Preparing students for new or modified tasks in the Cambridge English: First and Cambridge
English: Advanced exams
In this workshop we will discuss how to effectively prepare students for new or modified tasks in the First
and Advanced exams from 2015. The first half of the workshop will focus on the new Reading and Use of
English papers. We will look at how research on the Cambridge Learner Corpus and the English
Vocabulary Profile informs our exam preparation materials and we will discuss a variety of classroom
activities and techniques to prepare students for different parts of the papers. The second half of the
workshop will focus on the skills required for the new Writing Part 1 essay tasks at First and Advanced
including a range of classroom activities which will help students to optimise their performance in the
exams.
Teaching BEC Vantage writing skills
We look at how the BEC Vantage Writing Paper is constructed, what it tests and how to prepare students
for it. We will look at some practical classroom activities which raise students’ awareness of what is
required for writing in business and how to approach writing tasks. We discuss how to introduce peer
correction and feedback and how to assess and motivate our students.
