the 2013-14 academic year, Gopher Athletics was sixth in the Big Ten in total expenses. Our expenses, totaling
approximately $96 million, are almost exactly the average across the conference’s 14 athletics departments. Donations to
the Golden Gopher Fund enable our department to balance these expenses in our annual budget and remain competitive
with our Big Ten peers.

Annual Stewardship Opportunities
Golden Gopher Fund annual stewardship opportunities allow us to show gratitude to our members and provide unique experiences
with Gopher student-athletes, coaches and staff.
Availability of stewardship opportunities is based on previous fiscal year gifts (July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014). However, if during the
current fiscal year (July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015), a donor exceeds their previous year’s giving total, resulting in a higher stewardship
level, they will immediately advance to that higher level and maintain that level for the next fiscal year.
In the stewardship chart below, the Block M denotes what opportunities are available to donors at each specific giving level.

Refer A Gopher
Strong recruiting builds the foundation for success in college
athletics. The same applies to growing membership and building
the foundation the Golden Gopher Fund requires to succeed.
New this year, the Refer a Gopher program encourages current
Golden Gopher Fund members to recruit family, friends and fellow Gopher fans to join.
The Golden Gopher Fund needs to keep growing to continue
providing our student-athletes with the resources they need to
achieve greatness.
Every qualified referral provided by a current member doubles as
an entry into a drawing for prizes including tickets, memorabilia
and apparel. The person who refers the most new members will
be awarded the grand prize – two 2015 football season tickets,
a season parking pass, two pre-game sideline passes and a
football autographed by Coach Kill.
After breaking records last year by reaching more than 10,000
members, we have set a new goal to reach 12,000 members by
the end of this year. But we can’t do it without you.
For more details about how you can refer a Gopher, please visit

Capital & Leadership Gifts
We aspire to provide Gopher student-athletes with the facilities
and resources needed to excel in the Big Ten and win championships. To make that goal a reality, we must rely on your
financial support to build and maintain the facilities our studentathletes need to achieve greatness and to provide our coaches
with resources to compete at an elite level.
Nothing Short of Greatness
We have a vision to transform Gopher Athletics into a culture
that stops at nothing short of greatness in the classroom, in

competition and in life. That greatness starts with strengthening
student-athletes’ academic abilities, athletic talents and life
skills to their fullest potential.
To realize this vision, we need your support for a new athletics
complex focused on top academic, athletic and leadership performance centers. Similar investments have been the catalyst at
other Big Ten schools to build championship programs.
The University of Minnesota deserves that same chance.
Forever Gold
Sustaining the Future
Scholarship endowment gifts to Forever Gold are significant investments in the future. A scholarship endowment provides an enduring source of funding while leaving a lasting legacy of support for Gopher Athletics. The goal of Gopher Athletics is to fully
endow all student-athlete scholarships.
Athletic scholarship endowments may be established with a minimum gift of $50,000 through a one-time gift, a multi-year pledge
(usually five years) or a future gift commitment. The University of Minnesota Foundation manages the investment and spending
policy of the endowment to protect its purchasing power. Donors can make additional gifts to add value to any scholarship endowment, increasing the impact of that scholarship in future years.

Planned Giving
Help Shape the Future
A gift in your estate plan is a perfect option to make a lasting impact on future generations of Gopher student-athletes. This charitable
gift arrangement allows you to make a gift now or after your lifetime.
Remember the University of Minnesota in Your Will
Making a charitable bequest to Gopher Athletics – in the form of property, a dollar amount or a percentage of the residue of your estate
– allows you to keep your assets during your lifetime while leaving a legacy that supports Gopher Athletics.
A Gift For You and the University
Several gift plans enables you to make a substantial gift to Gopher Athletics while securing lifetime income for yourself. These gifts are
invested and you or your beneficiary receive annual payments. At the end of the specified time for payments, the remaining principal
goes to benefit Gopher Athletics.
Include Gopher Athletics in Your Retirement Plan
You can donate a percentage of your retirement account or a specified dollar amount by naming Gopher Athletics as a beneficiary on
your qualified retirement plan account or IRA. If left in your estate, retirement assets are subject to income and possible estate taxes,
making them less attractive to pass on to heirs but excellent for a charitable estate gift.
Recognition
To thank donors for their partnership, the University has established the Presidents Club. Donors making bequests and other future
gifts are recognized as members of the Presidents Club and also members of the Heritage Society.
There are far more planned giving options than listed here. For more information or to schedule personal, one-on-one discussion about
planned giving opportunities, contact the Golden Gopher Fund office at (612) 626-4653.

student-athletes to succeed in the classroom, in competition and
later in life. Your scholarship seating donations transform an athletic scholarship. Your support creates a complete collegiate experience at the University of Minnesota that builds more
successful student-athletes. The vital funds generated through
