The Great Mugging
As a provocation to consider individual/hand crafted versus
mass produced/disposable cup and the ensuing environmental
impact, Auckland Studio Potters will be stationed at strategic
venues (near cafés) to swap disposable coffee cups with
original, handmade ceramic mugs. Join the ‘conversation’ on
the blog site – details attached to each mug.
Clues as to where we will be stationed will be advertised in the week
leading up to Auckland Artweek, with the teaser ‘Have you
FREE
been Mugged yet?’ Fri 17 Oct, 7-10am Ponsonby Rd
Artist Talk: Nic Moon
Nic Moon discusses her practice and the Ranui Library
Project where she has collaborated with Jasmax’s Lars
von Minden to incorporate the theme of The Great
Forest into the building’s architecture. This work draws
on themes from the artist’s oeuvre – well-used shovels
incised with native plant leaf skeleton, and locally
sourced clay to paint trees on the interior wall.

In Time Like Glass – Tony Lane
Tony Lane’s single-work exhibition features his remarkable
9.6 metre long painting, In Time Like Glass. The work
depicts unexpected juxtapositions of interior objects in
an exterior space recalling the traditions of Metaphysical
Art and Surrealism, most notably the work of Giorgio de
Chirico. As writer and curator Heather Galbraith points out,
“often in Lane’s work the picture plane has been tilted, the
perspective skewed, encouraging the viewer to question
whether the site depicted is ‘real’ or imagined”.

Landscape painting’s enduring appeal
Warwick Brown, author of Seen this Century: 100 Contemporary New
Zealand Artists, presents a talk on the two exhibitions at Orexart. He
will discuss landscape painting’s enduring appeal to artists, collectors
and the public, using the works on display to discuss the importance
of painterliness and the artist’s vision.

Michael Shepherd
Open Drawing
Workshop
Michael Shepherd presents
his meticulously painted, yet
understated works that explore
and depict New Zealand’s
history, motivated by the
experiences of family members
in world wars. He continually
attempts to reconstruct these
long lost worlds, recognising
the impossibility of definitively
recording the past, as records
are based on personal and
subjective recollection.
Matthew Browne provides
three open drawing workshops for you to try your hand
at observational drawing. All
materials are supplied.

Poetry Readings
John Pule’s exhibition From the
Islands: Dreams, Fragrance &
Extinction features eighteen new
hand-written poems. The blue
inked poems are a reflection
on Pule’s extensive travel in the
Pacific. Each poem is a proverb,
mantra or haiku influenced by
events he encountered; festivals,
death, beauty, deterioration,
inebriation and memory.

Malerverksted
This experimental art film documents the process of painting.
The Malerverksted is a Norwegian initiative for the disabled.
Within contemporary art, the so called ‘Outsider Artist’ is no
longer on the periphery, overcoming constraints that its name
suggests. This film shows that the fundamental human ability
to create is intrinsically present within everyone.
