Year 12 Graduation is a special time of year. It's a time when our whole school community: parents, teachers and students, come together to celebrate the completion of 13 years of schooling. This group of young men and women must be congratulated, for their efforts, their tenacity, their camaraderie, and for being great role models to our younger students. Our graduation dinner was held last Tuesday evening at Doltone House and over 400 people, our students, their families and teachers came together to celebrate this significant milestone. There was lots of reminiscing about their school years and sharing of hopes and dreams for the future. Mr Fisher and Ms Peard also shared their memories of the last 6 years with us, making the evening very special. The official graduation assembly was held on Wednesday. This is a formal occasion where we acknowledge all of our students for their achievements, one final time. Mr Carveth spoke to students about resilience and learning from mistakes and successes in their lives. As a school, we are very proud to know that we have helped our students develop into intelligent, insightful and confident young men and women who are well equipped to thrive as adults. I must congratulate our school Captains Amelia and Peter who have displayed great strength and integrity in the way they carried out their duties this year. They have not waited to be asked to do things, but rather taken the initiative to ensure that Woolooware High School has been well represented and visible at community events from the ANZAC Day March to The School of St Jude's dinner. They have been wonderful ambassadors of our school. Thank you too, to our Vice Captains Corinne and Tyler and our SRC Presidents Jemma and Harrison for their hard work and commitment in leading our student body so effectively. These student leaders have made their mark at our school. I would like to thank Mr Fisher (year 12 Deputy Principal), Ms Peard and Mr Carveth (Year Advisors) who worked closely with this group of students and their families from the day they started school with us in 2009. Through their commitment and hard work they came to know the students and have supported them to successfully complete their schooling. At Woolooware High we pride ourselves in instilling in our students a love of learning and the strength to work hard for what they want to achieve. Most importantly we want them to leave this school with a passion for life and the skills and courage to follow their dreams. On behalf of the whole school community, I wish year 12 students success in their HSC, good health and happy productive lives. Remember, ‘be the active hero in your own lives.’ MS SIOKOS PRINCIPAL 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p. NEWS BIG SCIENCE BIG FUN On Tuesday, 26th of August a program called ‘Big Science Big Fun’ visited Woolooware High. All of year 8 was present as the laws of the universe were explained in simple, interesting ways. The experiments were interactive and hands on, making it a fun way to miss class. One of the best experiments involved a long, metal pole with a controlled fire burning on top. The fire imitated sound waves, produced from a laptop and students phones. The fire danced and flickered to bass beats, showing us the variations of different music. Another great experiment had a plastic bin with a small hole cut at the base and the top wrapped around with an elastic cover. When the bin was filled with smoke and the elastic side was hit, a spiraling ring of smoke would fire out of the other side, much like a canon but without the gunpowder or fire. We were told this was the act of high and low pressure. We also learnt about objects taking on loads of weights. For example our presenter, Holly, sat on a bed of nails without feeling a thing. Because the nails were exactly the same height and evenly spaced out the load was shared between every nail. Another example included six light bulbs holding up our presenter and another student. It turned out the plastic around the light bulbs was more likely to give way than the actual glass itself. By far though, the best experiment involved a personal appearance from Mr. Hill as he skillfully held a blowtorch at arms length while a cloud of flour wafted into the air. Flour would not normally set alight, but because of the surrounding oxygen particles the flour was burned in mid air, creating the illusion of the air catching on fire. I think I speak for my whole grade when I say we experienced an entertaining 50 minutes and a great change from all the writing we would have done in a science lesson instead. JACOB YEAR 8 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p.2 NEWS CREATIVE ARTS HSC EVENTS The past few weeks have been huge in Creative Arts as year 12 wrap up their final performances and projects. We have held a series of evenings for families and friends. HSC Music students began the series of evening performances, closely followed by the HSC Drama group. Last week HSC Visual Arts and Photography students exhibited their bodies of work. I would like to congratulate all Creative Arts students on their wonderful achievements. You have done yourselves proud. I loved the way you supported each other through this journey and on exhibition nights. Finally I would like to thank the dedicated Creative Arts teachers who have given so much of their time in order that these students may achieve the best result they possibly can. You have gone above and beyond and I am sure the students appreciate all that you have done for them. MRS COX HEAD TEACHER CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p.3 NEWS CREAVTIVE ARTS HSC EVENTS CONTINUED 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p.4 NEWS INDUSTRIAL ARTS HSC MAJOR PROJECTS During week seven of this term a team of Board of Studies HSC markers came to the school to mark the Industrial Technology Major Projects. At Woolooware we offer two strands of Industrial Technology, Graphics and Timber & Furnishings. Students undertaking these courses are required to present a major project which is used to showcase each student’s skills. These projects are entirely managed by the students where many hours go into the designing and production. This year we had a wide range of Major Projects, from Desk Clocks, Timber Chests, entertainment units to wakeboarding parks, wave pools, skate parks, light fittings, softball dugout refits, roller coaster simulations, a variety of architectural designs and even a fantasy houseboat. The display this year continued the outstanding quality that has become a trademark of Woolooware. Congratulations to both the Graphics and Timber and Furnishings students. Well Done! 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p.5 NEWS YEAR 8 HISTORY INCURSION On Thursday, 4 September year 8 History took part in a school incursion for their studies of the Middle Ages. The ‘medieval man’ once again brought an array of artefacts for the students to handle and experience. Students dressed up in medieval clothing, wore chain mail and plate armour and experienced two types of medieval punishment – the stocks and the scold’s bridle. Students also had the opportunity to see the wide variety of battle swords, try on helmets and carry shields. The students were polite and attentive, with James (aka ‘medieval man’) commenting on how well behaved the group was. From all accounts, the students learnt a lot about this very interesting period of history. MS STEPHENS HISTORY FACULTY 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p.6 NEWS EQUESTRIAN Congratulations to all students who participated in the Interschool Equestrian Championships at Camden on Saturday, 6 September. Haylee (11) Rebecca (9) Sienna (9) Tobie (11) Jessica (11) Congratulations to Rebecca who came 1st in Year 9 Age Champion. 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p.7 NEWS WHITEHOUSE FASHION DRAWING INCURSION On Monday, 25 September, design students attended a full day work shop at school. The aim of the day was to teach students the basics of fashion drawing lead by an industry professional. Our lecturer, Crystal was educated at Whitehouse and worked in the industry with such designers as Charlie Brown. The day began learning to draw the formal figure, focusing on proportions and dimensions. Later this design was used as a template to develop designs that included changes in model position and movement. Finally students were able to show their true creativity designing outfits for celebrities. Students learnt how to embellish their drawings with textural effects and colour techniques using professional drawing markers. Every student was fully engaged in this wonderful and creative learning activity. The lecturer commented on both their skill and excellent behaviour and application. At the completion of the day, a one week scholarship (valued at over $500) was awarded to the student that showed the most skill and creativity on the day. After some very difficult deliberation, Ivy (11) was awarded the scholarship! She is very talented indeed. Two highly commended certificates were also awarded by Whitehouse to Samira (9) and Hayley (11). All students will receive a certificate of participation. All the girls were able to take home a collection of drawings and templates. This will help them in their future studies with the graphic presentation of their designs. Ivy is pictured above and her design work below. It was a truly enjoyable day! MRS K MOOYMAN HOME ECONOMICS FACULTY Samira Hayley 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p.8 NEWS WINTER GRADE SPORT GRAND FINALS Winter certainly provided difficult weather conditions for our grade sport Grand Finals! Grounds were closed for the Semi Final week which saw them cancelled. This meant that teams that did not finish either first or second on the ladder at the end of the season were not able to compete for the chance to make a grand final. Unfortunately this affected the number of Woolooware teams playing in the grand finals. However, we still had a number of teams that qualified. Grand Final day was Thursday, 29 August, and the weather again wreaked havoc with our games. We were lucky to get all Netball, Basketball and Waterpolo finals played. The Oztag and soccer games had to be rescheduled for Tuesday, 2 September, with some games actually postponed until Thursday, 4 September and Friday, 5 September! It was quite an effort to get the games played, but in the end it was absolutely worthwhile to see the Woolooware teams competing for their school in the grand finals, participating superbly considering the wet conditions, and representing our school proudly. Woolooware played in the following Grand Finals: Senior Girls Soccer - Woolooware 1 vs Woolooware 2 Senior Boys Soccer - Woolooware 2 v Cronulla Junior Girls Oztag Div 1 - Woolooware 1 vs Port Hacking Open Mixed Waterpolo - Woolooware 1 vs Port Hacking Junior Girls Netball Premier Division - Woolooware vs Endeavour Junior Girls Netball Div 1 - Woolooware 3 vs Sylvania Junior Girls Netball Div 2 - Woolooware 5 vs Sylvania Senior Boys Oztag Div 1 - Woolooware 1 vs Port Hacking Junior Boys Soccer Div 3 - Woolooware 4 vs Lucas Heights Junior Boys Basketball Div 2 - Woolooware 2 vs Endeavour We were successful in winning the Senior Girls Soccer, Junior Girls Netball Div 1, Senior Boys Oztag, Junior Boys Soccer Div 3 and Junior Boys Basketball Div 2. Great results for all of our teams! Congratulations to all of our students on these Grand Finals, and also a very big thankyou to the teachers who take our grade sport teams each week for their encouragement, expertise and efforts! Our junior teams are still active in competitions whereas our senior teams have completed the competitions for this year. We were involved in both the Premiers Cup debating competition and Sutherland Shire competition with multiple teams in both. Our year 10 team, comprising of Bianca, Rhianna, Philippa and Elise made it to the Regional Quarter Final in the Premiers Cup. Congratulations girls, this means you made the final eight schools out of 64 in the competition. MRS E SPEECHLY DEBATING COORDINATOR On Friday, September 12, as part of our National Literacy ENGLISH SOAPBOX TOURNAMENT and Numeracy Week celebrations, the English Faculty held its inaugural Soapbox Tournament, a public speaking competition for Stage 4 students. Competitors had to compose and present a four minute persuasive speech on an issue of their own choosing, followed by a two minute impromptu speech on the topic ‘Goals are good for you.’ Adjudicators Ms Siokos and Mrs Holz were impressed by the quality of the prepared speeches and the high standard of delivery by all. The impromptu speech proved to be critical in the final decision; developing strong ideas into a persuasive argument in only five minutes can be extremely daunting but all students rose to the challenge admirably. Congratulations go to our 2014 winner Matthew and runnersup Jaydan and Ashley. 8/10/2014 Woolooware High School p.12 NEWS YEAR 7 TOPPS EXCURSION Year 7 had a great time at the TOPPS outdoor recreation park on a very wet Friday 5th September. We went there to compliment our work with the school anti-harassment program "step in, step up". In groups, we participated in activities that emphasised group cooperation as well as being fun. Students were involved in the 'survivor challenge', 'mission patrol' and go cart racing. The extra puddles were just an added bonus to the course. We all had a wonderful day; the weather didn't dampen our enjoyment at all. Thank you to all the teachers who helped and to our wonderful Year 7 students, who are always a great bunch. Stand-out performances included our Gold medal winners Danielle, Rhianna and Mitchell - this of course meaning they placed 1st in the entire state! Outstanding! Stevie again impressed with her large number of events, winning a Silver medal in triple jump, along with Bronze in the long jump and relay. Mitchell not only won two Gold medals for 4x400m relay and 400m hurdles, he also won a Bronze in 110m hurdles. Danielle can also lay claim to being the fastest 12 year old girl in NSW state high schools due to her winning the 100m sprint! Our two school relay teams ran fantastically in the 4 x 100m relays, with the 15yr girls team winning a Silver medal and the 16yr girls winning the Bronze. The 15yr girls team was Phoebe, Emma, Bronte and Tayla. The 16 yr girls team was Stevie, Rhianna, Lili and Olivia. Congratulations to all of our wonderful competitors. The sessions were run by a facilitator from Digital Thumbprint aimed at empowering and informing our ‘digital native’ students. The sessions were fun and interactive in conveying facts students need to know to stay safe online. There were plenty of opportunities for students to get involved and share experiences. The facilitator was very impressed with the positive attitude and focus of all the students who took part. The year 8 sessions focussed on exploring insight into why personal information is valuable to business and other individuals, and how best to secure it while signing up to social networks and mobile apps. Part of the session looked at using www.TOSDR.org which summarises terms of service into a few dot points for people to have an idea of what they are agreeing to. The year 9 and 10 sessions focussed on the impact their behaviours can have on themselves and their friends. They also looked at how to help friends who may fall victim to anti-social activity and exploring the concept of online identities. Protecting your identity and information online was also discussed in light of the fact that often students’ accounts are hacked by people they know. www.howsecureismypassword.net is a way to test the level of security of passwords. Tips on improving the security of passwords include: - using a combination of uppercase, lowercase, symbols and numbers - not using personal information like your name, birthday or pet’s names - using a strange passphrase of random words MS STEPHENS UNIFORM SHOP The Uniform Shop will be closed for the duration of the HSC exams in term 4 - weeks 2, 3, 4 & 5. The purpose of the day was to allow year 10’s to experience and learn more about event management. As well as this, it gave year 7’s an opportunity to have an enjoyable day with their friends and teaching them some sporting skills along the way. Organising the event involved consistent communication and enthusiasm to ensure that the day ran smoothly and successfully. Coaches, referees, timekeepers, sponsorship and food committees were established to ensure that all aspects of the event were ready for the day. Some major tasks included developing a draw, booking courts and fields, getting food and prizes donated and handing out a note for all of year 7 to inform them about the day. In doing this, we were able to see the extensive organisation required which will be advantageous for our future. On the day, it was important to not only do our elected jobs chosen prior to the event but also make sure that all the participants were occupied and having fun. Each student was given a sausage sizzle, a soft drink or water, Subway cookies and an ice block for lunch (with the option of seconds). At the end of the day all teams came together to have an awards presentation. Competition champions, teams, individuals and all other participants were awarded prizes for their eager approach to the day. A survey was administrated to all year 7 students and the overwhelming majority of the students said that the coaches, refs, food, friendliness of staff and the organisation of the day were fantastic. All of year 10 PASS students agreed that organising this day was beneficial in learning more about event management. It also gave us a great opportunity to work as a large group and develop our communication skills. In the end, it was almost forgotten that the day was an assessment task because it was so much fun for all. We would like to thank all year 7 students for participating on the day, teachers for helping out and all the companies that generously donated to help us run the event as efficiently as possible.
